For Oregon locals planning a group getaway into the heart of the Willamette National Forest, Fernview Group Campground offers an exceptional and often-overlooked option. Tucked away amidst lush trees and perched above the South Santiam River, this unique site provides the perfect blend of privacy, natural beauty, and essential amenities for extended family gatherings, friends' reunions, or any group seeking a tranquil outdoor escape. Far from the bustling crowds of individual campsites, Fernview is designed to foster a communal yet peaceful experience, making it a favorite for those who've discovered its charm.
Fernview Group Campground stands out as a destination that perfectly balances rustic appeal with practical group functionality. It was originally an individual campground that has been thoughtfully converted into a dedicated group area, ensuring a more exclusive and controlled environment for your gathering. The feedback from those who have enjoyed its quiet ambiance and riverside access speaks volumes about its suitability for creating lasting memories in Oregon's stunning natural landscapes. This article will guide you through the distinct features and benefits of choosing Fernview for your next group adventure, highlighting why it's such a cherished spot for local Oregonians.
Fernview Group Campground is located at 4424 State Hwy 9, Foster, OR 97345, USA. More specifically, it's approximately 20-22 miles east of Sweet Home on Highway 20, at an elevation of about 1,360 to 1,400 feet. This location places it firmly within the beautiful Willamette National Forest, offering a genuine escape into the Central Oregon Cascades.
Accessibility to Fernview is generally good. The campground is situated just off Highway 20, a well-maintained state highway, making the drive relatively straightforward for most vehicles, including RVs. While one past reviewer noted a potentially confusing or difficult right turn after crossing a bridge, the primary entrance to the campground is immediately to the left after the bridge. It's advisable to look for clear signage for "Fernview Group Site." For RV users, the main parking area near the bathroom is suitable for one large or two small RVs, with a maximum of two RVs allowed within the group site itself. Individual campsites within the group area also have varying lengths, with some accommodating trailers up to 22 feet and others up to 35 feet, although it is a dry camping scenario for RVs (no hookups). This convenient yet secluded location means that while you feel immersed in nature, essential services in Sweet Home are not too far away for any last-minute needs.
Fernview Group Campground offers a focused set of services tailored for a comfortable group camping experience within a natural setting.
Dedicated Group Site: The entire campground operates as a single reservable group site, offering exclusive use for your party. It comprises 11 individual campsites, including two tent-only sites, with a total capacity of up to 75 people.
Basic Campsite Amenities: Each of the 11 sites within the group area comes equipped with a picnic table and a fire pit/grill, providing essential facilities for cooking and gathering.
Accessible Vault Toilets: The campground features one accessible single vault toilet. Reviewers consistently note these facilities are kept as clean as possible for vault toilets, which is a significant positive for rustic camping.
Drinking Water: Potable water is available on-site via a single hand pump, typically located near the entrance and picnic area, ensuring access to fresh water for your group.
RV Parking Area: A designated parking area adjacent to the bathroom can accommodate up to two RVs, making it convenient for groups traveling with larger vehicles (dry camping only).
Day Use Options: When not reserved by a group, individual sites may be available for single-night use, and a day-use area provides picnicking and river access for the public.
Fernview Group Campground offers several compelling features and highlights that make it an attractive choice for groups exploring Oregon's outdoors.
Lush, Shady, and Quiet Environment: The campground is celebrated for its dense tree cover (mature cedars and Douglas fir) that provides abundant shade, making it a "delight when the weather was too warm," as noted by a reviewer. This natural canopy also contributes to a quiet and serene atmosphere, enhancing the sense of seclusion.
Immediate Access to South Santiam River: Perched on a bench above the South Santiam River, the campground offers immediate access to the water. While river access might be difficult from certain points directly within the campground, it is easily reachable via a short walk or drive nearby, providing opportunities for swimming, wading, and fishing.
Privacy and Exclusivity: The most significant highlight for groups is the ability to reserve the entire campground. This provides unparalleled privacy, eliminating concerns about other campers and allowing groups to fully enjoy their time together without interruption, making it "pretty freaking awesome" according to one satisfied customer.
Variety of Sites within Group Area: Within the 11 available sites, there's a mix. Site number three is particularly noted for its excellent river view and generous size with two picnic tables. While some sites might be smaller or overgrown, the overall diversity allows groups to spread out and find comfortable spots.
Proximity to Trails and Lakes: Fernview is an excellent base camp for exploring the surrounding area. The Rooster Rock Trail is directly across the highway, providing hiking opportunities. Numerous other lakes and trails, including the Santiam Wagon Road (with over 20 miles for hiking, biking, and horse riding) and Iron Mountain (known for wildflowers), are within a 45-minute drive.
Suitable for RVs (Dry Camping): While a "dry camping" scenario (no hookups), the campground can accommodate RVs, with clear routes for maneuvering, making it accessible for groups with a mix of camping preferences.

fernview group campground Reviews
This turned out to be a favorite of ours, lush and shady and quiet and easy access to water. Day use folks came and went each day and were pleasant neighbors as we stayed as an extended family gathered from all over in the group site. Bathroom was as clean as a vault bathroom can be, water provided by a single spigot and pump. We had an RV with us and had no trouble maneuvering in and out, but for RV’ers this is a dry camping scenario. Recommend this location for groups looking for a pleasant place in the hot summer - tree cover and immediate access to the South Santiam made this a delight when the weather was too warm for my comfort.
Aug 08, 2020 · Jonathan AndersonWe just returned from a fantastic weekend where we used about 6 of the sites. Site number three is by far the best with a really nice river view, a large site, and two picnic tables. All of the sites can hear the river so we slept like magic. I’m only rating at four stars because 4 to 5 of the sites were either overgrown or very small that they would only fit a two or four person tent. Had we shown up with a bigger group, I think we might’ve been disappointed. We had a great experience but i’ll have to think through next time whether the value is there for only using about half of the sites. Having privacy and not having to deal with any other campers was pretty freaking awesome though and definitely worth paying more for.
Jun 27, 2022 · Jessie SteigerWe rented the entire site for a group event. My understanding is that you can only reserve if you reserve the whole site. Park patrol that came by was very friendly. We had live music for a larger get together of family and friends pre-covid and nobody hassled us! It is a good spot where you can make some noise without being a nuisance to anyone. The spot was very clean when we showed up and we were careful to leave it as clean as possible. Thank you to the service out there for making this a no-hassle, awesome camping event for us!
Sep 01, 2021 · Alexis LI think there are only two sites to camp. Both incredibly isolated. This is not camping sites nearby were all where you are camping right next to another camping family. The closes group is a quarter mile away and the road is a bumpy mile away. We had a make shift rock fire pit and plenty of space.
Aug 21, 2016 · Kyle PearseIt's great for a big group. No curfew, no noise complaints, great access to water for fishing or swimming.
