FamCamp Introduce
For eligible members of our military community and their families residing in or visiting Maryland, FamCamp at Joint Base Andrews offers a unique and distinct camping experience. Located in Clinton, MD, this facility is specifically designed to provide affordable and accessible recreational opportunities for active-duty personnel, retirees, veterans with service-connected disabilities, and other authorized users. As a military campground, it operates with a different set of rules and amenities compared to public campgrounds, catering to the needs of its specific demographic.
FamCamp provides a convenient base for those looking to explore the greater Washington D.C. metropolitan area, while still offering a sense of community and the security of being on a military installation. It's a place where military families can connect, relax, and enjoy outdoor activities with fellow service members. While the experience may vary based on individual expectations and ongoing maintenance efforts, its primary value lies in its dedicated service to the military community and its strategic location.
FamCamp is located at 4520 Wheeling Rd, Clinton, MD 20735, USA, within the confines of Joint Base Andrews. This placement offers a degree of security and access to base facilities that are not available at civilian campgrounds. However, it also means that access is restricted to eligible individuals. To enter Joint Base Andrews and utilize FamCamp, all guests must possess valid military identification or meet specific eligibility requirements for base access. These requirements typically include:
- Active Duty Military personnel and their families
- Military Retirees and their families (20+ years of service with retiree ID card)
- Veterans with Service-Connected Disabilities (0% or more, with VA Health ID Card - VHIC)
- Medal of Honor Recipients & Former POWs
- DoD Civilians & Contractors (eligibility may vary by base; it is crucial to call ahead and confirm)
- Immediate family members of eligible personnel (may need to be accompanied by the sponsor)
It is important for prospective campers to verify their eligibility and understand the base access procedures prior to arrival. Gate access can sometimes involve security checks, so allowing extra time for entry is advisable. Once on base, FamCamp is located conveniently, often with clear signage directing campers to the Outdoor Recreation office for check-in. The proximity to major roadways in Prince George's County also means relatively easy access to local amenities in Clinton and the wider D.C. area.
FamCamp at Joint Base Andrews aims to provide essential services for a comfortable camping experience, particularly for RV users. Based on available information, services typically include:
- Full Hook-up RV Sites: Many sites are equipped with water, electric (20, 30, and 50 amp), and sewer hookups, accommodating various RV sizes, including big rigs.
- Partial Hook-up Sites: Some sites may offer water and electric only.
- No Hook-up Sites: Options for those who prefer more primitive camping or have self-contained RVs without needing hookups.
- Dump Station: A facility for RV waste disposal is typically available on-site.
- Laundry Facilities: Self-service laundry machines are usually provided for campers' convenience.
- Restrooms and Showers: Public restrooms and showers are available, though their condition can vary and has been a point of feedback in some reviews.
- Picnic Tables: Each campsite generally includes a picnic table for outdoor dining and gathering.
- Fire Rings/Grills: Individual sites often have fire rings or grills for campfires and cooking. Open campfires may be restricted to specific areas, such as the tent area, where provided fire rings must be used.
- Wi-Fi Access: While connectivity can vary, some military campgrounds offer Wi-Fi access.
- Pet-Friendly: FamCamp generally allows pets, though strict rules regarding leashing, waste disposal, and unattended pets are enforced (e.g., maximum of 3 pets per RV, leashes no more than 8 feet, pets not allowed unattended for more than 2 hours).
While some past reviews have noted areas for improvement regarding maintenance, FamCamp at Joint Base Andrews still offers several features that make it a valuable option for its eligible users:
- Strategic Location: Its primary highlight is its location near Washington D.C., offering a cost-effective alternative to civilian campgrounds for exploring national monuments, museums, and historical sites in the capital. It's approximately 4 miles from the Branch Avenue Metro station, providing convenient public transit access to D.C.
- Affordability: Compared to many civilian RV parks and campgrounds in the D.C. metropolitan area, FamCamp generally offers significantly lower rates, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious military travelers.
- Access to Base Amenities: Campers have access to various on-base facilities and services, which may include the commissary, Exchange, fitness centers, golf courses, and other Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) programs, depending on base policies and eligibility. Joint Base Andrews is known for its golf courses, offering an additional recreational opportunity.
- Security: Being on an active military installation provides an enhanced sense of security and safety for campers.
- Community Atmosphere: The campground fosters a sense of camaraderie among military families, providing a unique environment for connection and shared experiences.
- Concrete Pads: Many RV sites feature concrete pads, offering a level and stable surface for parking.
FamCamp, as a military-operated facility, does not typically run commercial "promotions" in the same way civilian campgrounds do. However, its pricing structure inherently offers a significant benefit to eligible users. Rates are generally set and are notably lower than comparable civilian campgrounds in the region.
- Standard Pricing: RV sites (full hook-up) typically range from $16.00 to $22.00 per night, with partial hook-up sites at around $13.00 and no hook-up sites at $10.00. Weekly rates may also be available, providing further savings for longer stays.
- Reservation Policy: Reservations are required and can be made in advance: Active Duty can book up to 6 months ahead, Retirees up to 4 months, and Reservists up to 2 months. Stays are generally limited to 2 weeks for advance bookings, with extensions up to 4 weeks, and a maximum stay of 30 days, extendable by another 30 days based on availability.
- Cancellation Policy: A 72-hour cancellation notice is usually required to receive a refund for the first night's deposit.
It is important to note that prices are subject to change without prior notice, so it's always best to confirm current rates and policies when making a reservation. While no specific discount codes are publicly advertised for FamCamp itself, military members often qualify for various discounts at other local attractions or services, which can indirectly enhance their overall travel experience from FamCamp.

FamCamp Reviews
We have stayed at numerous military campgrounds and this BY FAR is the most run down, over grown and rudest Outdoor Rec office staff we have encountered. The grass is literally over a foot tall or more in areas everywhere. Picnic table falling apart, water being shut off without notification, staff in office very passive aggressive when asked basic questions. When checking in, I very politely asked when the grass would be cut and response was “Sir, it’s been raining. We can’t cut the grass in the rain.” By the length of the grass, it has not been cut in an VERY long time! Extremely noisy due to road next to camp ground. This campground is a disgrace.
May 16, 2024 · Keith NealThis place is low awful, grass not cut, standing water all around the pad, and the pot holes are everywhere. Not up to military standards!
Apr 01, 2025 · Ben CahnRV spots are concrete pads, area is spacious, FHU was $45. Many empty spots. Two washers($1.50) and two dryers($1). All of them worked well. Kids enjoyed doing a puzzle and playing with a mousetrap boardgame thats available in TV lounge. However the TV lounge has a lot of cobweb and dust. Pool table had no balls and covered in spiderwebs. Water heater in laundry room is spilling water. Toilets and showers were disgusting. There was trash on our site. Huge garbage bag in fire pit and grass growing in another. Water was leaking from the spigot in the empty campsite next to us. Campground is not taken care of.
Nov 01, 2022 · La Familia HenryUpon arrival the park seems overgrown and outdated. There are clear signs and directives posted. The sites are overgrown and not well maintained. Outside of the concrete pad the sites are overgrown and not campchair friendly even around the sites fire pits. The area is dog friendly however the dog park is very small and mostly accommodating to smaller dogs. The general bathrooms and laundry rooms have spiders. The perks of the camping area is its closeness to the base and surrounding areas. There are no kids playgrounds located in the area.
May 02, 2024 · Patti BarmanI like the concrete pad... thats the highlight of this place. Restrooms are gross and outdated. Laundry room is dirty, gross and outdated. Getting to try and check in is ridiculous. For $45 a night I expected better.
