We made reservations online for a Monday through Wednesday stay. We arrived about 5 PM, and there were no instructions, no workers, and no information about hosts. When we looked at the sites we had reserved. They did not match the descriptions and were too small for one of our rigs. Since the place was completely empty (And based on our search the previous night, None of the other sites were reserved) We picked another site that was suitable for a larger rig.We tried to contact reservation.gov, but because there was no cell phone service within the campground, We had to go in a car outside of the campground to make a phone call to reservation.gov. Unfortunately, we couldn’t reach anyone to change our site number, but we sure did try. It would’ve been nice if there was a host available to work this out. But they were nowhere in sightTwo hours later, after getting set up and ready for dinner, the hosts finally show up and tell us we have to move because someone might decide to make a reservation in the middle of the night. This was ridiculous and Unreasonable, and the hosts started Shouting down anything we were trying to say. We were then told if we stayed in these sites they would call law-enforcement on us, and they drove off.Since there was absolutely no cell phone coverage, we decided to pack up our sites and move on to Cracker Barrel down the road. (which ended up being nicer and more level). The people at reservation.gov were very nice and gave us partial refund, but I want to make sure others don’t have to deal with the same idiocy that we had to deal with. On top of not being available to make sure we were able to set up, the two sites that we had reserved were not even marked as being reserved. Plus, there was a wasps nest in the electrical box, so obviously no one had done any checking on the equipment in recent days?I would not recommend this location unless you’re someone who’s willing to rough it, and feels safe without having any kind of emergency access or competent host To handle any situation that might occur. It’s a shame Because the location has a lot of potential. - Kathy Saint

Charlton Recreation Area Introduce

For Arkansans seeking a rejuvenating escape into nature, Charlton Recreation Area in Royal stands as a beloved and often-revisited destination within the sprawling Ouachita National Forest. This picturesque campground offers a unique blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and a truly refreshing environment, making it a highly attractive choice for families, hikers, and anyone looking to cool off during the warmer months in the Natural State.

Charlton Recreation Area is particularly renowned for its spring-fed Walnut Creek. This isn't just any creek; it’s famous for having some of the coldest, cleanest swimming water in Arkansas, providing an ideal respite from the summer heat. The iconic stone dam, originally constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s, creates a picturesque swimming area that has been a favorite for generations of Arkansans. Beyond its inviting waters, the campground itself is nestled in a shaded valley, offering a peaceful and well-maintained setting with generally good spacing between sites, promoting a sense of privacy and tranquility.

While reviews sometimes mention the absence of readily available hosts or challenges with cell service, the consistent praise for the beautiful location, clean facilities, and the unique swimming opportunity highlights why Charlton remains a popular spot. Its potential for a truly immersive and relaxing outdoor experience far outweighs minor logistical considerations for those prepared for a rustic, yet comfortable, adventure.

Features / Highlights

Charlton Recreation Area distinguishes itself with several unique features that make it a compelling destination for Arkansans:

  • The "Coldest Water" Swimming Hole: The spring-fed Walnut Creek is legendary among locals for its remarkably cold temperatures, even during the hottest Arkansas summers. This natural swimming hole, formed by a historic CCC-built stone dam, offers an incredibly refreshing and unique aquatic experience.
  • Historic CCC Legacy: The campground boasts a rich history, with many structures, including the dam and bathhouse, constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. This adds a charming, rustic aesthetic and a sense of historical depth to the natural setting.
  • Secluded, Shaded Forest Setting: Nestled in a valley between tree-covered mountains, the campsites are largely well-shaded by mature trees. This provides a consistently cool and comfortable environment, offering a true escape from direct sun and ambient noise. The campground is described as a "quiet wooded campground," even during busy seasons.
  • Privacy and Space: Reviews often mention "decent spacing between sites," contributing to a sense of privacy and preventing an overcrowded feeling, even when other campers are present.
  • Proximity to Hot Springs National Park: Being just a short 20-minute drive from Hot Springs offers the best of both worlds. Campers can enjoy the peace of the forest and then easily visit the city's historic bathhouses, vibrant downtown, Oaklawn, and other attractions.
