Albright is a small town in Preston County, West Virginia, a region characterized by its rolling hills, dense forests, and vibrant outdoor recreation scene.
For West Virginia locals, accessing Cheat Canyon Campground is generally straightforward. Cheat Canyon Campground focuses on providing essential services that cater to a rustic yet functional camping experience, particularly appealing to those who prioritize river access and outdoor adventure. Based on customer reviews, the services offered include:
Spacious Campsites: Guests note that the campground offers "tons of space," suggesting ample room between sites, allowing for a more private and comfortable camping experience for both tents and potentially smaller RVs/vans. While specific hookup details aren't provided, the focus on a rustic experience suggests a predominance of primitive or dry camping sites.
Direct River Access ("Put-In"): A major service highlight is the ability to "put-in (on the river) right from our campsite." This direct access to the Cheat River is invaluable for kayakers, rafters, and those looking to enjoy the water without needing to drive to a separate access point.
Clean and Stocked Porta-Potties: Despite being portable toilets, reviewers specifically praise that the porta-potties are "kept clean and stocked with good quality toilet paper." This attention to basic hygiene is highly appreciated by campers.
Functional Bathrooms (with TLC potential): The campground also provides more traditional bathroom facilities. While one review noted they "could use a little TLC," they were described as "functioned properly and were 10x better than using a port-a-john," indicating they offer a more comfortable option than basic portable units. Hot water is implied by the preference over porta-potties, but not explicitly stated.
Trash Disposal: The provision of "a large dumpster for trash" during events like Chest Fest (and likely for general use) ensures convenient waste disposal, helping to maintain the cleanliness of the grounds.
Fire Pits: While not explicitly mentioned in the provided reviews, it's a standard offering for most campgrounds, allowing campers to have campfires for cooking and warmth. It's expected sites would have designated fire areas.
Picnic Tables: Also a standard campground amenity, likely available at each site for dining and activities.
Friendly Host Presence: The presence of a "friendly host" like Phil, who is accommodating and makes guests feel welcome, is an invaluable service, offering a personalized touch and immediate assistance for any issues.
Pet-Friendly Environment: The mention of the host's "cute dogs" and the generally accommodating nature suggests a pet-friendly policy, allowing campers to bring their furry companions along.
Cheat Canyon Campground offers several key features and highlights that make it a compelling choice for outdoor enthusiasts in West Virginia:
Unbeatable River Access: The most prominent highlight is the direct "put-in" access to the Cheat River right from the campsites. This is incredibly convenient for whitewater rafters, kayakers, and anglers, allowing them to easily launch their adventures onto the famous Cheat Canyon and Narrows. This eliminates the hassle of shuttling and makes the river highly accessible.
Spacious Campsites: Guests consistently note the "tons of space" available at the campground. This means less crowded sites, more privacy, and ample room for setting up camp comfortably, enhancing the overall outdoor experience.
Friendly and Accommodating Host: The presence of a "friendly host" like Phil, who is described as accommodating and whose dogs are "cute," contributes significantly to the welcoming atmosphere. This personalized touch and helpfulness can make a big difference in a camper's experience.
"Nice Mountain" Views and Pretty Trees: The campground is set against a backdrop of scenic "mountain" views and boasts attractive trees on the property, providing a picturesque and enjoyable natural environment for relaxation and photography.
Functional and Maintained Restrooms: While acknowledging room for "TLC," the fact that the bathrooms "functioned properly" and were "10x better than using a port-a-john" is a significant highlight for a rustic campground. The specific praise for clean and well-stocked porta-potties during a major event like Chest Fest further underscores a commitment to essential hygiene.
Convenient Location for Cheat River Adventures: The campground's strategic position makes it an ideal base for exploring the famous Cheat Canyon for whitewater rafting, kayaking, and hiking opportunities in the surrounding area.
Opportunity for Unplugging: While not explicitly stated as having no reception, the focus on a rustic experience and adventure often implies limited connectivity, appealing to those who wish to disconnect from digital distractions.
Pet-Friendly Environment: The mention of the host's dogs and the generally welcoming nature suggests that the campground is a great spot to bring your own furry companions for an outdoor adventure.
As a smaller, more rustic campground often catering to a specific niche (whitewater enthusiasts, those seeking direct river access), Cheat Canyon Campground typically focuses on consistent, competitive pricing for its unique offerings rather than extensive, publicly advertised promotions in the traditional sense. The inherent "special offer" often lies in its prime location and convenient river access.
The provided reviews do not indicate any specific ongoing discounts, seasonal sales, or bundled packages. Pricing for such campgrounds is usually straightforward, based on nightly rates per site. Any specific deals, such as those for extended stays, group bookings (especially for rafting or kayaking groups), or off-peak periods, would most likely be communicated directly by the campground host or during the booking inquiry.
However, the value proposition of Cheat Canyon Campground is its direct, hassle-free access to the Cheat River, ample space, and the welcoming environment provided by the host, which can be seen as a continuous "special offer" for adventurers. It's often the convenience and unique features that draw visitors, rather than discounted rates.
For the most accurate and up-to-date information on pricing, availability, and any potential specific arrangements, it is highly recommended that interested West Virginia locals contact Cheat Canyon Campground directly via phone. The friendly host would be the best resource for any current offerings or booking details.
To plan your adventure at Cheat Canyon Campground or to inquire about availability and specific amenities, direct contact with the friendly host is the most effective approach. Given the nature of this campground, phone calls are likely the best method for obtaining the most current information.

This direct communication will allow you to confirm site availability, discuss any specific needs (like RV size accommodation), and get up-to-date information on river conditions or local insights. Cheat Canyon Campground Reviews
Amazing campground with tons of space. They kept the porta pots clean and stocked with good quality toilet paper. They also provided a large dumpster for trash during Chest Fest. Amazing place to stay.
May 05, 2025 · Nick MurrayThis is a small campground, but was very convenient for the Cheat Canyon and Narrows. Phil is a friendly host and his dogs are cute! He allowed us to put-in (on the river) right from our campsite. There's a nice "mountain" view and the trees on the property are pretty. The bathrooms could use a little TLC, but they functioned properly and were 10x better than using a port-a-john. We will definitely stay here again if we are back in the area.
Aug 14, 2020 · Janna BianculliAmazing rate of $5 a night per person. I love going down there and having a riverside access/woodsy site! Being an R1 boater, I don't like long carries to the river and this is so close that I'm happy. Just don't forget to bring quarters for the shower facility which is nice and clean. The hot water works well too. The owners are super friendly. Can't wait to go back!
Sep 06, 2018 · Erie Creek Rafter JanickiVery large and spacious campground located on West Virginia's Cheat River. Quiet and plenty of room to stretch out. Amazingly, the campground actually has cellular coverage (T-mobile). The price as of 2020 was $5 a head - - hard to beat. Yes, it's a substantial drive from I-68 but worth it!
Aug 30, 2020 · Bill ClugstonGreat and inexpensive place to camp - convenient to Cheat River Outfitters white water rafting company (great rafting company by the way). I just finished doing a white water rafting trip with Cheat River Outfitters up the road about 1/2 mile and wanted a place to stay over for the night. Turned out to be a great place. I tent camped for $5 !! How can you beat that? Also nice are the hot showers (pay showers for 1$ but nice and hot) for cleaning up after a rafting trip. There is a nice wide field to camp and also some camp spots down in the tree line near the river for a quite and private spot. the sites have a fire ring and newer picnic tables. the day i was there, there was only me. during the week i imagine it will always be quite. It would be a nice place if you want privacy and not many loud people/campers/RVs. There are showers in the main building and flush toilets. I would have given it 5 stars if the bathrooms were a little more cleaned up - like a few spider webs. ..lthough at 5$ you aren't getting a Holiday Inn spa. Also you do get some road noise from rt26 from crazy truck/rude truck drivers using their engine breaks. but if you are near the river the rushing water blocks out the noise pretty well. It is about 4 minutes down the road from Cheat River Outfitters. Go South on rt26 to Kingwood about a 10 minute drive to find a supermarket, Chinese Buffet, Catholic Church (St Sebastian 10:30 AM Sunday Mass), and a few stores. i would highly recommend this place if you want a very cheap, flush toilet, hot shower, low key, nice camp site, few people palce to camp. Also - a real nice treat up the road about 1-2 miles north on rt26..check out the old blast furnace site ( small road side sign marking the spot) then walk up stream ~20 yds feet - the best coolest water fall cascades that will surprise you.
