Celtic Elk Campground

114 Cheyenne Ridge, Randle, WA 98377, USA

4.0
My partner, dog, and I loved our stay. It was the perfect base camp for us. We prefer to car camp so it was great that we could drive into an open field and park our cars next to a fire ring and relax. I loved the birds and sound of nature all around us. The grass in the field was long- but the RV area was short & tidy. We didn’t mind too much but something to note for cars with low clearance. I’m shocked at the amount of amenities there were while still being simplistic and minimal for the tent area. Porta potties, potable water, a garbage can. The host even had firewood for sale. Great location. Friendly host. Great property. Amazing price. I can’t wait to go back. - Erika Smith

Look no further than Celtic Elk Campground in Randle, WA. This unique destination, nestled in the heart of Southwest Washington, offers a compelling blend of simplicity and adventure, making it a fantastic base camp for exploring the surrounding Gifford Pinchot National Forest, the majestic Mount Rainier, and the iconic Mount St. Helens. While it embraces a more rustic approach to camping, it provides essential amenities and a genuine opportunity to disconnect and reconnect with nature.

Celtic Elk Campground isn't about luxury resorts or constant connectivity. It's about getting back to basics, enjoying the sounds of birds, and gathering around a campfire under a starlit sky. Local reviews highlight its appeal to those who prefer "car camping" in open fields, with the convenience of parking right next to a fire ring. It's a place where the grass might be long in the tent areas, but the welcome is warm, and the focus is on the tranquil environment. This article will provide a clear and factual overview of Celtic Elk Campground, detailing its location, the services it offers (or intentionally doesn't), its unique features, and why it's becoming a beloved spot for Washington locals seeking an authentic outdoor experience.

Whether you're an avid hiker, a keen angler, or simply a family looking to introduce children to the joys of the outdoors without the distractions of modern life, Celtic Elk Campground offers a refreshing alternative. We'll explore what makes this campground a suitable choice for those who appreciate simplicity, affordability, and direct access to some of Washington's most breathtaking natural wonders.

Location and Accessibility

Celtic Elk Campground is situated at 114 Cheyenne Ridge, Randle, WA 98377, USA. This address places it strategically in Randle, a small community in Lewis County, Washington, at the eastern edge of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Its location is a significant advantage for those looking to explore the natural wonders of Southwest Washington, as it serves as an excellent jumping-off point for adventures in the region.

The campground is nestled between three iconic Washington volcanoes: Mount Rainier to the north, Mount St. Helens to the southwest, and Mount Adams to the southeast. This positioning means easy day trip access to national parks and national forest lands, offering countless opportunities for hiking, fishing, wildlife viewing, and more. The Cowlitz River, known for its fishing opportunities, is also just a short 5-minute drive away, providing another convenient recreational outlet.

Access to Celtic Elk Campground is generally straightforward via well-maintained roads leading to Randle. For those arriving by RV, the property offers level land with hookups, as noted in reviews, making it accommodating for various vehicle types. However, visitors should be aware that some tent camping areas are in open fields with longer grass, which might be a consideration for vehicles with very low clearance, though it generally poses no significant issue for standard cars.

One crucial aspect of accessibility at Celtic Elk Campground, highlighted by reviews, is the deliberate lack of pervasive cellular service and Wi-Fi. For many Washingtonians seeking a genuine "disconnect" from urban life, this is a highly desirable feature, forcing a full immersion into nature. It means visitors should come prepared with offline maps and be comfortable being unreachable during their stay, truly embracing the tranquility of the wilderness. This intentional limitation on connectivity reinforces its identity as a true outdoor escape.

Services Offered

  • RV Sites with Hookups: Celtic Elk Campground provides RV sites, described as "level land that's been cleared out with water and electric hookups." These are typically 30-amp hookups, offering essential comforts for RV campers.

  • Tent Camping Sites: For those who prefer a more traditional experience, there are designated tent camping areas. Reviews suggest these are often open fields where campers can park their cars next to a fire ring, offering a simple yet effective setup.

  • Porta Potties: Restroom facilities are provided in the form of porta potties. While not flush toilets, they offer a convenient and functional solution for sanitation in a more rustic setting.

  • Potable Water: Access to potable water is available, which is a significant amenity for both RV and tent campers, ensuring a reliable source of drinking water.

  • Garbage Disposal: The campground provides garbage cans, allowing campers to dispose of their waste responsibly and help maintain the cleanliness of the property.

  • Firewood Sales: A helpful service mentioned in reviews is the availability of firewood for sale directly from the host, saving campers the trouble of bringing their own or foraging.

  • Basic Shower House: There is a shower house with two separate showers and sinks with hot water. While a review notes it might not look "inviting" and may contain toiletries, the presence of hot water is a practical amenity for refreshing after a day of outdoor activities.

  • Dry Cabins: The campground offers "two little sheds converted into tiny cabins" or "dry cabins," providing a minimal shelter option for those who prefer not to tent or RV camp.

  • Tipi Dry Site: A unique offering is a "teepee frame in a meadow of wildflowers," which is a dry site, likely providing a distinctive and memorable camping experience.

  • Equestrian Trails: The campground is connected to Gifford Pinchot National Forest trails, which include equestrian trails, catering to horseback riding enthusiasts.

  • RV Dump Station: While not explicitly detailed in provided reviews, common amenities for campgrounds with RV hookups often include an RV dump station. CampsitePhotos.com confirms the presence of a dump station.
