Clackamas Lake Campground offers a range of services designed to facilitate a rustic yet comfortable camping experience. While it emphasizes a natural setting, it provides essential amenities to meet basic needs for its campers.
- Campsites Available: The campground offers individual campsites suitable for various camping setups, including tents and potentially smaller RVs, though specific hookups are not mentioned.
- Pit Toilets (Bathrooms): Restroom facilities are available in the form of pit toilets. These facilities are noted by visitors for being very clean and well-maintained, contributing to a more pleasant experience.
- Camp Host Presence: A camp host is typically on-site, serving as a point of contact for campers, offering assistance, and overseeing campground operations. Their friendliness has been a highlight for visitors.
- Potable Water (Intermittent Availability): While water spigots are present for potable water, their functionality can be intermittent due to technical issues (e.g., bad fuses), so it's advisable to check current conditions or bring backup water.
- Mixed Reservation System: The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis on Wednesdays, transitioning to a reservation system for the rest of the week. This mixed system requires careful planning by campers.
- Access to Quiet and Seclusion: One of the primary 'services' is the provision of a quiet and secluded environment, often with very few other campers, making it ideal for those seeking peace.
Clackamas Lake Campground offers several unique features and highlights that draw visitors seeking a particular kind of outdoor experience. Understanding these aspects is key to appreciating what makes this campground distinctive.
- Exceptional Peace and Quiet: A major highlight is the remarkable tranquility. Due to often low occupancy, especially during weekdays, the campground provides an unparalleled level of peace, making it perfect for relaxation and getting away from noise.
- Friendly Camp Host: The presence of a very friendly and helpful camp host significantly enhances the visitor experience, providing a welcoming atmosphere and support.
- Clean Restroom Facilities: Despite being pit toilets, the bathrooms are consistently noted for their cleanliness and maintenance, which is a significant positive for campers.
- Rustic Camping Experience: For those who appreciate a more traditional and less developed camping environment, the lack of extensive amenities like showers or consistent running water at all spigots contributes to a genuine outdoor feel.
- Proximity to Timothy Lake (with Fee): While not directly on Timothy Lake, the campground is close enough to offer access to its popular recreational opportunities, though a separate day-use fee (run by PGE) is required to access the lake. This allows for diverse activities nearby, including paddle sports and fishing.
- Mosquitoes are Part of the Experience: Visitors should be aware that mosquitoes are a prominent feature of the environment, especially during certain seasons. This is typical of forest camping in the region and an expected part of being "on their turf."
- Mixed Reservation System Dynamics: The combination of first-come, first-served (Wednesdays) and reservation-based camping (rest of the week) creates a unique dynamic. While it offers flexibility for some, it can also lead to challenges with site claiming and clarity, requiring campers to be proactive and informed.
- Potential for Dispersed Camping Access: For the truly adventurous, there's the possibility to explore dispersed campsites on the west side of Timothy Lake, potentially involving paddling in, offering an even more secluded experience.

Clackamas Lake Campground, with its serene atmosphere and deep integration into the Oregon wilderness, is particularly suitable for locals who truly appreciate a quiet, unpretentious camping experience. For Oregonians seeking to genuinely disconnect from urban life, this campground offers a rare commodity: profound peace and solitude. Unlike more developed or crowded sites, you're often likely to find yourself with very few other campers, especially on weekdays, allowing for an immersive natural experience that is increasingly hard to find. We, as locals, understand that mosquitoes are simply a part of enjoying our beautiful forests, and the trade-off for such tranquility is well worth it.
The clean, albeit rustic, pit toilets demonstrate a commitment to maintaining basic hygiene even in a wild setting, which is a significant plus for many campers, particularly families. The proximity to Timothy Lake, with its recreational opportunities, adds another layer of appeal, allowing for varied activities within a short distance, assuming one accounts for the day-use fee. Clackamas Lake Campground isn't about luxury; it's about authenticity, quiet reflection, and the simple joy of being present in Oregon's magnificent natural environment. Clackamas Lake Campground Reviews
Camped here for a few days to get away. Aside from the host--who was very friendly--there was only one other camper in the whole place, which made for peace and quiet. Yep, the mosquitoes are out for blood, but that's what they do, and we are on their turf. I have camped at Timothy Lake for years, but the reservation system and increase in wingnuts has made it difficult for me to return. The bathroom nearest my site was very clean.
Jun 10, 2025 · Christopher HelmickTLDR: The campground is lovely, but squatters, night owls, and PGE might win at your expense. With a first come first serve system on Wednesdays but a reservation system for the rest of the week, you’re already asking for issues. Add vague instructions on the main signage, an inattentive camp host, and a begrudging camper who refuses to move out of a site that was already reserved — thankfully not the site I reserved, but sadly the one right next to us — and you’ve ruined the innocent peoples trip who had the reservation but had to wait hours for the camp host to show up just to have to find another campground (or go home?) anyway… I think the crux of this issue (and the squatters excuse) is that they showed up before the night’s reservations were posted and there’s no clear indication on the signs of what time you can plan on that being done / claiming a site. Also, that phone number for reservations is apparently not working either…We stayed Wed-Sun. The first night was peaceful, but after that it got crowded. One of the nights our other neighbors played music and talked loudly until 3am. Again, I think the camp host / management company (a division of California land management…?) didn’t seem to be around for more than 45min during the day to post reservations and did not stay the night and thus didn’t enforce any of the quiet hours. And none of the spigots were working the first two days we were there (and apparently the week before as well), but the camp host said it was a bad fuse. Finally, if you’re planning to visit Timothy Lake, you’ll also need to pay the $10 day use fee every day you want to be over there, because PGE runs everything over there — probably penance for putting up the dam.If I could do it over again, I’d try to get one of the dispersed campsites on the west side of Timothy lake and paddle into it.
Aug 17, 2022 · Adam BoyceLocated in the Clackamas Lake Historical district that includes restored buildings of around 100 years ago including a ranger station and a rangers cabin that is normally available for rent. Maybe next year? Campground has approximately 46 sites. Several vault toilets are available. Same with trash dumpsters. Nice campground.
Jun 18, 2021 · Jim HammitGreat campground for equestrians. Nice riding right out of camp. Camp was clean and host on site.
Aug 18, 2024 · Deb BinionHidden gem for camping in the Mt Hood national forest. Fair cost, clean campground and very well run. Bathrooms are well maintained, camp sites are secluded and private. If you need a quick getaway from the stressful city life, Clackamas Lake is only 90 minutes away from the Portland area. A nice day drive to Timothy Lake is also a great choice.
