Egan Basin Guard Station Introduce
For those who truly want to disconnect from the modern world and immerse themselves in Idaho’s rugged beauty, Egan Basin Guard Station offers an unforgettable experience. This unique destination isn’t a typical campground but rather a rustic, single-room A-frame cabin, perfect for a secluded retreat. It provides a simple, backcountry living experience that has become a cherished spot for many Idahoans. Situated in a stunning, open meadow surrounded by mixed conifers and quaking aspens, the guard station is a place where you can find genuine peace and solitude. Whether you visit in the summer to enjoy the vibrant wildflowers and hiking trails or in the winter to access it via snowmobile for a cozy, snowy escape, Egan Basin provides a quiet, remote, and beautiful setting for all kinds of outdoor adventures.
Egan Basin Guard Station is located in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, near Preston, Idaho. Its exact location is purposefully remote, a key part of its appeal. Getting there requires a drive that takes you deep into the heart of the Bear River Mountains. One review from a camper who had visited noted that it's about a 31-mile drive southwest of Montpelier, Idaho, with directions involving Forest Roads 411 and 415. The road to the guard station itself can be rough in places, and a camper mentioned that a 4-wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicle might be necessary, depending on conditions. This remoteness, however, is a deliberate feature, ensuring that you are isolated and alone, as one visitor described.
The guard station itself is an accessible spot, with on-site parking available. However, a major feature and a deliberate part of the experience is the lack of cell service. For those looking for a true break from technology, this is a significant benefit. It allows families and friends to truly connect with each other and with their surroundings, free from digital distractions. During the winter, access is only possible by snowmobile, which transforms the location into a pristine, snow-covered paradise for winter sports enthusiasts.
Egan Basin Guard Station provides a unique set of services, focusing on the essentials for a comfortable backcountry stay.
Services Offered:
Tent Sites: In addition to the cabin, there is space around the guard station for tent camping, accommodating a larger group of up to 15 people.

On-Site Parking: On-site parking is available for vehicles, making it easy to unload and set up.
Wood Stove: The cabin is equipped with a wood stove for heat, a welcome amenity for chilly nights. Firewood may also be available on-site.
The charm and appeal of Egan Basin Guard Station are found in its unique features and highlights, which create a memorable and rustic experience.

What is worth choosing Egan Basin Guard Station?
Choosing Egan Basin Guard Station is a decision to embrace a truly authentic and remote outdoor experience. It is not for those seeking the amenities of a modern RV park, but for those who desire a deep connection with nature and a chance to truly unplug. The unique appeal of this place lies in its a-frame cabin, which provides a cozy and rustic shelter from the elements, complete with a wood stove that keeps it warm on chilly nights. Egan Basin Guard Station Reviews
Beautiful cabin. Lots of mosquitoes
June 30 · Britney AbeytaGreat warming shack in the winter for snowmobiling. Picnic table and outhouse in the summer.
July 05 · Carl QuintonBeautiful surroundings. Road is was pretty rough. The mosquitos were so unbearable that we packed up.amd left just a few hours in. We had on 4 layers of bug spray, and the suckers even got me through my jeans.and bit my face! Maybe go later in the summer once the snow melt has been long gone and they've died off.
July 13 · Jamie GormleyFun little place to stay. Road getting there from Utah was kinda sketch, I would suggest the route from St Charles ID instead even though its longer. The description on recreation.gov says a car can drive up there but I wouldnt drive a car on either route. Saw a bunch of deer but no elk...just their poop :)
September 24 · Dan GIt was a great place to stay like being in heaven. Although I think they should let you check in early and check out later and have a little longer dead space in between. After all they're not trying to make money on us, are they? Anyway it was a great getaway.
