Cave Mountain Lake Campground

Natural Bridge Station, VA 24579, USA

4.0
We tent camped for two nights and had an absolutely wonderful stay. The bathhouse was incredibly clean and well stocked, even better than the public one at the lake. The sites themselves and fire pits were large and had cooking grates, each campsite had a metal bear-proof storage container, and two tall hooked poles to hang things like ropes, lights, laundry, hammocks, etc. The lake was within an easily walkable distance if one wanted, instead of driving. There’s plentiful space between site numbers allowing for added privacy, family activities, and sense of seclusion. Overall this is easily one of the best campgrounds I’ve ever stayed at, and we will absolutely be coming back in the future. - Emmett Lebendig

Features / Highlights

Cave Mountain Lake Campground offers a wealth of features that make it a truly special destination for Virginia locals seeking an authentic and memorable outdoor experience.

  • Crystal-Clear Lake Access: The centerpiece is the 7-acre Cave Mountain Lake, built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. It offers designated swimming areas with a sandy beach, fishing piers, and is stocked for trout fishing (with specific youth-only periods, and open to all with a valid Virginia fishing license for the rest of the season). The lake is "within an easily walkable distance" from campsites.

  • Exceptional Cleanliness of Facilities: Repeatedly highlighted by visitors, the bathhouse is "incredibly clean and well stocked," setting a high standard for campground hygiene. This attention to detail significantly enhances the camping experience.

  • Spacious and Private Campsites: Campers appreciate the "plentiful space between site numbers allowing for added privacy, family activities, and sense of seclusion." Sites are large, well-maintained, and include thoughtful amenities like bear-proof storage containers and "two tall hooked poles to hang things like ropes, lights, laundry, hammocks, etc."

  • Stream-Side Sites: Many campsites are situated "right off a nice stream," offering soothing sounds and a picturesque setting, as noted by appreciative campers.

  • Disconnect and Unplug: A key feature for many is the absence of cell service at the camp and in the surrounding area. While this requires preparation (downloading maps), it's seen as a major positive, allowing campers to truly "disconnect and relax and enjoy the peace and quiet and darkness while sitting by the campfire."

  • Proximity to Hiking Trails: The campground and surrounding recreation area offer numerous hiking opportunities, from a short walk around the lake to more strenuous trails like Panther Knob and the Wildcat Trail (which is described as "strenuous" and requires good physical condition). The Appalachian National Scenic Trail and Thunder Ridge Wilderness areas are also nearby for serious trekkers.

  • Wildlife Viewing: The natural setting provides excellent opportunities for birding and wildlife viewing.

  • Historic Charm: The lake and nearby structures like the group picnic shelter were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, adding a layer of historical significance to the recreational area.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a campground primarily managed by the U.S. Forest Service (Glenwood & Pedlar Ranger Districts) within the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, Cave Mountain Lake Campground generally adheres to federal fee structures rather than offering extensive commercial promotions. However, there are still ways that campers, especially Virginia locals, can find value or potential discounts.

Standard fees typically include:

  • Single Campsite: $20 per night.

  • Double Campsite: $40 per night (accommodates up to 12 people).

  • Group Campsite: Rates vary based on group size ($20-$40 per night for up to 30 people).

  • Day Use Fee: $8 per vehicle for access to the lake and picnic areas (or $2 per person for walk-ins/buses).

For those who qualify, a significant offer is the America the Beautiful Senior Pass and Access Pass, which provides a 50% discount on the base campsite fee (does not apply to hookups, as there are none, or the day-use fee separately). No other America the Beautiful Interagency Passes are generally valid for campground discounts here.

It is always recommended to check the official Recreation.gov website for the most current pricing, reservation policies, and any specific seasonal offers or changes in fees. While the campground itself may not run traditional "promotions," its consistent quality, serene environment, and access to natural resources at a reasonable federal rate constitute significant value for Virginia locals.
