Had a great time camping, just me and the dogs, literally. There was one other site taken for 1 night. Otherwise all to ourselves. Amazing it was that way as the other campgrounds nearby I went to were packed. The sites are beautiful, some with lots of shade and some with sun. A hand operated well pump and vault toilet were the only amenities, other than a fire ring and picnic table. The lake and access are about 50 yards away with a trail through the woods. - Jason “Water Buffalo” Bouvette

This campground is ideal for the self-sufficient camper, the angler seeking undisturbed waters, or anyone longing for a quiet moment with just their thoughts and the sounds of the wilderness.

Location and Accessibility

Cottonwood Lake Campground is situated in Deer River, MN 56636, USA. This location places it firmly within the vast and beautiful landscape of Itasca County, an area renowned for its dense forests and countless lakes, forming the heart of Minnesota's Northwoods. While its precise coordinates within Deer River aren't listed as a street address, the general location within this region indicates it's accessible via well-maintained county and state roads.

The campground's appeal lies in its "out of the way" feel, suggesting it's not directly on a major thoroughfare, which contributes to its quiet atmosphere. Despite this, it remains accessible for car campers and smaller setups, allowing visitors to easily reach it for a serene escape. The proximity to Deer River means that while you're immersed in nature, you're never too far from basic supplies, gas, or other services if needed. The short "trail through the woods" to Cottonwood Lake ensures that the primary natural feature is always within easy reach. This balance of being somewhat secluded yet accessible makes Cottonwood Lake Campground a desirable spot for Minnesota locals who want to feel truly away from it all, without enduring an excessively long or difficult journey.

Services Offered
  • Rustic Campsites: Cottonwood Lake Campground offers a number of designated campsites designed for a primitive, back-to-basics camping experience. These sites are well-suited for tent camping and potentially smaller, self-contained RVs or vans.
  • No Hookups: It's important to note that this is a rustic campground with "no services" in terms of electric, water, or sewer hookups at the individual sites. Campers must be prepared to be self-sufficient.
  • Hand-Operated Well Pump: The campground provides a hand-operated well pump for water. While this is a source of water, campers should be aware that, as noted in a review, there might be instances where the pump is "broke" or not functioning, so bringing your own water or having a backup plan for filtration/treatment is advisable.
  • Vault Toilets: The only restroom amenity available is a vault toilet (commonly referred to as a "biffy" in Minnesota). These are non-flush toilets, typically maintained for cleanliness, as implied by the overall "clean campground" feedback.
  • Fire Rings and Picnic Tables: Each campsite is equipped with a fire ring for campfires and cooking, and a picnic table for outdoor dining, providing essential comforts for a traditional camping experience.
  • Direct Lake Access: A clear highlight is the "lake and access are about 50 yards away with a trail through the woods," offering convenient access to Cottonwood Lake for water activities.
  • Quiet and Uncrowded: A key "service" of this campground is the peace and quiet it offers. Visitors frequently note being "all to ourselves" and finding it "quiet no one else was there," making it ideal for those seeking solitude.
Features / Highlights
  • Secluded and Uncrowded Atmosphere: The most prominent feature is its remarkable solitude. Campers often find themselves with few to no neighbors, even when other nearby campgrounds are full. This provides an unparalleled sense of peace and privacy.
  • Direct Access to Cottonwood Lake: The campground's name reflects its primary natural asset. With the lake and its access just 50 yards away via a trail, it's perfect for fishing, paddling (kayaking, canoeing), or simply enjoying the serene waterside.
  • Beautiful Sites with Varied Shade: Reviewers praise the "beautiful" sites, noting options "with lots of shade and some with sun," allowing campers to choose a spot that best suits their preferences for light and warmth.
  • Rustic and Authentic Camping: For those who prefer a less commercialized experience, Cottonwood Lake Campground offers a genuine, back-to-basics feel, emphasizing simplicity and self-reliance.
  • Clean Campground: Despite its rustic nature, the campground is consistently described as "clean," ensuring a pleasant and well-maintained environment.
  • Excellent for Fishing: Given its direct lake access and the general reputation of Minnesota's Northwoods lakes, Cottonwood Lake likely offers good fishing opportunities, making it a draw for anglers.
  • Pet-Friendly (Implied): While not explicitly stated, the review mentioning "just me and the dogs" strongly suggests that pets are welcome, which is a significant feature for many campers. (Always confirm specific pet policies).
  • Budget-Friendly: Rustic campgrounds like Cottonwood Lake typically offer more affordable rates compared to full-service campgrounds, making it an economical choice for an outdoor escape.
