Elk Lake Campground Introduce
For Oregonians seeking the quintessential high desert lake camping experience, Elk Lake Campground offers an idyllic retreat nestled between the majestic peaks of Mount Bachelor and the Three Sisters mountains. This US Forest Service (USFS) campground provides a perfect blend of rustic charm and essential comforts, making it a beloved destination for families, hikers, and water enthusiasts alike. Unlike some bustling resort areas, Elk Lake Campground maintains a peaceful atmosphere, where the focus remains on the stunning natural surroundings and the clear, cool waters of the lake.
Elk Lake is renowned for its welcoming environment, where a 10 mph speed limit on the water encourages primarily non-motorized crafts, ensuring a serene experience for swimmers, paddlers, and anglers. Visitors consistently praise the "best camp spots with lake views" and the respectful community of campers, highlighting its reputation as a "safe and VERY family friendly" place. Whether you're planning an adventurous hiking trip to nearby peaks, a relaxing day by the water, or simply a quiet escape under the vast Central Oregon sky, Elk Lake Campground provides the ideal setting. This article will explore what makes this a must-visit spot for locals across Oregon, providing all the details you need to plan your next memorable outdoor adventure.
Elk Lake Campground is located on the north end of Elk Lake, directly along the picturesque Cascade Lakes National Scenic Byway, with its general address being Oregon 97413, USA. This places it approximately 33 miles southwest of Bend, within the vast and beautiful Deschutes National Forest. The Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway itself is a major draw, climbing from Central Oregon's high desert floor into the Cascade Range, winding through snow-capped peaks and alpine lakes over its 66-mile course.
For Oregon locals, accessing Elk Lake Campground is part of the scenic adventure. From Bend, the drive southwest on Cascade Lakes Highway (Highway 46) is incredibly picturesque. While the byway is paved and generally well-maintained, some reviewers note that roads leading to the campground from other directions, particularly if coming from Detroit via Breitenbush Highway, can become "rocky" and might require an SUV or 4-wheel drive for comfort, though the primary access from Bend is generally smooth. The relative proximity to Bend means that while you feel immersed in a remote wilderness, the amenities of a larger town are within a reasonable driving distance, providing a convenient balance. This accessibility, combined with the stunning natural beauty along the drive, makes Elk Lake Campground a practical and highly appealing destination for residents from across Oregon.

Elk Lake Campground Reviews
Simple campgrounds on first come first serve basis. Rough road driving out there from Detroit. The Breitenbush highway is good but then it goes onto a rocky road and you better have an SUV and 4-wheel drive.Picknick benches and barbecues are available at the grounds. Most spots have nice lake views. Endless hiking options. The quickest are golden butte and Battle ax which both have amazing views of Jefferson, the sisters and Hood eastbound
Jun 05, 2025 · Tobias P.This lake is the quintessential high desert lake camping experience. Nestled in between Mount Bachelor & the Three Sisters mountains. Clear & cool & great for swimming! The speed limit is 10 mph which results in 90% non-motorized water craft. The USFS campground has the best camp spots with lake views (not the resort side). The campground is safe and VERY family friendly. Campers are respectful. The resort side has a camp host that can communicate with Deschutes County, if needed. Plus, there is strong Verizon cell coverage. The vault toilets are attended to, (with the exception being the handicap vault toilet in the day use area that was kept locked for the days we were there). As of late June, Deschutes County has still not turned on the water spigots—even though the website says they’re turned on in May. 🤔But utilizing the amenities at the resort (boat rental, restaurant, etc) is a bonus.
