Cedro Peak Group Campground Introduce
Welcome, fellow New Mexicans, to an exploration of one of our region's hidden gems for outdoor enthusiasts: Cedro Peak Group Campground. Nestled within the scenic beauty of the Cibola National Forest, this campground offers a unique and memorable experience for groups looking to reconnect with nature, enjoy the crisp mountain air, and create lasting memories. Whether you're planning a family reunion, a scout troop outing, or a gathering of friends, Cedro Peak provides the perfect backdrop for your next outdoor adventure right here in our beautiful state.
Cedro Peak Group Campground is more than just a place to pitch a tent; it's an opportunity to immerse yourselves in the tranquility of the New Mexico wilderness while still being conveniently accessible. It’s designed specifically for groups, offering amenities that make collective camping comfortable and enjoyable. From large pavilions perfect for shared meals to ample space for multiple tents, this campground prioritizes the communal experience. We understand that finding the right spot for a group can be challenging, but Cedro Peak stands out as an excellent option for those seeking both seclusion and functionality. Its rustic charm, combined with practical features, makes it a highly sought-after destination for locals looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life without venturing too far from home.
The campground’s appeal also lies in its ability to cater to various camping styles within a group. Some may prefer a more traditional tent setup, while others might appreciate the convenience of driving their vehicle closer to their designated spot. This flexibility is a significant advantage, ensuring that everyone in your party can find their ideal camping arrangement. It’s truly a testament to the thoughtful design of the campground, aiming to maximize comfort and enjoyment for all visitors. The natural surroundings, characterized by towering trees and the serene sounds of the forest, further enhance the experience, providing a peaceful retreat from daily routines.
Cedro Peak Group Campground is situated in Tijeras, New Mexico, making it a highly accessible destination for residents across the state. Specifically, you'll find it at Cedro Peak Rd, Tijeras, NM 87059, USA. Its proximity to the greater Albuquerque area means that even day visitors can easily join your group for a picnic or a short hike, enhancing the flexibility of your gathering. This ease of access is a major draw, allowing groups to enjoy a true wilderness experience without the extensive travel often associated with remote campgrounds.
However, it is crucial to note the accessibility considerations for vehicles. While easily reachable, the campground loop itself presents a challenge for certain vehicles. Many visitors recommend approaching the campground exclusively via the east road. The west road, often described as the "way of destruction," is known for its rough terrain, steep inclines, and large boulders, making it suitable only for 4-wheel drive, high-clearance vehicles. Attempting to navigate the west road in a standard vehicle can lead to significant damage, and once you start, turning around may not be an option. Therefore, for a smooth and worry-free arrival, always plan to use the east road. This information, gleaned from the experiences of previous campers, is vital for a pleasant journey to your destination.
The clear directions and understanding of the terrain are important for anyone planning a trip. It’s always best to be prepared and understand the nuances of the local roads, especially when heading to a natural area. Knowing which route to take can significantly impact your overall experience, ensuring a stress-free start to your camping adventure. The beauty of Cedro Peak is worth the careful navigation, promising a rewarding experience once you arrive.
Cedro Peak Group Campground offers a range of services designed to accommodate groups effectively. While it provides a rustic camping experience, it ensures essential needs are met for a comfortable stay.
- No water or electricity: Campers should come prepared with their own water supply for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. The absence of electricity contributes to the secluded, off-grid feel, encouraging a true disconnection from modern conveniences.
- Fine restrooms: The campground is equipped with well-maintained restrooms, a crucial amenity for group camping. These facilities are located on the east side of the loop, reinforcing the recommendation to use the east road for easier access to all amenities.
- Lots of charcoal grills: For cooking and meal preparation, numerous charcoal grills are available, making it convenient for groups to prepare large meals together. Campers should bring their own charcoal.
These services, while basic, are precisely what many outdoor enthusiasts seek: the essentials for a comfortable stay without detracting from the natural environment. The emphasis is on self-sufficiency and enjoying the simplicity of nature, a core tenet of the Cedro Peak experience.
The unique features of Cedro Peak Group Campground make it particularly appealing for group outings:
- Spacious Group Sites: The campground offers large group sites, specifically mentioned as "Jay site" and "Robin site," both capable of accommodating numerous tents and people. The "Jay site" is often preferred for tent camping due to more designated spots.
- Huge Pavilions: Each site boasts a large pavilion, providing excellent shelter from sun or rain, and a central gathering point for meals, games, and socializing. These are invaluable for group activities.
- Tons of Tables: Ample picnic tables are available, ensuring everyone has a comfortable spot to eat, play cards, or simply relax.
- Large Fire Rings: Substantial fire rings are present at both sites, perfect for bonfires, storytelling, and marshmallow roasting, fostering a traditional camping atmosphere.
- Designated Tent Spots: Particularly at the Jay site, there are clearly marked tent areas, helping groups organize their sleeping arrangements efficiently.
- Vehicle Access to One Site (Jay Site): One specific tent site within the Jay area allows vehicles to drive directly into it, offering convenience for unloading gear or for those who prefer to sleep near their vehicle.
- Secluded Environment: Despite being close enough to town for day-trippers to join, the campground feels very secluded, providing a true escape into nature and minimizing disturbances from other campers.
- Close to Town for Day Visitors: Its proximity to Tijeras and the greater Albuquerque area means that people can easily join for a day, making it flexible for groups with varying schedules or camping preferences.
These highlights underscore why Cedro Peak Group Campground is a fantastic choice for group gatherings. The thoughtful layout and amenities cater directly to the needs of multiple people camping together, fostering a cohesive and enjoyable experience.

Cedro Peak Group Campground Reviews
3rd year to book it for a group camping trip. I definitely like the Jay site better than robin for tent camping. There are more designated spots. Both sites have a huge pavilion and tons of tables and a large fire ring. Jay has about 7 obvious rent sites, but more could fit. One site you can drive your vehicle into as well.No water, no electricity. Fine restrooms. Lots of charcoal grills.Great site for a medium group that is close enough to town that people can join for the day.
Jul 04, 2025 · Julie PearsonSee photos. Great camp site but the loop will. Kill. Your. Car! Only go in the east road. The west road is the way of destruction. 4 wheel drive only. Once you start you can’t turn around. Don’t risk it. Love your vehicle more than that.We got in late and loved the site. Very secluded. However. Half the loop is very high clearance, steep inclines and large boulders.I would camp again. But I’d stay on the east route!Learn from us! Bathrooms are on east side as well.

Apr 17, 2024 · Monika EvansThe park is very nice. Enjoyed a quiet ride up the mountain. The public picnic areas were cleaned and well maintained. A very nice enjoyable place. $3 vehicle fee for day use of picnic areas.
Sep 15, 2018 · Wolf XWKVery nice pavilon with tables. As another review said there is a lot of undergrowth removal and shredding of same. Very recent.Fire management. There are rattlesnakes around, but thats true most places.Restrooms clean. No water on site, you need to bring your own. There is a not functioning spigot at the gated fork in the road.
