For military personnel, retirees, Department of Defense (DoD) civilians, and their authorized guests in New Mexico, finding a reliable and comfortable place to stay while exploring the Land of Enchantment is a priority. FamCamp Kirtland AFB, located within the secure perimeter of Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, offers an exclusive and highly convenient camping experience tailored to this community. This isn't just a place to park your RV or pitch a tent; it's a well-regarded facility that provides a safe, clean, and accessible environment for both short-term visits and longer stays.
FamCamps, or Family Campgrounds, are a unique benefit offered by the military, designed to provide affordable and convenient lodging for those with military affiliation. Kirtland AFB's FamCamp embodies this mission, offering a structured yet relaxed atmosphere for its guests. Whether you're visiting Albuquerque for leisure, on temporary duty (TDY), or relocating, understanding the specific offerings and guidelines of FamCamp Kirtland AFB is crucial for a smooth and enjoyable stay. This article will provide a detailed overview, from its location and accessibility on base to its services and unique features, all designed to inform New Mexico's military community about this valuable local asset.
FamCamp Kirtland AFB serves as the dedicated campground for authorized personnel at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It provides a secure and managed environment for recreational vehicles (RVs) and tent campers. As a facility operated by Kirtland Force Support, it is specifically designed to cater to active duty, reserve, retired military members, as well as DoD and NAF (Non-Appropriated Fund) civilians and their guests. This eligibility requirement ensures a consistent community environment within the campground.
The FamCamp offers a mix of full hook-up sites for RVs and designated dry/tent campsites, aiming to accommodate various camping preferences. It operates on a first-come, first-served basis for most stays, though specific considerations are made for active duty personnel on official orders (TDY/PCS) or those with medical needs at the VA/AF hospital. Guests often praise the campground for its overall cleanliness, well-maintained facilities, and the helpfulness of its staff and camp hosts, who are available after hours for assistance. While some aspects like after-hours check-in procedures might initially cause slight confusion, the overall positive sentiment highlights a well-run operation that strives for guest satisfaction within the unique context of a military installation. The peaceful setting and secure environment are consistently noted as significant advantages.
FamCamp Kirtland AFB is strategically located at 9712 Golden Rod Cir, Albuquerque, NM 87116, USA, within the secure confines of Kirtland Air Force Base. Its on-base location is a significant factor for its suitability, providing a sense of security and convenient access to various base facilities.
Accessing the FamCamp requires navigating through one of Kirtland AFB's gates. For larger rigs, such as the 38-foot bumper pull mentioned in a customer review, the Truman Gate is highly recommended and often a requirement. The Truman Gate is the main gate and operates 24/7, making it convenient for arrivals at any time. While other gates might work for smaller rigs, it is always advisable for RVers to confirm the best entry point for their specific vehicle size due to potential internal obstacles or clearance issues. The Eubank Gate is another 24/7 option that is near the FamCamp (Building 24250), though some users have noted a need to watch for potential "obstacle courses" after the ID check for larger vehicles. It's crucial for all guests to have their valid military ID or authorized DoD/NAF identification for base entry.
Once inside the base, the FamCamp is generally well-signed. Its location on the base means guests have convenient access to a range of on-base amenities, including the Commissary, Base Exchange (BX), medical facilities, and various support services without needing to leave the secure perimeter. This "all the conveniences of a military base" aspect is a significant draw. While located within the base, it is still in Albuquerque, offering reasonable proximity to city attractions for authorized personnel who wish to explore beyond the base. However, for those with pets, caution is advised regarding unpaved areas adjacent to the camp, as they may harbor chiggers – tiny mites common in grassy or scrubby areas that cause itchy bites. Guests should be prepared with insect repellent or avoid such areas with their furry companions.
FamCamp Kirtland AFB provides a solid range of services designed to make stays comfortable and convenient for its eligible guests.

- Quiet Atmosphere: The campground is described as generally quiet, contributing to a restful stay, which is often a priority for campers.
- Affordable Rates: FamCamps are typically known for their competitive and affordable daily rates (e.g., $25 for full hookup RV sites, $10 for dry sites), making them a cost-effective lodging option for eligible individuals.

FamCamp Kirtland AFB Reviews
Came in the Truman Gate as my rig is bigger (38 ft bumper pull), the other gates might work for smaller rigs. Overall a great layout, however my wife was confused with the after hours check in and the lady that happened to be in the office at the time wasn't very knowledgeable of some things. The gentlemen that I met the next day driving around in the golf cart was very knowledgeable and helpful for sure! Watch the dirt lot north of the camp if you decide to take your dogs there, there are lots of "chiggers" in there that are not visible.
Jun 14, 2025 · Jason BreindelStopped here for the night. Clean and well maintained. Showers and bathrooms were good. My only disappointment is that the laundry room fan wasn’t working. It was a super hot day and doing laundry 🧺 in a sauna was very uncomfortable.
