From its well-maintained sites to the soothing presence of the Nestucca River, Fan Creek Campground embodies the spirit of Oregon's accessible wilderness. It’s an ideal spot for those who cherish the "pack out what you pack in" philosophy and appreciate a clean, respectful camping community. Let's explore the details that make Fan Creek Campground a local favorite.
Fan Creek Campground is strategically located near Willamina, OR 97396, USA, within the picturesque Oregon Coast Range. More precisely, it can be found along the Nestucca River Road / Fan Creek Road, which is part of the designated Nestucca Wild and Scenic River area and the Nestucca River National Back Country Byway.
For Oregonians, reaching Fan Creek Campground involves a scenic drive through the state's diverse landscapes. From Willamina, visitors can take Willamina Creek Road, to Coast Creek Road, to Gilbert Creek Road, to Bald Mountain Access Road, and finally to Bible Creek Road to reach the Nestucca Byway. Alternatively, from Carlton, one can take Meadow Lake Road west and continue onto the Nestucca Byway. While the routes may involve winding forest roads, they offer a beautiful prelude to the natural serenity awaiting at the campground. It's advisable to check road conditions, especially during the shoulder seasons, as some access roads may be affected by weather.
The campground's position alongside the Nestucca River is a major draw, offering easy river access for various activities. Although some individual sites might have "awkward" arrangements, as noted by a reviewer, the overall layout ensures that many sites are either directly along the river or offer convenient access to it. The "very easy to get to" nature of the location, despite its seemingly remote setting, is a consistent positive point from visitors. Furthermore, its location provides a good base for exploring other nearby attractions, including a relatively short drive (approximately 40 minutes) to the Oregon Coast beaches, offering a diverse range of activities within a reasonable distance.
Fan Creek Campground, managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), provides a balanced set of services that cater to a comfortable yet authentic camping experience. While it emphasizes self-sufficiency, essential amenities are available to enhance your stay:
- Campsites: The campground features 11 well-maintained campsites, capable of accommodating both tents and RVs (though no hookups are available for RVs). Each site is equipped with a parking spur (ranging from 15 to 50 feet), a picnic table, a steel fire ring, and a grill. Mature trees provide ample shade to most sites, and several are conveniently located right along the Nestucca River.
- Vault Toilets: Clean outhouses (vault toilets) are provided and are regularly maintained, contributing to a more pleasant experience for campers.
- Potable Water: A centralized well provides potable drinking water. However, during months with reduced sunlight (outside of the general May-September season), potable water may be turned off, so it's always wise to be prepared to bring your own water for washing and drinking.
- Trash Collection: While the general rule is "pack out what you pack in," trash collection facilities are available. Nonetheless, adhering to Leave No Trace principles is highly encouraged.
- Campsite Host: The presence of a "Great Host" is frequently mentioned in reviews, indicating that the campground benefits from dedicated on-site management that helps maintain order and cleanliness.
- Reservations: Campsites can be reserved in advance through recreation.gov, or unreserved sites can be paid for upon arrival using the Recreation.gov Mobile App. It's important to download the app before arriving, as there is no cell reception in the drainage.
- Fire Rings and Grills: Steel fire rings and BBQ grills are provided at each site, allowing for campfires (subject to current fire restrictions) and outdoor cooking. Firewood collection within the campground is not permitted.
- Accessible Trail: The campground features an accessible trail leading to a fishing/viewing platform, ensuring inclusivity for all visitors.
Fan Creek Campground offers several compelling features and highlights that make it a favorite among local campers and outdoor enthusiasts:
- Beautiful Riverside Setting: Its location right along the Nestucca Wild and Scenic River is a major highlight. The river provides a soothing soundtrack, opportunities for fishing (steelhead and salmon runs are known), and the chance to simply relax by the water's edge.
- Well-Maintained Sites: Despite being a BLM campground, visitors consistently praise the upkeep, noting that "all the sites are well maintained." This commitment to cleanliness significantly enhances the camping experience.
- Knowledgeable and Friendly Host: The presence of a "Great Host" contributes significantly to the positive atmosphere, ensuring rules are followed and assistance is available.
- Proximity to Nestucca National Back Country Byway: The campground's location along this scenic byway offers opportunities for leisurely drives, exploring the Oregon Coast Range, and discovering other hidden gems in the area.
- Access to OHV Trails: For off-highway vehicle enthusiasts, the Nestucca Off-Highway Vehicle Area (including Whipup Flat, Elk Flat, and Grassy Flat) is nearby, offering dedicated trails for ATV riding (Oregon ATV permits required).
- Variety of Site Sizes and Locations: While some sites might be "long and narrow" or "awkwardly arranged," there's also a good mix of "very big" sites, including those right by the river and others nestled in the center of the campground, offering options to suit different preferences.
- Peaceful and Unplugged Experience: The lack of cell reception in the area is a key highlight for those seeking a true digital detox, allowing for a deeper connection with nature and companions without electronic distractions.
- Forest Immersion: Situated in a heavily wooded area, the campground provides ample shade and a sense of being fully immersed in the Oregon Coast Range forest environment.
- Proximity to Coastal Towns: Despite its natural setting, Fan Creek is only about a 40-minute drive to the Oregon Coast beaches, allowing campers to easily combine a forest and river experience with a day trip to the ocean.

Fan Creek Campground Reviews
The BEST campground by far. Great Host and all the sites are well maintained. I just spent 4 nights there. I’ll definitely be going back. Pack out what you pack in. Clean outhouses.
Jun 23, 2025 · Laura PetryReally beautiful campground and the river is so nice. Some of them are kind of arranged awkwardly there’s a couple on the little side offshoot street that are right along the river but they’re long and narrow and the picnic table is situated very close to the fire and there’s two or three of them like that the set up is kind of weird but it’s a great location there’s all kinds of room down by the river very easy to get to. Some of the other sites in the campground are very big and close to the river and then there’s some in the center all in all I think there’s only 12 sites. It’s also a nice location so that if you wanted to you could takeoff and take 40 minutes or so and drive to the beach.
Sep 09, 2022 · Jacqui ParkerCool little spot outside of town a way, and definitely a cool way to get to the coast. There's a little rubbish here and there, but nothing to freak about. A nice spot for a motorcyclist to ride to with an adventure. The vibes out here and quaint and cozy. Also, for some reason the bridge campsite has alot of millipedes, so just fair warning. All in all a cool campsite, not to far out of the way.-Update-Went camping here, pretty peaceful place to camp. Bring your big spray though. I don't mind insects but there is a lot of them. Mainly just carpenter ants that rip their own wings off, mosquitos and cool little millipedes, and also fire ants. Be weary about where you set up your tent as well and don't park yourself on a fire ant mound. Really cool sights to see and very tranquil. All in all, a fun quick getaway from the bustling life that is the Wilamette valley.
May 31, 2021 · Logan Kruse (Sharpie)The Host was informative and friendly. The scenery is pristine. The campers policed their own garbage. And there is no human generated light pollution, so you can see so many more stars than less remote locations. We were there for the Perseids!
Aug 20, 2016 · Scott MooreJerry, the camp Host at Fan Creek, is the best guy one will ever meet! My wife and I became great friends with him and we had other campers help celebrate his Birthday with a Strawberry Pudding infused cake with fresh Oregon strawberry's and whipped cream. We will be back to celebrate his Birthday again next year and for the next 40 more! ( That's his wish )
