Colonial Creek North Campground

North Cascade Lakes National Scenic Byway, Rockport, WA 98283, USA

4.0
We were somehow lucky enough to lock in 2 nights at the end of August 2024. The campsites were exactly what we were looking for. These are very spacious spots that are far enough away from neighbors that it feels private. The downside is that there were no campfires allowed. Everything was damp, and the weather was chilly. It didn't make much sense to now allow campfires. I understand it was due to the fires in the nearby area, but literally everything was soaking wet at our campsite. When the weather was calm, the lake was as smooth as glass. Once the rain storm was heading in, the water was choppy (shown in photos). - Kristen Miller

Colonial Creek North Campground Introduce

For many residents of Washington State, the call to adventure leads directly to the majestic North Cascades, a region renowned for its jagged peaks, pristine forests, and striking turquoise-colored lakes. Among the cherished camping destinations within this spectacular landscape is Colonial Creek North Campground. Nestled on the shores of the iconic Diablo Lake, this campground offers a quintessential Pacific Northwest outdoor experience, perfectly blending accessibility with opportunities for deep immersion in nature. This article is crafted to provide local Washington users with a clear, engaging, and factual overview of what makes Colonial Creek North Campground an ideal choice for their next camping adventure in the heart of our beautiful state.

Colonial Creek North Campground is part of the larger Colonial Creek Campground complex, which is divided into North and South sections. While both offer fantastic camping, the North section is particularly appreciated for its often more spacious and private sites, as noted by visitors. It's a place where the vibrant, almost surreal, blue-green waters of Diablo Lake meet the ancient, shaded old-growth forest, creating a truly serene backdrop for your outdoor getaway. Whether you're an avid hiker, a keen kayaker, or simply someone looking to relax and soak in the stunning scenery, Colonial Creek North provides a memorable base camp. We understand that securing a spot at popular Washington campgrounds can be a challenge, often requiring reservations well in advance, and Colonial Creek North is no exception to its popularity among locals seeking beauty and tranquility.

Colonial Creek North Campground is specifically located on the North Cascade Lakes National Scenic Byway (State Route 20), near Rockport, WA 98283, USA. More precisely, it’s situated on the north side of State Route 20 near mile marker 130, close to the community of Diablo. This strategic placement within the North Cascades National Park Complex makes it a prime location for exploring the region's vast natural wonders.

Accessibility to Colonial Creek North Campground is generally straightforward via State Route 20, also known as the North Cascades Highway. For those traveling from Western Washington, the scenic drive typically involves heading east on SR 20. The campground is approximately 19 miles east of Marblemount, a key community for services before entering the more remote park areas. While the main road, SR 20, runs nearby and some traffic noise might be audible during the day, it becomes "fairly quiet though" at night, as noted by visitors. It’s important to remember that the North Cascades Highway is typically closed during the winter months due to heavy snowfall, usually from late fall to late spring (roughly November through April/May). Therefore, checking the National Park Service website and Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) for current road conditions and opening dates is crucial for planning your trip. Despite its remote feel, the well-maintained highway ensures relatively easy access for a national park campground of this caliber, making it a convenient destination for Washington residents seeking a deep dive into mountain and lake recreation.

Colonial Creek North Campground offers essential services and facilities designed to provide a comfortable and traditional camping experience within a stunning natural setting:

  • Individual Campsites: The campground features 41 campsites, primarily standard nonelectric sites, suitable for both tent camping and smaller RVs/trailers (RV/trailer maximum length typically around 25-35 feet, varying by site). Some are tent-only or walk-in sites.

  • Spacious and Private Sites: Many campsites are described as "very spacious spots that are far enough away from neighbors that it feels private," a highly valued feature for campers.

  • Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table for outdoor dining and a fire ring (often with a grate) for campfires and cooking. (Note: Fire bans are common in the dry summer months due to regional fire activity, so always check current restrictions.)

  • Flush Toilets: Clean and well-maintained flush toilets are available, offering a significant comfort upgrade from pit toilets.

  • Potable Drinking Water: Faucets providing potable drinking water are available throughout the campground, ensuring access to safe water.

  • Bear Boxes: Bear-resistant food storage lockers are often provided at campsites, crucial for safely storing food and scented items given that "bears do inhabit the area." Campers should always utilize these.

  • Garbage Removal: Trash collection services are available, encouraging responsible waste disposal.

  • No Showers or Hookups: It's important to note that the campground does not offer showers or electrical/water/sewer hookups for RVs, aligning with a more rustic national park camping experience.

  • Reservations: Reservations are highly recommended and can be made through Recreation.gov, often needing to be booked "6 months in advance as soon as it became available online" due to high demand.

Colonial Creek North Campground is celebrated for its remarkable features and highlights that draw campers from across Washington and beyond:

  • Stunning Diablo Lake Access: The campground is situated directly on the shores of Diablo Lake, famous for its mesmerizing turquoise, glacier-fed waters. Many campsites offer direct or very easy access to the lake, making it ideal for kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, and fishing. The lake can be "as smooth as glass" on calm days, offering incredible reflections.

  • Gateway to Iconic Hiking Trails: The campground serves as a primary trailhead for several popular hikes. The Thunder Knob Trail, an easy 3.4-mile round trip with rewarding views of Diablo Lake, starts directly across from the North Campground. Additionally, the Thunder Creek Trail, leading into deeper wilderness, is also easily accessible.

  • Old-Growth Forest Setting: Nestled within a thick forest of Douglas firs, western redcedars, and western hemlocks, the campground offers abundant shade and the soothing sounds of nearby Colonial Creek, enhancing the natural immersion.

  • Wildlife Viewing Opportunities: The North Cascades are rich in wildlife. Campers might spot deer, black bears (hence the bear boxes), and a variety of bird species, adding an exciting dimension to the outdoor experience.

  • Proximity to North Cascades Attractions: From the campground, visitors are a short drive from other significant park overlooks and features, including Ross Lake Overlook, Gorge Lake, and the North Cascades Visitor Center in Newhalem, which offers interpretive programs during peak season. A popular day trip for many is to continue east on SR 20 for a visit to the charming town of Winthrop.

  • Minimal Light Pollution for Stargazing: As there is "no cell service" and minimal development, the night sky at Colonial Creek North can offer excellent stargazing opportunities, a cherished experience for many.

  • Varied Site Experiences: While some sites are very private, others, particularly those closer to the water, might be "very close to each other." This variety allows campers to choose based on their preference for seclusion versus proximity to the lake.
