Known for its first-come, first-serve policy, it offers a refreshing alternative to the often over-booked reservation systems, making spontaneous trips to the Bayfield area entirely possible. Prepare to be enchanted by the natural beauty, the quiet solitude, and the friendly local touches that make Dalrymple Park a favorite among those who truly appreciate authentic Wisconsin camping.
Dalrymple Park and Campground is ideally located at 86070 WI-13 Trunk, Bayfield, WI 54814, USA. This prime address places it just one mile north of the charming and vibrant downtown Bayfield, right on the waterfront of Lake Superior. This strategic location offers campers unparalleled views of the lake and the picturesque Apostle Islands in the distance, providing a stunning backdrop to your outdoor adventure.
Accessibility to the campground is straightforward via State Highway 13. Its close proximity to Bayfield allows for easy access to the town's numerous attractions, shops, and restaurants, making it convenient for campers who wish to explore the local culture and grab supplies. While some sources indicate a 16-foot archway clearance on 6th Avenue East, larger RVs (up to 30 feet are recommended) can typically access the park via 3rd Avenue East to Memorial Park Drive or Superior Avenue to Memorial Park Drive, ensuring that a wide range of campers can enjoy this spot. The heavily wooded nature of the sites provides privacy, though some spots might require careful maneuvering for larger rigs. A decent-sized parking area is available. The ease of getting to and from Bayfield—many sites mention an easy walk or bike ride to town—adds immense value to the campground's accessibility, allowing campers to enjoy both the peaceful park setting and the lively town.
- First-Come, First-Serve Campsites: The campground operates entirely on a first-come, first-serve basis, meaning no reservations are taken. This allows for spontaneous trips but suggests arriving earlier in the day to secure a spot, especially during weekends or peak season.
- Electric Hookups: Most, if not all, campsites are equipped with 20/30 amp electrical service, providing convenient power for RVs and other camping needs. Some sources also mention cable TV availability at some sites.
- Potable Water Access: Potable water spigots are available throughout the campground, allowing campers to easily fill jugs. While there are no water hookups at individual sites, and no dump station for filling RV tanks directly, these spigots can be used to fill RV tanks with a hose.
- Clean Pit Toilets (Vault Toilets): The campground provides clean pit toilets, which are regularly maintained, offering essential restroom facilities.
- Fire Rings and Picnic Tables: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring with a grate, perfect for cooking and enjoying a campfire.
- Firewood Availability: A local man frequently comes around with reasonably priced firewood, or firewood can be purchased from several locations in downtown Bayfield, including grocery stores and gas stations.
- Trash Dumpsters: Several trash dumpsters are located throughout the campground for waste disposal.
- Pet-Friendly: Leashed dogs are welcomed at the campground.
- Stunning Lake Superior Views: The most prominent highlight is the absolutely beautiful campsites, particularly those in the lower road loop, that offer direct "lake view" and "great sunrise view" over Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands.
- Heavily Wooded & Private Sites: The campground is set in a deep, old forest of tall, shady trees, providing "heavily wooded private sites" that offer a secluded feel despite being part of a larger campground.
- Proximity to Bayfield: Located just "one mile north of Bayfield on State Highway 13," it offers an easy walk or bike ride into town for access to shops, restaurants, and the ferry to Madeline Island and Apostle Islands cruises.
- First-Come, First-Serve Advantage: This system allows for flexibility for last-minute trips, and sites often become available daily, especially if you arrive before late afternoon.
- Apostle Islands Lookout Points: The campground features designated lookout points with benches to view each of the Apostle Islands, enhancing the scenic experience.
- Reliable Electric Hookups: The availability of 20/30 amp electric service at most, if not all, sites is a significant convenience for modern campers.
- Local Firewood Delivery: The unique service of a local man selling reasonably priced firewood directly at the campground adds a touch of local charm and convenience.
- Access to Nearby Showers (off-site): While the campground itself has no showers, campers can utilize the shower facilities at the Bayfield Recreation Facility for a fee, offering a practical solution for longer stays.
- Suitable for Smaller Rigs & Tents: While some larger RVs can fit, the campground is particularly ideal for tents and smaller RVs (under 30 feet), providing a more rustic and intimate camping feel.

For Wisconsin locals, Dalrymple Park and Campground in Bayfield offers an exceptionally suitable and quintessential Northwoods camping experience, combining rustic charm with convenient access to one of the state's most beloved regions. Its suitability for residents stems from several key features that cater to the Wisconsin outdoor enthusiast.
Firstly, the "first-come, first-serve" policy, while requiring an early arrival during peak times, is a massive draw for locals who prefer spontaneous trips over months of advanced planning. This flexibility allows Wisconsinites to seize a beautiful weather window or simply decide on a last-minute escape to the stunning Lake Superior shoreline. Being able to secure a site on the day of arrival, often with a "great sunrise view" over Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands, is a highly valued aspect for those living within a reasonable driving distance.
The "absolutely beautiful campsite with electric hook up" provides a perfect balance of rustic charm and modern convenience. Locals can enjoy the serene, heavily wooded, and private sites while still having access to electricity for essential needs. The availability of clean pit toilets and easily accessible potable water spigots throughout the campground further enhances comfort, making the "no showers on-site" a minor inconvenience, especially with the option of showers at the Bayfield Recreation Facility just a short drive away.
Its unparalleled proximity to downtown Bayfield—just a mile away—is a significant advantage. This allows locals to easily explore the charming shops, diverse restaurants, and ferry services to Madeline Island and Apostle Islands cruises without having to pack up camp. It offers the best of both worlds: a peaceful forest retreat and the vibrancy of a popular lakeside town. The ease of acquiring "reasonably priced firewood" from a local vendor who comes right to the campground adds a touch of local authenticity and convenience that campers truly appreciate.
In essence, Dalrymple Park and Campground is a perfect fit for Wisconsin locals because it offers an authentic, accessible, and value-rich camping experience. It’s a place where residents can easily reconnect with the profound beauty of Lake Superior, enjoy classic camping amenities, and immerse themselves in the unique charm of Bayfield, all without the complexities of distant travel or restrictive reservation systems. It's a treasured local spot that provides genuine, memorable outdoor adventures.

Dalrymple Park and Campground Reviews
First come first serve! Absolutely beautiful campsite with electric hook up, lake view, private. Pit toilets that are clean , potable water nearby. A local man comes around with reasonably priced firewood. Great place to camp!
Jul 04, 2025 · Jill ConklinThis is a first come first serve campground. We were on a long road trip and had a need to change plans. This was a great last minute stop to pitch a tent. Great sunrise view. I went down the road to Washington Avenue beach to get a better view of the sunrise as well as a running water bathroom.
Jul 12, 2024 · Jordan MarshallThis particular campground is very hilly. We had drove in and since our RV is very low to the ground found it extremely difficult to navigate throughout. We almost damaged our rig. If you’re a renter, it’s okay. The area is beautiful and found a much better accommodations at Buffalo Bay Campground, which is just up the road, and part of the casino. They accept reservations. Good luck.
Aug 14, 2024 · Ken WOverall, our experience here was subpar. There are a handful of spots right off the lake if you were lucky enough to grab them. We got lucky by night two. Website says first come first serve; however, we arrived and many spots had reservations taped to the numbered pole. Very misleading. It’s very hilly, if I had an RV would not stay here. For us, it was a last minute stop so this worked. It was nice being so close to bayfield. It is right off the highway so you will hear highway noise.
Oct 14, 2024 · MollyWe enjoyed walk in site 28. As a tent camper it gets you away from RVs etc. It has a nice view of the lake with a trail down to it. Site 27 has less of a view. Site 26 has a great view and is where the walk in sites trail starts. Overall campground is simple in a nice way. $30 higher than most but we saw some walking into Bayfield for groceries etc.
