Cobble Rock Campground Introduce
Hey there, fellow Oregonians! If you're searching for that truly peaceful escape where the sounds of the city are replaced by the gentle rush of a river and the whispers of the wind through Ponderosa pines, then Cobble Rock Campground is a destination you absolutely need to explore. Nestled along the scenic Crooked River Highway near Prineville, this BLM (Bureau of Land Management) campground offers a serene, off-grid experience that’s perfect for disconnecting and immersing yourself in Central Oregon's stunning high desert landscape.
Cobble Rock Campground is renowned for its quiet atmosphere, a welcome respite from the bustling pace of everyday life. As one happy camper shared, "This place was great, it was nice and quiet." It's the kind of spot where you can truly unwind, whether you're fly fishing the Crooked River, enjoying a campfire under the stars, or simply soaking in the breathtaking cliff views. While it's a "first-come, first-serve" campground, securing a riverside spot, like the popular Campsite #9 mentioned by a reviewer, offers "great views away from the road so it was nice and quiet."
This sprawling 4.4-acre campground offers year-round camping, a testament to Central Oregon's diverse weather, which can include "nice warm sun" one day and a surprising "4" of wet snow" the next, as experienced by a recent visitor. This adds to the adventurous spirit of Cobble Rock, where every trip can offer a unique experience of the elements. Despite the occasional challenge of nature's surprises, the core appeal remains its undeveloped charm and the raw beauty of its surroundings.
It’s important to note that Cobble Rock offers a primitive camping experience, embracing the "off-grid" ethos. This means no potable water and no power, encouraging campers to be self-sufficient and fully embrace the wilderness. For many Oregon locals, this is precisely the draw – a chance to get back to basics and truly appreciate the quiet solitude of our state's incredible outdoors. The emphasis here is on respecting nature and enjoying the simple pleasures of camping, surrounded by majestic Ponderosa pine trees and the ever-present Crooked Wild and Scenic River.
Cobble Rock Campground is located on the Crooked River Highway in Prineville, OR 97754, USA. This places it within the heart of Central Oregon's high desert, specifically along the Lower Crooked Back Country Byway.
For Oregonians, particularly those in the Willamette Valley or around Bend, Prineville is a well-known gateway to a wealth of outdoor recreation. The drive to Cobble Rock from major population centers like Portland, Salem, or Eugene typically involves heading east over the Cascade mountains, a scenic journey that showcases the dramatic transition from lush forests to the expansive, rugged beauty of the high desert. From Bend, Prineville is a relatively short drive, making Cobble Rock a convenient option for a quick weekend escape.
Once in the Prineville area, access to Cobble Rock Campground is via the Crooked River Highway. This road, part of the Crooked River Canyon Scenic Bikeway, winds along the river, offering picturesque views. While the campground is "near the road," some sites are "a little sheltered from the wind," and the overall quiet atmosphere suggests it's sufficiently set back to offer a tranquil experience.
As a first-come, first-served campground open year-round, planning your arrival can be key, especially during peak seasons when the "campground fills up quickly in the summer months." However, it's "fairly open in the fall/winter," providing opportunities for more solitary visits. Keep in mind that while Cobble Rock is remote, potable water is available at the nearby Chimney Rock Campground, just one mile north on State Highway 27, which is a helpful tip for planning your water supply. The lack of cell phone service in the campground further emphasizes its remote nature, encouraging a true digital detox.
Services Offered:
- Fourteen primitive campsites (first-come, first-served; no reservations)
- Vault toilets
- Picnic tables at each site
- Fire rings at each site (check for current fire restrictions)
- No potable water on site (available nearby at Chimney Rock Campground)
- No power hookups
- No sewage dump
- Trash receptacles (garbage pick-up available)
- Some campsites with riverside access
- Some campsites with shading beneath large Ponderosa pine trees

Cobble Rock Campground Reviews
This place was great, it was nice and quiet. It is first come first serve. We stayed in campsite #9 right by the water with great views away from the road so it was nice and quiet. Biggest complaint is there's only one bathroom in our loop, it is really dusty in all the campsites and there are tons of yellow jackets buzzing around!
May 30, 2017 · JoeyEnjoyed the campground for 3 days this weekend. We enjoyed the nice warm sun, woke up to 4" of wet snow, enjoyed a nice Blizzard. Plenty of cliff views. Good campsites and restroom facility.
Mar 19, 2018 · Brandon “Slixtersix”Great scenery/wildlife. Was great fishing until elitist made it fly fishing only a couple years ago. Kids used to fish now if you dare to bring 5-10 year olds they have to flail fly rods...
Nov 21, 2017 · Jim EklemAwesome place to camp. The sound of the river put us to sleep and the stars were magical. $8.00 to camp no water. Outhouse was decent. People were fly fishing. Awesome spot
