It's where the air is crisp, the aspens glow in the fall, and the quiet beauty of a mountain reservoir soothes the soul. This location offers a genuine escape from the daily grind, allowing you to reconnect with nature, your loved ones, and perhaps even yourself.
Whether you're an avid angler, a paddle boarding enthusiast, a budding astrophotographer, or simply someone looking for a tranquil spot to enjoy a campfire, Chapman Reservoir provides the perfect backdrop. Its blend of accessible amenities and raw natural beauty makes it an ideal choice for a weekend getaway or a longer family vacation right here in Colorado.
Chapman Reservoir Campground is conveniently located at Yampa, CO 80483, USA. This placement within the Routt National Forest positions it as an accessible mountain retreat for many Colorado residents. Yampa, a small town in Routt County, serves as a gateway to this beautiful area, offering a sense of remotity without being overly difficult to reach.
Accessing the campground typically involves driving on a mix of paved and unpaved forest roads. While the journey offers stunning scenic views, it’s important to be prepared for mountain driving conditions. Based on local experiences, parts of the road, especially past the reservoir to higher elevations, can become steep and rough, potentially requiring a high-clearance vehicle or even 4-wheel drive. For those without such vehicles, hiking might be a preferable option for exploring the more challenging terrain.
Despite its mountain setting, Chapman Reservoir Campground remains a practical destination for many. Its proximity to Yampa means that basic supplies can be acquired before heading to the campground. It’s always advisable to check current road conditions and weather forecasts, particularly during shoulder seasons (spring and fall) when conditions can change rapidly in the mountains.

Chapman Reservoir Campground Reviews
Beautiful Campground with a small but still pretty lake for fishing or paddle boarding. The night skies are phenomenal and great for astrophotography (my astrophotography pic was my very first one, so be kind). One big suggestion: if you are going up past the reservoir to the top for hunting, you will want a truck, it's a steep and rough climb, if you don't have a truck, I would say you should hike. The rocks get big and the road gets to 4 wheeling levels. We were lucky enough to get there while it was still in the 70s and the leaves were changing. Go now if you want the same experience!
Oct 02, 2022 · Jon ChaconMy friends and I camped out for 2 nights with two dogs. Great & gorgeous getaway for the weekend. We walked around the reservoir several times & hiked some small trails in the area. The morning we left, we saw lots of deer & bear tracks on the other side of the reservoir. **Another reminder that we're in bear country!** Our raft had a hole that was not repairable so we weren't able to go on the water but there were other people with rafts, paddle boards and canoes. Reservoir wasn't as clean as expected but we all had a great time! We look forward to coming back!Clean campsites, camp host was great & most campers were friendly. Most campers had dogs (not all were leashed). Bathroom facilities were relatively clean for a remote area.

Aug 02, 2020 · connie lewisNice USFS campground. For a campground listed as light usage it was quite busy in mid September. 80% full on the night we stayed. Pleasant camp host here. Water and vault toilets available and trash dumpsters. Best campfire rings I seen in a a USFS campground in a very long time! They were of the older lower and wider variety.
