This article is designed to give you a comprehensive overview of Concho Lake Campground, helping you decide if it’s the right destination for your next adventure. We'll cover everything from its location and accessibility to the services and features that make it a standout choice for campers in the region.
Concho Lake Campground is situated in the high desert of Eastern Arizona, offering a unique blend of open sky and rugged terrain. It is easily accessible, located at C9R9+G6, Concho, AZ 85924, USA. This makes it a great stop for travelers exploring the vast and beautiful landscapes of the state, particularly those heading to or from the Petrified Forest National Park, which is a significant landmark in the area. The campground's location right on the lake adds to its appeal, providing stunning views and easy access to water-based activities. The drive to the campground is typically straightforward, with paved roads leading most of the way, making it accessible for a wide range of vehicles, including RVs and trailers.
While Concho Lake Campground prides itself on being a rustic and natural camping experience, it does provide some fundamental services to ensure a comfortable stay.
Public Restroom: A public restroom is available on-site, providing a convenience that not all free campsites offer.
Running Water: Access to running water is a key amenity, allowing campers to easily refill their water tanks or use it for cleaning.
Tent Sites: The campground is well-suited for tent camping, with various spots available for setting up your home away from home.
On-site Parking: Ample on-site parking is available, accommodating vehicles of all sizes, from cars to large RVs.
It is important to note that some of the amenities, particularly the restrooms and trash disposal, may be seasonal or not always available, as some visitors have noted. It is always a good practice to "pack in, pack out" and be prepared for a more primitive camping experience, bringing your own supplies.
Concho Lake Campground offers several features that make it a memorable place to stay. These highlights cater to a variety of campers, from families to those seeking a quiet retreat.
Good for Kids: The open space and lakeside location make it a safe and fun environment for children to explore and play.
Free Camping: One of the most significant features is that the campground is free to use, making it an excellent option for budget-conscious travelers.
Concrete Slabs: Some areas of the campground have concrete slabs, providing a flat and stable surface for setting up tents, RVs, or other camping equipment.
Lakeside Convenience: The campground's location directly on Concho Lake offers beautiful views and opportunities for fishing, kayaking, or simply enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.
Boondocking Friendly: For RVers and those who enjoy off-grid camping, the site is known as a good boondocking spot, offering a simple and accessible place to stay the night.
7-Day Limit: The 7-day limit ensures a healthy turnover of campers, keeping the spots available and preventing overuse, maintaining the site's natural appeal.
For those who need to get in touch or find their way, here is the essential contact information. Please note that as a free, public campground, there may not be a staffed office or direct phone number for inquiries.

When considering your camping options in Arizona, Concho Lake Campground stands out for several compelling reasons. It is more than just a place to sleep; it’s a strategic and enjoyable stop on your Arizona journey. Its status as a free campground is, of course, a major draw, providing a no-cost alternative to more expensive state or national park campgrounds. This makes it an ideal choice for travelers on a tight budget or those who are just looking for a simple overnight stay without the fuss.
Furthermore, its location is a key benefit. Situated between major attractions like the Petrified Forest National Park and the White Mountains, it serves as a perfect base camp or a convenient stopover. The ease of access, combined with the scenic lakeside setting, makes it an attractive option for a quick escape or a planned part of a longer road trip. The availability of on-site parking and concrete slabs simplifies the setup process for both tent and RV campers, taking some of the stress out of finding a level spot.
The peaceful, rustic environment, as noted by visitors, offers a stark contrast to the busy, crowded atmosphere of some paid campgrounds. It's a place where you can truly get some rest, enjoy the quiet, and take in the natural beauty of the Arizona high desert. While it's important to be self-sufficient and prepared for a more primitive experience, the basic amenities like running water and a public restroom are valuable additions that set it apart from truly undeveloped boondocking sites. In conclusion, Concho Lake Campground is a fantastic choice for anyone who values convenience, natural beauty, and a no-frills, free camping experience in the heart of Arizona.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Convenient campsite on the lake. 7 day limit. Free! Concrete slabs for flat setup. Currently stage 2 fire restriction. Pack in pack out. No trash or toilets. Nice boondocker spot. Good place to get some rest traveling between petrified national forest
July 13 · Toby PachecoIf all you need is a place for the night along your way this is as easy and pleasant as it gets. This time of year park wherever. No toilets (maybe too early in the year to put out.
April 15 · Clyde AndrewsCamped here for a couple nights and it was a quiet place. Easy, right off the main road. Towed the 5th wheel camper in here no problem. Even a few concrete pads to level out our camper. There's no hook ups or services in the campground. More of primitive type camping but good enough for us 😊 Only complaint is; wish the porta potties were tended to and a bit cleaner. The gas station across the road has basic supplies but no public restroom. The family dollar up the road does have a restroom. Had full service of 5G on our devices. Will stay here for a few days again if we have to.
January 23 · Alan RathArrived around 9 PM and drove straight in, parked on one of the pads, and car camped. It was super private aka like only two other cars/RVs in the place. There’s a fire pit, and there were two port-a-potties. The doors for the port-a-potties were wide open tho so we didn’t use them. Not sure what their condition is. The lake is super low, but there were still ducks! Great place to camp, then go to Petrified Forest. Great dispersed camping.Had great service, we even watched a movie!! The gas station on the other side of the main road has no public restrooms.
November 27 · Mary Anderson-BarnesThe restaurant and employees are amazing. The camp grounds horrible. I even asked owners mom for cleaning items to clean the bathroom and shower for women. Campers brought me thank you cards for doing it. I wasn't going to use it before it was cleaned. The camp grounds are not taken care of at all. We didn't have a griu or fire pit.
