Cedar River Campsites

Cedar River Rd, Indian Lake, NY 12842, USA

4.0
My dad and I always come out to this spot for the views and some fishing. I've explored some of the sites and they looked pretty good, I haven't camped there as we camp In the moose river planes area but it definitely looks like a nice place! I'd definitely say be aware the roads can be interesting depending on time of year, and I definitely found some bear poop while fishing so be aware that's a possibility. But definitely go check it out - Tim Feyerabend

This destination provides a rustic yet immensely rewarding camping experience, perfectly suited for those who prioritize natural beauty, outdoor activities, and a peaceful retreat from city life. Nestled amidst breathtaking views and with direct access to the Cedar River, it's a prime location for adventurers and nature lovers alike.

Cedar River Campsites isn't your average commercial campground with extensive amenities. Instead, it embodies the spirit of traditional Adirondack camping, offering a chance to truly disconnect and immerse yourself in the raw beauty of the region. Visitors consistently praise the stunning scenery, the excellent opportunities for water-based activities like kayaking and fishing, and the overall tranquility of the area. It's a place where the sounds of the river and the rustling leaves replace the urban hum, allowing for a profound sense of relaxation and rejuvenation.

Whether you're an avid angler, a passionate paddler, or simply someone who yearns for the solitude of the forest, Cedar River Campsites provides a welcoming haven. While it's important to be prepared for a more primitive camping experience, the rewards—the majestic views, the abundant wildlife, and the sheer joy of being outdoors—are immeasurable. This campground serves as an ideal base camp for exploring the vast expanses of the Adirondacks, including the renowned Moose River Plains, making it a truly exceptional choice for New Yorkers looking to embrace the wild side of their home state.

Location and Accessibility

Cedar River Campsites is situated at Cedar River Road, Indian Lake, NY 12842, USA. This address places it squarely within the sprawling and magnificent Adirondack Park, a jewel of New York State. Indian Lake itself is a picturesque town that serves as a popular gateway to countless outdoor adventures, making the campground easily accessible for many New York residents. The journey to the campsites often involves traveling along scenic routes, immediately setting the tone for a nature-filled getaway.

It's important for prospective campers to be aware that the roads leading to and within the campground can be "interesting" or "shaky in spots," particularly depending on the time of year. This is characteristic of many more rustic camping areas within the Adirondacks, where maintaining pristine paved roads in remote areas isn't always feasible or desirable. Visitors should be prepared for gravel or dirt roads and drive cautiously, especially after periods of rain or snowmelt. However, this minor inconvenience is a small price to pay for the seclusion and natural beauty that awaits.

Despite the rustic road conditions, the campground's proximity to the Cedar River Flow is a significant advantage, providing immediate access for water activities. Its location also serves as an excellent starting point for exploring the wider Moose River Plains area, which is highly regarded for its extensive network of primitive campsites and backcountry opportunities. For New Yorkers looking to truly get away from it all and experience the wild heart of the Adirondacks, the location of Cedar River Campsites is perfectly positioned to deliver that authentic outdoor experience.

Services Offered

Cedar River Campsites, based on available information and customer reviews, primarily offers a more rustic and less amenity-heavy camping experience, which is part of its charm for those seeking a true wilderness immersion. The services provided focus on the fundamental needs of campers in a natural setting:

  • Primitive Campsites: The campground offers individual campsites, described as "clustered but have some privacy here," indicating designated spots for pitching tents or parking small trailers. While sites may be relatively close in certain areas, there's still a sense of personal space.
  • Pit Toilets: Essential for any campground, pit toilets are available, though they are described as "clustered and not per spot." This means campers should be prepared for a short walk to access restroom facilities.
  • River Access: A significant highlight, the direct access to the Cedar River Flow is a primary service, enabling activities like kayaking, canoeing, and fishing right from the campground. This is a major draw for water enthusiasts.
  • Access to Moose River Plains: While not a direct service of the campground itself, its close proximity and ease of access to the Moose River Plains area allow campers to utilize the extensive primitive camping and recreational opportunities found there, effectively extending the "services" available to guests who are willing to explore further.

It is crucial to note that this campground emphasizes a more "back-to-basics" approach. Campers should plan to be self-sufficient regarding water, power, and waste disposal beyond what is minimally provided. This type of experience is ideal for those who appreciate simplicity and self-reliance in their outdoor adventures.

Features / Highlights

Cedar River Campsites boasts several key features and highlights that make it a compelling choice for outdoor enthusiasts in New York:

  • Stunning Adirondack Views: Consistently mentioned by visitors, the campground offers breathtaking scenic vistas. The natural beauty of the surrounding Adirondack landscape, with its forests, waterways, and mountains, is a major draw.
  • Direct River Access (Cedar River Flow): This is perhaps the most significant highlight. The immediate proximity to the Cedar River Flow makes it an exceptional spot for water-based activities.
  • Excellent for Kayaking and Fishing: Due to its riverside location, the campground is highly recommended for kayakers and anglers. The Cedar River Flow is known to be a productive fishing spot, and its calm waters are perfect for paddling.
  • Rustic Charm and Privacy: While sites can be "clustered," reviewers still note that some spots offer "privacy," providing a balance between community and seclusion. The overall rustic nature appeals to those seeking an authentic outdoor experience away from crowded, amenity-rich parks.
  • Proximity to Moose River Plains: A significant advantage, the campground serves as a gateway to the vast Moose River Plains area. This allows campers to easily venture into a larger wilderness preserve for more extensive exploration, including additional primitive camping options for those seeking even greater solitude.
  • Abundant Wildlife: The presence of wildlife, specifically mentioned through the sighting of "bear poop," indicates that the area is rich in natural inhabitants. This provides exciting opportunities for wildlife viewing, though it also underscores the need for proper food storage and awareness.
  • Nearby Creek: The mention of a "nice creek nearby" adds another dimension to the natural features, possibly offering additional opportunities for exploration, wading, or simply enjoying the sounds of flowing water.
  • Sense of Escape: The primary highlight for many is the feeling of truly getting away from it all. The remote location and focus on natural activities provide a genuine break from daily routines and urban environments.

Promotions or Special Offers

Given the nature of Cedar River Campsites as a more rustic and publicly managed (or similarly styled) campground within the Adirondack Park, it is generally less common for such sites to offer traditional commercial promotions or "special offers" in the way a private, amenity-rich resort might. These types of campgrounds typically operate on a fixed fee structure set by the managing authority, often the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) if it's a state-run facility, or following similar guidelines if it's a private, primitive campground.

Based on the provided reviews, which highlight its "not bad campgrounds" and focus on natural features like river access and privacy, there is no indication of ongoing promotions, discounts, or loyalty programs. The value of camping at Cedar River Campsites lies in its affordability relative to its prime location within the Adirondacks and the quality of the natural experience it provides.

Prospective campers are advised to look for general information regarding camping fees for the Adirondack region, which are usually standard across similar facilities. For specific fee details, including potential variations for in-state vs. out-of-state residents, or any seasonal rate adjustments, it would be best to consult the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) website or any official listing for Cedar River Campsites. While specific promotions may not be advertised, the inherent value of an accessible, authentic Adirondack camping experience at a reasonable cost serves as its own compelling offer for New York locals.
