Dutra Flat Campground is located in the expansive Big Sur region, specifically at Big Sur, CA 93920, USA. This places it within the Los Padres National Forest, and more precisely, within or very close to the Silver Peak Wilderness. Its remote nature means it's not a drive-up campground; access is strictly via hiking trails.
The primary and most common route to Dutra Flat Campground is via the Salmon Creek Trail from Highway 1. The trailhead for Salmon Creek Trail is situated directly off Highway 1, providing relatively straightforward initial access. From there, the journey transforms into a scenic hike, typically described as a round trip of approximately 10 miles. Some sources suggest routes as long as 15 miles with significant elevation gain if combining with other trails like the Spruce Creek Trail or a larger Dutra Loop.
The hike itself is noted for being mostly shaded, offering respite from the California sun, particularly during warmer months. However, hikers should be prepared for varying terrain. Reviews indicate that some portions of the trail consist of loose rocks, making trekking poles highly recommended, especially when carrying a backpack. You will also encounter spring runoffs and a couple of drainage creeks from the mountainside, which may require careful crossing, particularly during or after wet periods. While the 10-mile round trip can be managed in an afternoon by experienced hikers, allowing ample time for the trek, especially with pack weight, is advisable.
Due to its remote backcountry location, cellular service is virtually non-existent at Dutra Flat Campground and along much of the trail. This lack of connectivity is a key aspect of its wilderness appeal, but it also necessitates thorough preparation. Hikers should carry detailed maps (such as those from bigsurtrailmap.net or reliable GPS devices with pre-downloaded routes), inform others of their itinerary, and be prepared for self-sufficiency in case of emergencies. The challenging yet beautiful hike to Dutra Flat is an integral part of the experience, offering stunning views and a genuine sense of adventure even before reaching the campsite.
Primitive Campsites: Dutra Flat is a true pack-in/pack-out trail camp. This means there are no developed facilities like paved pads, RV hookups, or designated restrooms beyond what nature provides. The site offers a cleared, roomy area suitable for pitching several tents (accommodating 3-4 comfortably, more if "squished together").
Fire Pit: A key amenity at Dutra Flat is the presence of a full-sized fire pit. This allows campers to enjoy campfires (subject to current fire restrictions, which are crucial in California's dry climate) for warmth, cooking, and ambiance.
Small Grill: A small grill is typically found atop the fire pit, providing a convenient surface for cooking over an open flame.
Picnic Table: A full-sized picnic table is available, offering a sturdy surface for meal preparation and dining, a welcome convenience at a backcountry site.
Shovel: In a thoughtful gesture, a shovel has often been left at the campsite, useful for managing the fire pit and practicing Leave No Trace principles for human waste (digging catholes).
No Running Water: Critically, Dutra Flat Campground does not have running water. While some historical reports and recent surveys (post-2022) indicate a potential spring with a pipe and trough that may flow intermittently, especially after wet periods, it is never guaranteed. Campers must assume they need to pack in all their water or be prepared to filter and treat water from unreliable seasonal sources if available. Always check current conditions and prepare for a dry camp.
No Cell Service: As a remote wilderness camp, there is no cellular reception. This emphasizes self-reliance and proper backcountry preparation for communication and safety.
Shaded Hike: The trail to Dutra Flat from Highway 1 is predominantly shaded, making for a more comfortable and enjoyable trek, even during sunnier days.
Remote and Secluded: Dutra Flat offers a genuine wilderness experience, far removed from crowds and urban noise. It's an ideal spot for those seeking profound solitude and a deep connection with nature.
Fenced Site Area: Uniquely, the campsite area is described as being "fenced in." This feature might offer a small degree of separation from wildlife, or historically, livestock, adding a distinctive element to the site.
Beautiful Scenery: The hike to the campground is noted for its beauty, with diverse natural surroundings including spring runoffs and drainage creeks, offering picturesque views along the way.
Access to Other Trails: Near Dutra Flat, there are forks to other trails, providing opportunities for extended hikes, additional exploration, and more gorgeous views for adventurous trekkers.
Clean and Maintained: Despite its primitive nature, the campsite is consistently reported as being "free of trash," indicating responsible use by past campers and potentially occasional maintenance efforts by volunteers.
Manageable Distance for Backpacking: The approximate 10-mile round trip from Highway 1 makes it an achievable backpacking destination for a weekend trip, balancing a sense of remoteness with practical accessibility.
Abundant Shade: The fully shaded nature of the campsite offers a cool and comfortable retreat, particularly beneficial during midday hours in warmer seasons.
Address: Big Sur, CA 93920, USA (accessible via Salmon Creek Trail from Highway 1)
Please note: As a primitive pack-in/pack-out trail camp within the Los Padres National Forest, Dutra Flat Campground does not have a direct phone number for reservations or inquiries. Information regarding trail conditions, fire restrictions, and general wilderness regulations can be obtained through the U.S. Forest Service, specifically the Monterey Ranger District office. It is highly recommended to check current conditions, including water availability and fire restrictions, before planning your trip.
For Californians, Dutra Flat Campground represents a quintessential Big Sur backcountry experience, perfect for those who seek more than just a car camping trip. It is exceptionally well-suited for local residents who are seasoned backpackers, avid hikers, and individuals passionate about wilderness preservation and self-reliance.
The "pack in / pack out" nature of Dutra Flat is a significant draw for experienced Californians. It provides an opportunity to engage with the environment on a deeper level, embracing the challenge of carrying all necessities and leaving no trace behind. This type of camping fosters a profound connection to the land, offering a sense of accomplishment and a unique perspective on California's natural grandeur that drive-up sites simply cannot provide.
The scenic and mostly shaded hike along the Salmon Creek Trail is a reward in itself, allowing locals to explore the diverse ecosystems of the Big Sur coast range, from lush riparian zones to sections with panoramic views. The ability to extend hikes onto adjacent trails further enhances the appeal for those who want to spend multiple days immersing themselves in the area's extensive trail network.
Moreover, the primitive nature of the camp, complete with a fire pit and picnic table, offers the fundamental elements for a classic wilderness experience. The absence of cell service is a blessing for Californians seeking a true digital detox, allowing for uninterrupted appreciation of the natural sounds and sights. The consistent reports of the campsite being trash-free underscore a shared community value among those who visit: respect for the wilderness, a value deeply ingrained in California's outdoor culture.
For local Californians looking to escape the hustle and bustle of urban life and embark on a rewarding backcountry adventure that truly tests their outdoor skills, Dutra Flat Campground is an outstanding choice. It offers a piece of wild Big Sur that remains relatively untouched, providing an intimate and unforgettable connection with the remarkable landscapes that define their home state.

Some of the trail is loose rocks and you'll cross some spring runoffs and a couple drainage creeks from the mountainside.Round trip, the distance is about 10 miles and is easily manageable in an afternoon. As another reviewer mentioned there's no running water at Dutra but the site is fully shaded, includes a fire pit, a full sized picnic table, and a small grill atop the fire pit. Someone kindly left a shovel up there to empty the fire pit. Flies are kind of annoying midday but they disappear as the sun sets. Also, worth mentioning is that the site area is fenced in.Additionally nearby are forks to other trails for some extra hike time and more gorgeous views. Overall, the site is awesome, free of trash, and roomy to accommodate several campers, 3-4 tents and even more if y'all squish together.
