Deep Creek Camping

Gypsum, CO 81637, USA

4.0
There are 5 free first come first serve numbered campsites. Most are large enough to accommodate a group if needed, they are spacious. We stayed at campsite number one for three nights and shared with a different person each night since it was just the two of us and there were at least 4 spots very spread out for tents to be set up. Each site has one picnic table and fire ring.It was SO NICE! Right by the water so the sound from the river really helped us sleep. The road noise didn't bother us at all since the water was so loud. It was just a very pleasant site. Everyone we met was super nice and chill. Not a lot of garbage around either which was great. - Marley Hartman

Location and Accessibility

Deep Creek Camping is conveniently located in Gypsum, CO 81637, USA. More specifically, it is situated off I-70, near Exit 133 (Dotsero). To reach it, you head north on Colorado River Road for approximately 1.6 miles, then turn left onto Coffee Pot Road (#600 National Forest Access). There's a BLM Deep Creek Campground sign at the turn, and the recreation area is about 1 mile up Coffee Pot Road. It's important to respect any posted private property along the way.

One of the most significant advantages of Deep Creek Camping is its relative ease of access from a major interstate, I-70, making it an excellent spot for a quick layover or a longer stay without venturing too far off the beaten path. Despite its proximity to the highway, customer reviews consistently highlight that "the road noise didn't bother us at all since the water was so loud," confirming that the sounds of the nearby stream effectively mask any traffic. While reviewers mention having to "park close to the road and walk in a bit" for some sites, indicating a slightly more primitive walk-in experience for tents, the sites are generally "large enough to accommodate a group" and "very spread out." The road into the campground, Coffee Pot Road, is noted as being a "beautiful area," suggesting that the journey itself is part of the scenic experience. While some reviewers noted that the road can be a "little narrow, with a steep drop off on one side," overall accessibility is good for various vehicle types, including smaller RVs, given the pull-offs along the road for trailers and trucks.

Services Offered

Deep Creek Camping, as a free BLM site, offers a minimalist yet functional set of services, emphasizing self-sufficiency and a "Leave No Trace" ethos.

  • Free Campsites: This is a major highlight, as there are "5 free first come first serve numbered campsites" as well as about "6 free BLM camping sites." This makes it an incredibly budget-friendly option for campers.
  • Spacious Sites: Reviewers frequently mention that most sites are "large enough to accommodate a group if needed" and are "spacious," offering ample room for tents and privacy.
  • Picnic Tables: Each designated campsite is equipped with "one picnic table," providing a convenient surface for meals and gear.
  • Fire Rings: Every site includes a "fire ring" for safe campfires, allowing campers to enjoy the classic campfire experience (always check for current fire restrictions before lighting a fire).
  • Vault Toilet (Limited): There is a "toilet well up the road." However, reviews indicate it was "pretty gross, not cared for, BYOP (Bring your own paper)," suggesting it is a basic, unmaintained vault toilet. Campers should be prepared for primitive restroom facilities or to pack out human waste, as "no cat holes are allowed due to the proximity of the creek to the sites."
  • No Water or Other Hookups: Deep Creek Camping does not provide potable water, electricity, or sewer hookups. Campers must bring their own water for drinking, cooking, and washing.
  • No Trash Service: Consistent with BLM dispersed camping principles, there are no garbage disposal services. Campers must "pack out human waste" and "pack out all of your trash," ensuring the site remains clean.
