As one happy visitor declared, it's an "Absolutely GORGEOUS place to camp at" that will leave you "BLOWN AWAY every time."
This article is crafted specifically for you, the Colorado local, providing a clear, engaging, and factual overview of Eleven Mile Reservoir as a camping destination. We'll delve into its remarkable location, the diverse camping options it provides—from amenity-rich sites to more primitive areas—and the wealth of activities that make it a year-round paradise. Whether you're an avid angler hoping for "2 to 3 pounders," a boater seeking uncrowded waters, or simply looking for a tranquil spot to enjoy a "fantastic nightsky viewing," prepare to discover why Eleven Mile Reservoir is a treasured gem in our magnificent state.
Eleven Mile Reservoir is a prominent feature of Eleven Mile State Park, located at Lake George, CO 80827, USA. This impressive 3,400-acre reservoir sits at an elevation of approximately 8,600 feet in South Park, a high alpine meadow characterized by panoramic mountain views and dramatic granite outcrops. The park itself encompasses over 7,600 acres, providing a vast playground for outdoor enthusiasts.
While the name "Eleven Mile Reservoir" often refers to the entire recreational area, it comprises multiple distinct campgrounds catering to a variety of preferences. These include developed campgrounds like Rocky Ridge, North Shore, and Stoll Mountain, which offer a range of amenities, as well as more primitive areas for those seeking a rugged experience. As one reviewer highlighted, they've been "camping here for years (mainly primitive area)" and are always amazed by the beauty. The reservoir is primarily known for its exceptional fishing, often stocked with various trout species, kokanee salmon, and northern pike, making it a "trophy fishing" destination. Beyond fishing, its vast surface area and typically reliable winds create ideal conditions for sailing, windsurfing, and other non-motorized boating activities, making it a vibrant hub for water sports. The open basin topography means that while tree cover might be sparse in some areas, the unobstructed views and expansive skies are breathtaking.
Accessibility to Eleven Mile Reservoir and its campgrounds is generally straightforward for Colorado locals. The park is located approximately 45 minutes to an hour west of Colorado Springs. From US Highway 24, typically after passing through the town of Lake George, you would turn onto County Road 90 (or County Road 92, depending on the specific entrance or campground you're aiming for). While these roads are generally well-maintained, some sections, particularly leading to more primitive or less-traveled areas, might be gravel or subject to rougher conditions. It's always a good idea to check current park conditions, especially during or after inclement weather.
As part of the Colorado State Park system, Eleven Mile State Park requires a daily vehicle pass (or an annual State Parks Pass) for entry. The park is open year-round, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, offering opportunities for both summer and winter recreation. Its relatively close proximity to major population centers like Colorado Springs and Denver makes it an ideal destination for both day trips and extended camping vacations. As one reviewer suggested, it’s a perfect spot for "a day trip. Pack a lunch and grab your pole. A bad day at the lake is still better than a good day at work. Take your spouse and the dog. Just go trust me." This ease of access ensures that Coloradans can readily enjoy this natural treasure.

May 01, 2025 · Gene TangAmazing reservoir! It’s worth the drive to get up here because it’s not crowded at all. If you’re paddle boarding, go to Coyote point because there are great rocks to explore and lots of fun little coves to walk out on. I loved this place and will definitely be coming back here.
