Echo Park Campground

Campground ★4.0

Maybell, CO 81640, USA

4.0
We really enjoyed Echo Park Campground. It’s a beautiful spot with lots of scenic canyon vistas and wildlife. We saw deer, fox, skunk, osprey and lots of song birds.I do think it’s worth noting that Dinosaur National Monument in general isn’t the most dog-friendly place, as dogs are not allowed in the water or on most trails, but rangers and park staff seemed laid back. Some camp sites at Echo Park also lack shade during the mid-day heat, but we were there in the middle of a July week with lots of options to choose from. We switched from a canyon site one evening to a rive-access and shaded site the next. The warnings are accurate - the road to the canyon does change quickly. We were able to make it in and out in a Subaru Crosstrek using X-mode without any concerns following a light rain shower. Rain, however, does make the road extremely difficult to traverse and very slick.Lastly, it’s pack-in and pack-out (unlike other campgrounds in the park), so do plan to not have access to a trash can during your stay.Overall, it’s a beautiful place with canyons, river, wildlife, petroglyphs and a whispering canyon to explore! - Maia Yates

Echo Park Campground Introduce

For Colorado locals who have explored the Rockies and are looking for a different kind of mountain experience, Echo Park Campground offers a stunning and secluded alternative. Nestled within the vast expanse of Dinosaur National Monument, this campground is a true hidden gem, providing a breathtaking, rugged landscape that rivals even the Grand Canyon. It's a place where the towering cliffs of Steamboat Rock stand guard over the confluence of the Green and Yampa Rivers, and the silence is broken only by the whispers of the wind and the sounds of nature. This is a destination for the prepared adventurer, not the casual camper, offering a rewarding experience for those willing to make the journey.

Echo Park is a testament to the wild, untouched beauty of Colorado's high desert. As one visitor noted, the scenery is absolutely "breathtaking," featuring dramatic canyon vistas and an abundance of wildlife. You can expect to see deer, fox, and a variety of birds, adding a dynamic and exciting element to your stay. The campground is a perfect basecamp for exploring the area's unique features, from ancient Fremont petroglyphs on the canyon walls to the "whispering canyon" itself. While the campsites are primitive, they offer essential amenities that make for a comfortable stay. It’s a place where you can feel completely off the grid while still having access to clean water and restrooms, a perfect balance for many Colorado campers who cherish their independence.

It's important to set expectations for the journey to Echo Park, as it is part of the adventure. The drive is a significant one, with a gravel road that can be challenging, especially after rain. However, as one reviewer pointed out, a high-clearance vehicle is recommended, but a 4x4 is not always required on dry days. The effort is more than worth it, as the reward is a beautiful, uncrowded campground with unparalleled views. This sense of exclusivity and the raw natural beauty of the area are what make Echo Park so special. It’s a place to leave behind the distractions of modern life and immerse yourself in an environment that feels ancient and pristine. The opportunities for hiking and wildlife viewing are endless, making it an ideal destination for those who want to spend their time actively exploring the magnificent landscape.

Echo Park Campground is located within Dinosaur National Monument near Maybell, CO 81640, USA. The journey to the campground is a key part of the experience. From the town of Dinosaur, Colorado, you will take the Harpers Corner Road for about 24 miles before turning onto the unpaved Echo Park Road. This 13-mile road is a high-clearance, 4WD-recommended route that features steep grades, switchbacks, and can become impassable during wet weather. The journey takes approximately 90 minutes from the Canyon Visitor Center near Dinosaur, but the exact time depends heavily on road conditions and your vehicle's capabilities. It's highly recommended to check current road conditions with the National Park Service before you go, as rain can make the road extremely slick and difficult to traverse. The road is also not recommended for large RVs or trailers due to the steep, narrow sections. Despite the challenges, the drive itself is incredibly scenic, offering stunning views and a taste of the adventure that awaits. On-site parking is available at the campground, but campers should be aware that it is a pack-in, pack-out site, meaning you must take all of your trash with you. This practice helps preserve the pristine beauty of this remote location for future visitors.
