For Georgians looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Dahlonega area, particularly near the scenic Etowah River, the Etowah River Campground has historically been a consideration. Located at 229 Etowah River Campground Rd (some listings may show 437 Rider Mill Rd, Dahlonega, GA 30533, USA), this campground is situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, offering access to the river known for activities like fishing and even gold panning.
It's important for prospective campers, especially local Georgians planning a visit, to be aware that recent customer experiences and reviews for Etowah River Campground highlight significant concerns regarding its current condition and management. While the natural setting along the Etowah River presents potential for a pleasant outdoor experience, reports from multiple visitors indicate issues that could impact your stay. This overview aims to provide factual information based on available public data, allowing you to make an informed decision for your next camping adventure in Georgia.
Etowah River Campground is situated at 229 Etowah River Campground Rd, Dahlonega, GA 30533, USA. Some online sources also list the address as 437 Rider Mill Road, Dahlonega, GA 30533. It's advisable to verify the exact entrance point if relying on GPS. This location places the campground near the historic town of Dahlonega, renowned for its gold rush history and charming mountain town atmosphere. The campground is nestled at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, offering a picturesque natural backdrop.
For Georgians, accessing Dahlonega typically involves traveling north on major routes like GA-400, which leads directly to the Dahlonega area. From Atlanta, the drive is generally around an hour to an hour and a half, depending on traffic. Once in Dahlonega, local roads lead to the campground. The campground itself is noted to have approximately 1800 feet of riverfront along the Etowah River, making river access a key feature of its location. However, recent reviews mention that the internal roads within the campground can be challenging, described as "horrible," "full of mud and potholes everywhere," which may impact accessibility for certain vehicles, particularly larger RVs or those with lower clearance. Visitors should be prepared for potentially unmaintained road conditions upon arrival.
Based on various public listings and past information, Etowah River Campground has offered a range of services designed to accommodate campers. However, it is critical to cross-reference these with recent customer reviews to understand the current state of these offerings.
Campsites: The campground reportedly has a total of 85 campsites, including 59 RV sites and 26 tent sites. Several tent sites are located directly on the river.
RV Hookups: RV sites are listed as having full hookups (water, sewer, and electric, with both 30 and 50 amp service available).
WiFi: WiFi service is listed as an amenity. However, recent customer reviews describe the WiFi as "spotty," suggesting unreliable connectivity.
Bathhouse/Restrooms: Public listings indicate the presence of a bathhouse with restrooms and hot showers. Crucially, recent customer reviews explicitly state issues such as "no toilet paper" in the bathhouse, raising concerns about cleanliness and maintenance.
Laundry Facilities: Some older listings mention laundry facilities, which would be a convenient amenity for longer stays. It is unclear from recent customer feedback if this service is currently maintained.
River Access: Direct access to the Etowah River is a key feature, allowing for activities like fishing and tubing (seasonal, typically May until Labor Day for a fee).
Playground: A playground for kids is listed as an amenity, offering recreational space for younger campers.
Pet-Friendly: The campground is generally listed as pet-friendly. However, a significant concern raised in recent reviews is the presence of "dog droppings everywhere," indicating a lack of enforcement or maintenance regarding pet waste.
Gold Panning: Given the historical context of Dahlonega, gold panning is an activity often associated with the area, and the river access may facilitate this for interested campers.
It is strongly advised that prospective visitors contact the campground directly to confirm the availability and current condition of all listed amenities before planning a trip, especially in light of the negative feedback from recent customers.
When considering the Etowah River Campground, it's essential to present both its intended highlights and the concerning realities highlighted by recent visitor experiences.
Proximity to Etowah River: The campground's primary appeal lies in its location directly on the Etowah River. This offers potential for fishing (known for trout), tubing, and general enjoyment of the river environment. Several tent sites are noted to be directly on the riverfront.
Dahlonega Area Attractions: Being near Dahlonega means access to the historic town, known for its gold rush history, wineries, and access to the Blue Ridge Mountains for hiking and scenic drives.
Variety of Sites: The availability of both RV sites (with full hookups) and tent sites caters to different camping preferences.
However, it is crucial to address the significant negative feedback that appears in recent customer reviews, which directly impacts the perceived "highlights" and overall suitability of the campground:
Poor Road Maintenance: A recurring complaint is the "horrible," "mud and potholes everywhere" condition of the internal roads, which can be a major deterrent and impact accessibility.
Lack of Maintenance and Cleanliness: Visitors report "litter everywhere" and issues with the bathhouse, specifically "no toilet paper," indicating a severe lack of general upkeep.
Unlevel Sites: Some reviews mention that "a lot of the sites aren't even level," which can be a significant inconvenience for RVers and tent campers alike.
Poor Customer Service/Hostility: Multiple reviews describe the "new owners" as "rude and hostile" and that they "accosted campers," leading to extremely negative interactions. Concerns about owners creating new profiles to hide old reviews also point to a lack of transparency.
High Pricing for Limited Amenities: Campers feel they are charged "way too much for there to be nothing to do" at the campground, especially given the reported lack of maintenance and amenities.
Spotty WiFi: While WiFi is listed as an amenity, its unreliable nature is noted.
Dog Waste Issues: "Dog droppings everywhere" suggests a significant problem with cleanliness and pet waste management.
These serious concerns expressed by recent visitors heavily outweigh any potential positives from the location or advertised amenities.
Address: 229 Etowah River Campground Rd, Dahlonega, GA 30533, USA (Note: Some sources also list 437 Rider Mill Road as the address.)
Phone: (706) 867-7528
Mobile Phone: +1 706-867-7528 (This appears to be the same main contact number.)
Given the significant concerns raised in recent customer reviews, it is absolutely paramount that any prospective camper contact the campground directly using the provided phone number before planning a visit. This will allow you to inquire about the current conditions of the roads, amenities, and general atmosphere, and assess whether the reported issues have been addressed. While online presence might exist (e.g., through Wix or other listing sites), direct communication is essential for obtaining the most accurate and current information.
Based on the preponderance of recent customer reviews, the Etowah River Campground, in its current state, appears to be largely unsuitable for locals seeking a positive and well-maintained camping experience in Georgia. While its location near the scenic Etowah River and the charming town of Dahlonega offers inherent potential for outdoor enjoyment, the overwhelming negative feedback from recent visitors paints a concerning picture.
Locals, like any discerning camper, prioritize a clean, safe, and welcoming environment. The consistent reports of "horrible" unmaintained roads, "litter everywhere," non-functional amenities like a bathhouse with "no toilet paper," and widespread "dog droppings everywhere" directly contradict these fundamental expectations. Furthermore, the alleged "rude and hostile" behavior from new ownership and accusations of violating review policies are serious red flags that would deter most Georgians from considering this campground.
While the idea of camping by the Etowah River with access to Dahlonega's attractions is appealing, the current conditions described by recent campers suggest that the experience at Etowah River Campground falls far short of acceptable standards. For Georgians, who have access to numerous well-regarded state parks and private campgrounds throughout the state, there are many other options that can provide a much more enjoyable, reliable, and respectful outdoor experience. The consensus from recent reviews is clear: "Long story short go anywhere else." Therefore, despite its geographical promise, it is advisable for locals to consider alternative camping destinations until significant, verifiable improvements are confirmed at Etowah River Campground.

Etowah River Campground Reviews
Took over ownership of the campground. Never maintained roads, dog droppings everywhere, accosted campers, offered no amenities (with spotty wifi and a bathhouse with no toilet paper), and then created a new profile after they took over the old business because they didn't like the old reviews. They even violated Google reviews policy by leaving themselves a 5 star reviews on the old Google Business Page. Long story short go anywhere else.
Apr 28, 2024 · NicoleSupposed new owners have somehow let this campground turn to ruin. The roads are horrible full of mud and potholes everywhere. The new owners are rude and hostile. There’s litter everywhere. Can’t believe they failed to do their job this badly. They charger way to much for there to be nothing to do and not much to do nearby. Alot of the sites arent even level. Won’t be recommending.
Apr 28, 2024 · jrzyxEI was very skeptical about staying at this campground because of the reviews. I want to say it could not be farther from the truth. The place is beautiful on the river. Cellphone service is zero but they do have Wi-Fi that helps a little. All the employees have been very welcoming and accommodating. When we first arrived they brought us a brand new fire ring and put stones around it. We travel full time for work. It is nice to have a place you can feel at home and enjoy instead of like a prison like some campgrounds.
Jun 01, 2023 · Haley MoonI would never recommend this campground to anyone! Do not stay here! Jennifer, the owner, is extremely rude as well as the campground host Tommy. There are rules that are not listed or made clear. The business is not ADA tolerant and made it very clear that neither of them cared and that someone with a disability was not welcome. I have Crohn’s Disease and have to use the restroom frequently. We left our home 4 hours away from Dahlonega in plenty of time to make check in time, but due to my Crohn’s I had to make multiple stops which caused us to run behind. We attempted to call the number given at 4:00 with a Verizon message saying the call could not be connected. We tried 10 other times to call with the same message. We finally found another number and left a message at 6:30 to give an ETA. A resident of the campground messaged us on Facebook with another number to call. We reached Tommy at 8:03 saying that we were 30 minutes away and the reason for running late. We were told by Tommy that we were past the check in time and could not check in that night and would have to wait until the next morning at 10 AM. He also was happy to tell us that we could stay the night in the local Walmart parking lot. In speaking to the FB friend, he informed us that he knew the owners and was sure if we went to the office and called the owner that she would understand and let us go ahead and park. Once arriving at the campground we called the number listed and was connected to Jennifer. We were told that we knew the rules, she knew nothing of the name we gave her of the FB friend, and we should have left earlier. I tried explaining to her the situation of my Crohn’s. Her exact words were “I don’t care or want to hear your long story” and “if you are not off my property in 5 minutes I will call the law”. She also stated that she was refunding the deposit and we were not allowed to stay at all. So, now we are 4 hours away from our home with no campground to stay in for the 4 day weekend. In my 42 years of camping, from being a child with my parents and now as an adult, I have never experienced anything like this. Again, do not waste your money.
Jan 13, 2024 · Shanna TuggleEtowah river campground was a great place to camp. the reviews do not do it justice. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. the campsite overlooked a river and was peaceful. the bathrooms were clean and close to the campsites. cellphone service was a bit spotty. the campground was close to dahlongea and amicalola falls state park. we thoroughly enjoyed our experience at etowah river campground and highly recommend it to other travelers.
