One of the most appealing features, particularly for anglers, is the direct access to two private fishing lakes right on the property. Imagine casting your line into clear mountain waters without needing a state fishing license – this is a unique convenience that distinguishes Castle Lakes. Beyond fishing, the campground's strategic position offers immediate entry points to the legendary Alpine Loop, making it a prime base for off-roading enthusiasts, hikers, and anyone eager to explore the rugged beauty of Colorado's backcountry.
For many Coloradans, Lake City itself holds a special place, often described as a "small friendly town." Castle Lakes Campground perfectly complements this charm, providing a peaceful retreat within easy reach of the town's amenities while still feeling wonderfully secluded. It’s a place where you can spend your days exploring challenging trails or simply relaxing by the lake, knowing that a comfortable and friendly base awaits your return.

Castle Lakes Campground is conveniently located at 8201 HC Road #30, Lake City, CO 81235, USA. This address places it approximately 9 miles south of the charming town of Lake City, and about 4 miles above Lake San Cristobal, along the historic Cinnamon Pass Road. Critically, it is situated directly on the Alpine Loop National Backcountry Byway, a renowned scenic and off-road route that connects Lake City, Ouray, and Silverton.
Accessing Castle Lakes Campground involves a scenic drive. From Lake City, you will take County Road 30 (Cinnamon Pass Road). The first few miles of this road may be paved, but it quickly transitions to a well-maintained gravel road. While the road is generally suitable for most vehicles, including RVs and those towing trailers, it is important to be prepared for mountain driving conditions and potential dust. The journey itself is part of the experience, offering stunning views and a gradual ascent into the heart of the San Juan Mountains. Its direct location on the Alpine Loop means that once you arrive, you have immediate access to a vast network of off-road trails, making it an incredibly convenient base for exploring the high country without needing to re-trailer your OHV.
Given its elevation of around 9,200 feet, the campground's operating season typically runs from mid-May through early October, depending on snowmelt and weather conditions. It is always advisable to check current road conditions and opening dates, especially during the shoulder seasons. The remote yet accessible location strikes a perfect balance, allowing for true immersion in nature while still being within a reasonable drive of Lake City for supplies and services.

Castle Lakes Campground Reviews
Wonderful location in the middle of the forest where the stars shine bright at night. We stayed in cabin C and it provided us the essentials, mainly a place to lay our heads at the end of a full day of riding. We fell in love with the small friendly town of Lake City a few years ago and continue to keep it at the top of our list.
Jan 20, 2025 · JeubaCastle Lakes is a beautiful campground on the Alpine Loop with direct access to two private lakes. It doesn’t get much prettier. To top it off, the service level provided by Monica and Ben is outstanding! I highly recommend a stay here if you are in the Lake City area.
Sep 18, 2024 · Eric WatersCampground is beautiful, right in the forest next to two crystal clear lakes. Ben was very helpful and nice. There are nice hiking trails near by and we were 20 min from Lake City.We also biked on the Aloine loop right by the campground.Be aware of the potential for the altitude sickness. For us it wasn’t too bad ( a bit of headache and hard time to fall asleep), you might want to allow a couple of days to get used to it before doing a long hike. For the negative part: We broke down with our tow vehicle, we arrived one day later. And we had to leave one day early because of very bad allergies due to the forest. The pollen was in full in June! We didn’t know that would have been so bad.You might want to go in August or September. So we pay two days that we didn’t actually used.It would have been a nice gesture to them to give us a credit for one of the day but they didn’t. A nice gesture to make you want to come back when the pollen is not so bad.Overall nice campground, quite with a beautiful scenery and helpful staff
Jun 25, 2024 · NCWe loved everything about Castle Lakes! The RV campsites are nice because they are not right on top of each other. Plenty of room for dogs, camping chairs, & coolers. The office has plenty of souvenirs & necessities, but don't expect to go by the posted hours of operation as the host(s) live there & they are on their own time.
Sep 06, 2024 · Trey MarlarSpent the month of July tenting here… loved every minute of it! Ben and Gabby are doing a great job providing a friendly, welcoming place to relax and spend your vacation. Castle Lakes is our home away from home… can’t wait for next summer!
