Estes Park Campground at East Portal is strategically located at 3420 Tunnel Rd, Estes Park, CO 80517, USA. This prime address places it just a short drive from downtown Estes Park and, crucially, at a gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park.
From downtown Estes Park, accessibility is straightforward. You take U.S. Highway 36/CO 66 west for approximately 1.7 miles. After the stoplight at the intersection of Mary's Lake Road, you'll turn left onto Colorado Highway 66 (also known as Tunnel Road) and follow it for about 3.3 miles directly to the campground. This easy navigation means you're "close to town and the park," allowing for quick trips to Estes Park for supplies, dining, or exploring its shops and attractions.
The campground's location at the "end of a beautiful road" ensures "zero traffic noise," contributing significantly to its "quiet and comfortable" ambiance. While its elevation of 8,300 feet provides stunning "views of the snow covered peaks in Rocky Mountain National Park," it also means campers should be prepared for typical mountain weather, including potential wind and cooler evenings. The roads within the campground are described as "primitive and narrow," making navigation for "large rigs challenging," which is why there's a strict maximum length of 22 feet for RVs and trailers. This focus on smaller camping units helps maintain its intimate and natural feel. Its direct connection to hiking trails leading into RMNP is a major draw, offering unparalleled foot access to the wilderness without needing to drive further into the park.

Estes Park Campground at East Portal Reviews
What a gem of a campground! We absolutely loved it here. It's quiet and comfortable, great bathrooms, close to town and the park, great views, hiking trails right there, and super nice people working there. Would definitely stay there again.
Jun 23, 2025 · Donetta DalmanWe’ve stayed here several times. Great campground for smaller campers and tenters! Friendly staff and nice restrooms with showers. Can hike right up to Sprague Lake in RMNP. Also nice and close to Estes Park.
Jun 08, 2025 · Tammy KosleyVery clean facilities, clean campground, checked regularly. Lots of shade, friendly attentive staff, ice is cheaper than the gas station down the way. Hiking trails close by and fairly close to the main park entrance of RMNP. Easy to get to town. The only down side is lack of sewer hookups. But, plenty of bathrooms. We were able to make it through a weeks stay in our trailer by utilizing the facilities for showers and potty.
Jul 03, 2025 · Bret LewisThis was my wife's and my first time camping as adults, and my daughter's first time camping ever. We may have spoiled ourselves on camping anywhere else. All four of the hosts that I interacted with were so friendly and helpful. They brought our firewood over to our campsite, and really made the experience great. Our campsite was nice, fairly well shaded, and close to the restrooms. The restrooms were well maintained and clean. My only feedback would be it would have been nice to have a couple more stalls available, but I also understand that space is at a premium. Be aware, the host station is only open until 6:00pm, which I didn't realize. Fortunately, we pulled in a few minutes before 6:00, but I'm not sure what would have happened if we had unknowingly arrived later. Despite the close call, this was a wonderful experience, and I highly recommend them!
Jun 13, 2025 · Shawn TooveyMy wife and granddaughter stayed here for almost a week. We found the park staff's hospitality excellent. They went out of their way constantly to help all their visitors. The bathhouses were well used but kept in excellent condition. We would highly recommend this campground.
