Canton Creek Campground

Steamboat Creek Rd, Idleyld Park, OR 97447, USA

4.0
An absolute fun day for swimming, kids jumping in and river snorkeling. We went just up the road to the Little Falls and spent the day there. Hot day and even though it was shady in the canyon the wind blowing the warm air down off of the hillside it was so enjoyable temperature-wise. Water isn't too cold and we spent a lot of the day actually in the water. There were a lot of people there early but the pool at the bottom of the falls is huge so it doesn't seem that crowded. - Isaac Aanrud

It's a place where the soothing sounds of the creek are your constant companion, and the clear, inviting waters beckon you to jump in and cool off on a warm Oregon day.

Canton Creek Campground is particularly celebrated for its exceptional swimming opportunities. Visitors rave about the "absolute fun day for swimming, kids jumping in and river snorkeling." Just a short stroll up the road, you'll find "Little Falls," a popular spot with a generously sized pool at the bottom, ensuring it never feels too crowded even when many people are enjoying the water. Even on hot days, the shaded canyon combined with a gentle breeze creates a remarkably comfortable temperature, making it ideal for spending hours immersed in the cool, clear water.

More than just a swimming hole, Canton Creek Campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the diverse landscapes of the Umpqua National Forest. Whether you're an avid hiker, a keen angler, or simply looking for a peaceful spot to picnic and relax, this campground offers something for everyone. Its charm lies in its simplicity and its direct connection to the pristine natural environment that makes Oregon so special.

Location and Accessibility

Canton Creek Campground is conveniently located at Steamboat Creek Road, Idleyld Park, OR 97447, USA. This places it deep within the scenic Umpqua National Forest in Southern Oregon, making it a prime destination for those looking to immerse themselves in the region's abundant natural beauty. To reach the campground from Roseburg, Oregon, you'll embark on a picturesque journey east on OR-138 (North Umpqua Highway) for approximately 39 miles. From there, you'll turn left onto Forest Road 38, also known as Steamboat Creek Road, and the campground entrance is just about 0.25 miles down this road on your right.

The entrance road and the day-use parking area within the campground are paved, ensuring relatively easy access for most passenger vehicles. While the campsite parking spurs themselves are native dirt or gravel, they are generally manageable. The campground's location along Steamboat Creek, near its confluence with the North Umpqua River, highlights its accessibility to major water features that define the area.

It's important to note that while the campground itself is accessible, some of the trails leading down to the creek can be steep in places, as noted by visitors. This adds to the natural, rugged feel of the area but is something to be mindful of, especially for families with small children or those with mobility concerns. Despite its somewhat remote feel, Canton Creek Campground is recognized as "easily accessible for those quick weekend getaways," making it a popular choice for locals throughout the camping season.
