- Campsites with and without hookups: The campground offers a variety of site types to accommodate different camping preferences. While some sites provide full hookups suitable for RVs, there are also "no hookup" sites primarily designed for tent campers or smaller RVs that are self-sufficient. Availability for these sites can vary significantly, with hookup sites often being more popular and booking up well in advance.
- Restroom facilities: Restrooms are available for campers. However, it's worth noting that some facilities, such as sinks, may occasionally experience maintenance issues like clogs, as reported by previous visitors.
- Showers: Showers are provided for campers' convenience. Please be aware that these showers typically operate on a pay-per-use system, requiring a credit card payment for a nominal fee, such as $1.50 per use.
- Access to Cherry Creek State Park amenities: As part of Cherry Creek State Park, campers have access to the wider park's extensive offerings. This includes access to Cherry Creek Lake for various water activities (though water quality can vary and some areas near the dam/swim beach have been described as unappealing for swimming by some visitors), numerous trails for hiking and biking, and open spaces for picnics and recreation.
- Water conservation fee: In addition to standard camping fees and a Colorado Park Pass, visitors should anticipate an additional charge for a water conservation fee, which contributes to the park's sustainability efforts.
- Proximity to urban amenities: While offering an outdoor experience, the campground's location near Aurora means campers are never far from essential services, grocery stores, restaurants, and other urban conveniences, providing a comfortable blend of nature and modern living.
- Conveniently located near Denver: This is arguably one of the most significant advantages of Cherry Creek State Park Campground. Its close proximity to Denver and Aurora means less travel time and more time enjoying the outdoors. This makes it an ideal choice for quick getaways or for those who prefer not to venture too far from the city.
- Spacious and comfortable campsites: Many visitors highlight the generous size and comfort of the campsites. While "no hookup" sites might be narrower in some instances, generally, the sites are designed to offer a pleasant and accommodating experience for both RV and tent campers. The layout often allows for a degree of privacy, even within a popular state park setting.
- High popularity, especially on weekends: The campground’s appeal is evident in its high booking rate. It frequently gets fully booked, particularly on weekends, which speaks volumes about its desirability among local outdoor enthusiasts. This popularity is a testament to its quality and the enjoyable experiences it provides.
- Access to Cherry Creek Lake and recreational activities: Campers have direct access to Cherry Creek Lake, a central feature of the park. This opens up a wide array of recreational opportunities including boating, paddleboarding, fishing, and access to a swim beach (though potential concerns about water quality near the dam and swim beach have been noted by some visitors). The surrounding park also offers extensive trails for hiking, biking, and birdwatching, ensuring there’s always something to do.
- Natural setting within an urban environment: One of the most unique aspects is the ability to enjoy a natural, outdoor camping experience while still being within an urban environment. This offers the best of both worlds: the peace and quiet of nature combined with the convenience of nearby city amenities.
- Family-friendly atmosphere: The campground often attracts families, and it’s common to see children enjoying the outdoors. This contributes to a lively, family-friendly atmosphere, especially in the no-hookup sections where tent camping is prevalent.

Cherry Creek State Park, Aurora, CO 80015 Reviews
We booked 3 months in advance and could only get a no hookups site and it was 28 per day. The showers cost money and the no hookup campground was basically where the tents are. There were kids all over, screaming. We haven't stayed in the full hookup and maybe it's better but as of now Chatfield state park is much better. They also charge extra in addition to camping fee and the Colorado park pass you have to pay some water conservation fee. $28 seemed a lot for a site with no amenities. The site was barely wide enough for our rv and had trees on both sides. We put the tree in between the 2 slides. Not overly impressed. Just went to the lake by the dam and the swim beach. It was really gross. I would not swim in it.
Jun 18, 2025 · Carrie ButlerThis state park campground is conveniently located near Denver and offers great accessibility. The campsites are spacious and comfortable, which makes for a pleasant stay. It’s so popular that it gets fully booked every weekend. That said, the constant noise from street racers at night was a downside. The sink was clogged and unusable, and showers require a credit card payment of $1.50. Overall, I’d give a better rating to Chatfield State Park.
May 12, 2025 · JAY HWANG• Great campground for enjoying nature while still having close access to the city. It's located right across the road from the reservoir/beach with direct access to miles of trails for walking, running, biking, etc. and nice views of the surrounding mountains or grasslands.• Daily park admission is *not* included with your campsite, it is a separate fee. If you are staying 8+ days, just buy an annual pass.• In addition to the campground fee and park admission fee, there is also a separate Cherry Creek Water Basin daily fee. If you're staying 3+ days, just pay the annual fee.• Campsites are fairly flat with enough room to have some privacy. I believe each one is assigned its own magpie :) Sites are close enough to the road to hear traffic throughout the day.• Paid showers ($1.50 for 5 minutes, credit card only) are available and are cleaned twice a day.• Paid laundry (starting at $1.50 a load, quarters only) is also available. Coin machine is permanently out of service, so you'll need to bring your own and washers/dryers are limited so don't go at checkout time like everyone else unless you want to wait.• Each time we have stayed the campground has been relatively quiet, but it is very popular so I highly recommend booking in advance (especially for longer stays or during peak season)!
