The campground is part of the larger Dan Nicholas Park, which is a significant advantage. This means campers have direct access to all the park’s attractions and amenities just a short walk or drive away. While the campground offers a secluded, wooded feel across a small lake from the main attractions, everything remains easily accessible via lakeside trails. This thoughtful layout ensures that campers can enjoy the peace of nature while still having quick access to entertainment and conveniences.
Campsites with Hookups: Most campsites are equipped with electric (30, 50, and 110 amp) and water hookups, catering to both RVs and tents. There are also a few sites available without power and water for a more rustic experience.
Dump Station: A convenient dump station is available for campers, ensuring easy disposal of waste. Non-campers can also use the dump station for a small fee.
Restrooms and Showers: The campground boasts exceptionally clean restrooms and private showers, each with its own door, as noted by visitors. These facilities are maintained to a high standard, providing comfort during your stay.
Camp Store: For your convenience, there is a camp store on-site that sells ice cream, drinks, snacks, and other necessities, perfect for those forgotten items or a quick treat.
Cabin Rentals: For those who prefer a bit more comfort, the campground offers six cabins. These cabins include heat and air conditioning, beds, small microwaves, refrigerators, and outdoor grills and tables with water spigots. Linens are not furnished.
Reservations: Online reservations are available, and a two-night minimum is required for weekend stays. Full payment is needed to hold reservations. While refunds are not given, rain checks are issued if notified at least four days prior to the reservation date.
Gated Access: The campground is gated, and campers receive a combination for entry, enhancing security and peace of mind.
Proximity to Dan Nicholas Park Attractions: One of the biggest draws is the close proximity to the numerous attractions within Dan Nicholas Park. This includes a carousel, miniature golf, a train ride, gem mining, Rowan Wildlife Adventures (a nature center with a zoo), paddle boats on the 10-acre Murtis Lake, a splash pad, and multiple playgrounds.
Fishing Opportunities: Campers can enjoy fishing in the lake without paying the park fishing fee, though a North Carolina fishing license is required, and an armband from the camp store is needed. The lake is well-stocked, offering a great experience for anglers of all ages.
Wooded and Shaded Sites: The campsites are generously sized and primarily located in wooded areas, providing ample shade and a sense of privacy, especially welcome during warmer months.
Family-Friendly Environment: The park and campground are designed with families in mind, offering a wide array of activities that cater to children and adults alike. Special events are often held in season, such as chili cook-offs, ice cream making contests, and Halloween festivities.
Outdoor Theater: The campground features an outdoor theater, adding another dimension to evening entertainment.
Lakeside Access: Many campsites offer private access to Murtis Lake, allowing for serene views and direct access to water activities. One reviewer noted, "The small lake at Dan Nicholas Park is also a big draw for our family. The boys easily spent hours fishing, catching and releasing frogs, watching the ducks and exploring along the trail that wraps around the entire lake."
Walking Trails: Numerous trails are available for hiking and biking, allowing campers to explore the natural beauty of the park.

Dan Nicholas Park Campground Reviews
Absolutely wonderful experience!!! I had site 77. The staff are all very nice and respectful! Was able to check in early to beat the rain and get set up without any problems. The entire area is clean and very well maintained. Bathrooms were exceptionally clean. I really needed a getaway, and this place did not disappoint!!! Will definitely be coming back in the spring! I highly recommend staying here!
Nov 22, 2024 · Heather N. ManningWe had a nice time at the camp, the only thing I didn’t like was that they don’t have tent pads so you end up putting your tent directly on the ground and that dirt dust gets everywhere.Showers were very private, each with their own door which is nice.
Apr 08, 2025 · Joe NCNice campground. Plenty to do with the lake, barnyard, gem mine, train, etc. Restrooms were decent. Toilet paper was TERRIBLE, probably needed like 5 pieces for any thickness. Like must be .0000001 ply lol. There was a squirrel that was very brazen and skilled at stealing food.Park was nice, office was fine. Good spacing between sites.
Jul 09, 2024 · Mike MSuper impressed with this county park! We stayed for the weekend while passing through from out of state and didn’t fully realize what the park had to offer until we arrived. From the peaceful campground, the wildlife park, to the barnyard, and more, there was plenty to do and see without going anywhere. A super clean, well kept, and beautiful park and campground. I highly recommend! Only $35 per night!
May 26, 2024 · Jacob ElliottWe stayed at this campground for a week and I'm not quite sure why it gets so many bad reviews. We camp often and have been many places and this campground is by far one of our top stays. We read many reviews about poor bathrooms, poor cell signal, poor service, but we have experienced none of it.First off the bathrooms are not great but not terrible either. They are old and dated but clean. We have seen many others that were way worse, so it's not as bad as the reviews say.Yes cell signal is nonexistent here. That includes the attraction side of the park too. There is wifi and it's coverage isn't perfect but works well enough. We never had a problem. In fact I'm writing this review on their wifi.We also didn't have any problems with staff, in fact they were all really helpful and polite. As far as the campground itself goes it's pretty nice. Sites have plenty of space between them and were well kept and clean. I saw the staff cleaning out fire pits after each guest left and saw them cleaning the restrooms each day. It's also a short walk to the other side of the lake where all the attractions are. There's lots of stuff for the kids to do and it's really pretty cheap too.Again I have to say it's one of our top places we have stayed at. We will probably come back again.
