Cedar Mountain Campground

Campground ★4.0

Utah, USA

4.0
There is a campground but not much space. There is a restroom that was not locked mid-December. No power or water. Excellent cell phone coverage as the towers are right there. Best thing is the view into San Rafael Swell. The attached image shows Cedar Mtn in the distance, with the campground and cell towers at the far eastern end. - Jeff Hayes

Cedar Mountain Campground Introduce

Welcome to Cedar Mountain Campground, a truly unique and scenic camping destination located in the heart of Utah. This is not a bustling, full-amenity campground, but rather a simple, quiet, and easily accessible spot that serves as an incredible base camp for exploring the vast and rugged beauty of the San Rafael Swell. What it lacks in commercial conveniences, it more than makes up for with its prime location and breathtaking vistas. The campground is situated on a high point, offering a panoramic view that locals describe as one of the best in the area. This is a perfect retreat for those who appreciate the peaceful solitude of the wilderness without having to completely sacrifice access to basic facilities. For Utahns looking for a quick and rewarding escape to the outdoors, Cedar Mountain Campground provides an ideal opportunity to set up camp and witness some of the state’s most dramatic landscapes.

Cedar Mountain Campground is located in Utah, USA, and is strategically positioned to provide stunning views of the San Rafael Swell. The campground is situated on Cedar Mountain itself, near the town of Huntington. Access is straightforward, as it's a short drive from the main road, and a review mentions it’s a site with easy accessibility. A key feature of its location is the presence of cell towers nearby, which ensures excellent cell phone coverage—a rare and valuable amenity for a remote camping site. The campground provides on-site parking, making it convenient to park your vehicle right at your camping spot. Its location allows for a seamless transition from your car to your campsite, which is particularly helpful for those with a lot of gear. The views from the campground into the San Rafael Swell are a major draw, providing a constant, magnificent backdrop for your camping experience.

Cedar Mountain Campground offers a few key services that, while minimal, greatly enhance the camping experience for those seeking a primitive yet comfortable stay.

Services Offered:

  • Public Restroom: A notable amenity is the presence of a public restroom, which, as one review pointed out, was unlocked even in the middle of winter. This is a welcome and convenient feature for a site that otherwise has very few facilities.

  • On-site parking: The campground provides on-site parking, making it easy to unload your gear and set up your camp.

  • No power or water: It is crucial to note that the campground has no power or water services. Campers must be fully self-sufficient and bring their own water and other supplies. This lack of amenities contributes to the campground’s quiet and rustic charm.

The features and highlights of Cedar Mountain Campground are deeply tied to its unique location and its ability to provide a peaceful and scenic outdoor experience.

Features / Highlights:

  • Exceptional Views: The most significant highlight is the campground's incredible view into the San Rafael Swell. From the high elevation of Cedar Mountain, campers can enjoy panoramic vistas of the rugged landscape below.

  • Excellent Cell Coverage: The presence of nearby cell towers ensures reliable cell phone service, a rare find in such a remote area. This offers a sense of security and a way to stay connected while enjoying the quiet of the outdoors.

  • Good for kids: The campground is noted as being "good for kids." The open space and beautiful scenery provide a great environment for children to explore and play safely.

  • Quiet and secluded: Because it has minimal space and lacks many amenities, the campground does not attract large crowds, making it a perfect spot for those who seek solitude and a quiet escape.

  • Rustic charm: The primitive nature of the campground is a highlight for those who prefer a back-to-basics camping experience, free from the distractions of more commercial sites.

As a simple, designated camping area rather than a commercial park, there is no public phone number for Cedar Mountain Campground itself. For information on the area or any regulations, it is best to contact the local Bureau of Land Management (BLM) office that manages the land.

  • Address: Utah, USA (The nearest town is Huntington, UT, and the area is managed by the BLM)

So, what is worth choosing about Cedar Mountain Campground? The primary reason is the incredible value it offers: a breathtaking view and a quiet, rustic camping experience with the added bonus of a public restroom and excellent cell coverage. A customer review perfectly captures the trade-offs: "not much space" but a "restroom that was not locked" and "excellent cell phone coverage." This simple combination is highly appealing for many campers who want to feel off-grid without being completely disconnected. While the occasional wildlife encounter, such as with a rattlesnake, can put a "damper on overall experience," it is a reminder that this is a wild and natural place, which is precisely its appeal. For Utahns seeking to set up a quick camp and be rewarded with a world-class view of the San Rafael Swell, Cedar Mountain Campground is a fantastic and convenient option. It’s the perfect spot for a weekend of peaceful reflection, stunning sunrises, and a true appreciation for the rugged beauty that defines the state.
