Camp Ward Introduce
Idahoans, we know the true value of wide-open spaces and uninterrupted views of our stunning natural landscapes. While many campgrounds offer a full suite of services, sometimes the best adventures are found when you're a bit more self-sufficient, truly immersing yourself in the tranquility of the great outdoors. For those who embrace self-contained camping and appreciate expansive, uncrowded sites, Camp Ward within Farragut State Park near Athol, Idaho, presents an exceptional opportunity.
Camp Ward is an integral part of the magnificent Farragut State Park, a vast recreational area with a rich history, located on the southern tip of Lake Pend Oreille. Unlike some of the more developed campgrounds within the park, Camp Ward is specifically designed for campers who are fully self-contained. This means you won't find individual water or electrical hookups at each site, offering a more traditional and often more private camping experience. It’s an ideal choice for RVers with their own power and water, or tent campers who are prepared for a rustic, yet comfortable, stay. For locals seeking a quieter, more spacious alternative to the busier, full-hookup sites, Camp Ward delivers excellent value and a genuine connection with Idaho's pristine environment.
Camp Ward is located within Farragut State Park, with its address linked to the park's general location in Athol, ID 83801, USA. Specifically, you'll find it by navigating into the heart of Farragut State Park. This prime position within the park means it’s easily accessible for Idaho residents, particularly those in Northern Idaho and even the broader Inland Northwest region. From major cities like Coeur d'Alene, the drive is straightforward and scenic, typically taking less than an hour. Spokane, Washington, is also a reasonable distance, making it a convenient escape for those just across the state line.
Upon entering Farragut State Park (which requires a vehicle entrance fee), clear signage guides visitors to the various campgrounds, including Camp Ward. The internal roads are generally paved, ensuring smooth travel for RVs and other vehicles. While Camp Ward itself might offer a more "no-frills" experience in terms of individual site services, its location within the sprawling state park provides effortless access to all of Farragut's extensive amenities and recreational opportunities, from the shores of Lake Pend Oreille to miles of hiking and biking trails.
Spacious Campsites: Camp Ward is known for its large, generously spaced campsites, offering more privacy than many conventional campgrounds. These sites are designed to accommodate both RVs (that are self-contained) and tents.
No Individual Site Hookups: It is crucial for visitors to note that Camp Ward does not provide individual water, electric, or sewer hookups at each site. Campers must be fully self-contained, meaning they have their own onboard water, power, and waste tanks.
Access to Park Dump Stations: While individual sewer hookups are not available at sites, Farragut State Park does provide free dump stations conveniently located outside of the specific campgrounds, allowing RVers to empty their tanks.
Access to Potable Water (Centralized): While not at individual sites, potable water is available within Farragut State Park at centralized locations, usually near dump stations or visitor centers, for filling RV tanks or collecting water for tent camping needs.
Communal Restrooms: While individual sites lack direct services, campers have access to the park's general restroom facilities. While often clean, it's worth noting these are not typically right at each campsite in Camp Ward's more dispersed layout.
Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each campsite typically includes a picnic table and a designated fire ring with a grate, perfect for outdoor cooking and enjoying campfires (fire restrictions permitting).
Well-Maintained Landscape: Despite the lack of hookups, the campground itself is noted for being nicely kept, with good views of the surrounding area and mountains.
Large, Private Spots: The standout feature of Camp Ward is its spacious sites, providing campers with a greater sense of privacy and room to spread out compared to more densely packed campgrounds.
Scenic Views: Campers can enjoy great views of the surrounding area and mountains, offering a tranquil and picturesque backdrop to their outdoor experience.
Value for Money: For those who don't require full hookups, Camp Ward offers a more budget-friendly option for camping within the popular Farragut State Park, especially when compared to the higher rates for full-hookup sites in other park loops.
Integration with Farragut State Park: Being part of Farragut State Park means direct access to all the park's extensive recreational offerings. This includes miles of hiking and biking trails, access to Lake Pend Oreille for boating, fishing, and swimming, disc golf courses, and the historical Museum at the Brig.
Paved Roads and Bike Paths: The campground, and the park at large, feature paved roads that are excellent for walking, running, or cycling, enhancing the overall outdoor experience.
Opportunity for Self-Sufficiency: It caters specifically to campers who enjoy being self-contained, appreciating the freedom and often quieter atmosphere that comes with fewer direct services.
Forested and Open Spaces: The terrain at Camp Ward offers a mix of forested areas for shade and open spaces, providing diverse options for setting up camp and enjoying different aspects of the natural environment.

Camp Ward Reviews
No services so you must be self contained. Nice large spots with great views of area and mountains. Much better value for Farragut camping and not right next to each other as you are in the electrical/water/sewer spots. Full hookups are now approaching $40/night. Farragut does have dump stations outside of the campgrounds.
