Cascade Lake 4E3

Campground ★5.0

Yellowstone National Park, WY 82190, USA

5.0
This site was great. A short two mile hike from the trail head lead us through a few meadows and some light wooded areas. We saw mule deer doe and a buffalo bull on our way in. Once we got to the site, we had a great view of the lake from our tent. Listened to a bull elk across the lake bugle most of the night. Woke up early to 3 cranes 50 yards from our tent. Frost on the ground and a thin layer of ice on the lake. Right at sun up, a wolf crossed the meadow towards the lake. What an amazing experience! - Joel Blackner (CptBlkBrd)

Cascade Lake 4E3 is a designated backcountry campsite located within Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. Its address is within the park’s boundaries, in the central region near Canyon Village. It is important to note that this is a hike-in only campsite and is not accessible by vehicle. The trailhead is located on the Grand Loop Road, just a short distance from Canyon Junction, making it relatively easy to find. The parking for the trailhead is on-site, allowing you to leave your vehicle safely while you embark on your journey.

The hike to Cascade Lake 4E3 is a short and pleasant two-mile trek from the trailhead. The trail is well-maintained and relatively flat, passing through a few meadows and lightly wooded areas. This makes it an ideal choice for families and those new to backcountry camping, as the journey is not overly strenuous. This easy accessibility is one of the primary reasons why the site is considered "Good for kids." Despite the short distance, the trail offers immediate immersion in the Yellowstone landscape, with opportunities to see various wildlife right from the start.

As with all backcountry sites in Yellowstone, a valid backcountry permit is required for any overnight stay. These permits must be obtained in advance or at a backcountry office within the park, so it is essential to plan ahead. While the hike is short, campers must still be fully prepared for a wilderness experience. There are no services once you leave the trailhead, so you must carry all of your gear, food, and water filtration supplies. The relative ease of access combined with the true wilderness feel is a significant part of the site’s appeal.

Services Offered

  • Primitive Camping: Cascade Lake 4E3 is a primitive campsite, meaning it offers a very basic, no-frills camping experience. There are no modern amenities like running water, flush toilets, or electricity. Campers must be entirely self-sufficient, packing in all of their necessary supplies and gear. All food, garbage, and scented items must be stored in a bear-resistant canister or hung from a food pole or tree, at least 10 feet off the ground and 4 feet out from the trunk. This is a critical safety rule that protects both campers and the local wildlife. Campers are responsible for bringing their own method of secure food storage.

  • On-site Parking: While there is no parking at the campsite itself, there is a dedicated parking area at the trailhead. This provides a secure and convenient place to leave your vehicle while you hike in to the campground.
