Camp Sacajawea Introduce
For New Jersey locals seeking a unique and versatile space that goes beyond the typical event venue or campground, Camp Sacajawea in Sparta, NJ, offers a distinctive proposition. This expansive 200-acre property on White Lake Road blends the rustic charm of a former Girl Scout camp with the capacity to host large-scale events, including weddings and corporate retreats. It’s not a public campground in the traditional sense, but rather a private site available for exclusive rental, making it an ideal choice for groups looking for a personalized and immersive experience.
Camp Sacajawea embraces its natural, rustic setting, providing a backdrop that has been praised for its beauty and versatility. It caters to those who appreciate an authentic outdoor experience, offering basic yet functional accommodations and a wealth of open space. The venue has gained particular renown for its ability to transform into themed events, with some even successfully hosting "Lord of the Rings" themed weddings, leveraging the natural landscape and available decor to create truly memorable occasions.
For New Jersey residents planning a large gathering, a corporate team-building retreat, or a wedding that stands out from the conventional, Camp Sacajawea presents an appealing and budget-friendly alternative. It offers the flexibility to bring in preferred vendors and create a truly custom event, all within a beautiful and secluded natural environment right here in the Garden State.
Camp Sacajawea is located at 251 White Lake Rd, Sparta, NJ 07871, USA. This address places it in Sussex County, in the picturesque northern part of New Jersey. Sparta is known for its rolling hills, pristine lakes, and a more rural, yet accessible, character compared to the state's denser regions.
The camp's location offers a sense of escape and privacy, being set on 200 acres with a private lake. While providing a secluded feel, it is also conveniently situated "far enough away from the bustle of the more civilized areas, but not so far that it's an impossible trek to take a quick drive for any needed supplies." This means guests can enjoy the tranquility of nature while still having relatively easy access to local towns and amenities in Sparta and surrounding areas for necessities.
Accessibility to Camp Sacajawea is generally good via New Jersey's road network, although it is important for visitors to note its "campground" nature, which implies unpaved or gravel roads on the property. For out-of-town guests attending events, Sparta and nearby towns offer various accommodation options if the camp's rustic cabins are not preferred for an overnight stay. The location makes it a practical choice for New Jersey groups seeking an immersive outdoor venue that is within reasonable driving distance.
Camp Sacajawea functions primarily as a private rental venue for groups and events, offering a suite of services designed to facilitate such gatherings rather than individual public camping. Key services and provisions include:
- Exclusive Venue Rental: When booked for an event (especially weddings), the entire 200-acre grounds and facilities are typically reserved exclusively for your group, often for a multi-day period (e.g., three-day wedding blocks).
- Overnight Accommodations: The camp offers basic, rustic sleeping accommodations in cabins and bunkhouses, furnished with camping bunks and thin mattresses. These can sleep approximately 150 people in cabins, plus additional space in large canvas tents on platforms (outside of winter months). Electricity is available in buildings for essentials like CPAP machines.
- Event Spaces: Multiple indoor and outdoor spaces are available, including a spacious Grand Hall, a medieval-themed Bar Room, a commercial kitchen, and various outdoor areas suitable for ceremonies, receptions, and activities.
- Commercial Kitchen: A fully equipped commercial kitchen is on-site, capable of preparing food for large groups (100-200 people), ideal for caterers or self-catering groups.
- Lake Access: Exclusive access to a private lake is included, allowing for swimming, fishing, and non-motorized boating (rowboats, canoes, paddle boats, life vests provided).
- Recreational Activities: The venue provides resources for various activities, often including outdoor archery, axe throwing, and a variety of large outdoor games (Jenga, Connect Four, Cornhole, Horseshoes).
- Event Resources and Decor: A wealth of decoration options, banquet tables, folding chairs, benches, table cloths, silverware sets, and other resources are included with wedding rentals.
- Flexible Vendor Policy: The camp allows clients to bring any vendors they wish, offering flexibility in catering, photography, and other services.
- No Sound Ordinances or Quiet Hours: This is a significant advantage for events, allowing for extended celebrations without noise restrictions.
It's important for prospective renters to be aware that while electricity is available, other comforts might be basic. Reviewers suggest bringing "extra sleeping bags in the winter," "linens, food, and warm bedding," and to "expect mud and the basic necessities."
Camp Sacajawea offers a truly unique set of features and highlights that make it stand out as an event venue and group camping destination in New Jersey:

Camp Sacajawea's "special offers" are primarily structured through its various rental packages and the value inherent in its unique offerings, rather than traditional short-term discounts. For events, particularly weddings, the "offer" is the exclusive, multi-day use of a 200-acre property with extensive amenities and a vast collection of included decor. This provides significant value by allowing clients to save on external rentals and enjoy a more relaxed, extended celebration.
- Multi-Day Exclusive Use: The standard wedding package includes exclusive use of the entire grounds for three days (Friday to Sunday), allowing for rehearsal dinners, the main event, and post-wedding brunches.
- Inclusive Amenities: The flat-rate rental fees typically cover utilities, basic accommodations for a large number of guests (over 150), and access to all recreational facilities and a significant amount of decor and event resources. This transparency means "no additional taxes, gratuities, utility costs, or other hidden fees."
- Winter Flat Rates: They offer specific flat rates for main building rentals during the winter months (January-March), providing a potentially more budget-friendly option for off-season events.
- DIY-Friendly Approach: While not a discount, the flexibility to bring your own caterers and other vendors allows for significant cost savings and personalization, which can be a major "offer" for budget-conscious clients.

Not the Hilton. But good option for putting up wedding parties from out of town. Was cold, so do bring extra sleeping bags in the winter. Has electricity for cpap machines. Expect old girl scout camp with wooden pallets and thin mattresses. Expect mud and the basic necessities. Bring linens, food and warm bedding. Budget friendly.
Feb 27, 2025 · Laurel Price GaylorI am beyond overdue in reviewing this venue. James helped my wedding be a dream come true. The land, the tavern, the details- they were all so beautiful and all of my guests had a wonderful time. It is more rustic, but that was perfect for us! It matched our Lord of the Rings theme! Please consider using this venue for your wedding or large event!!!
Jul 30, 2023 · Jamie McAteeMy Husband and I got Married October 8th, 2022 and our weekend was absolutely perfect. Everyone still talks our wedding. James was so kind and helpful from the very beginning. Mike and I definitely recommend getting married here.
May 28, 2025 · Tabitha WordMy husband I had our wedding ceremony and reception here on June 16th of this year. James was absolutely amazing and did an amazing job making our day as special as possible. We had our ceremony in front of a giant wooden structure that we decorated with wisteria, and had our dinner and first dance under a massive tent with pretty lighting. Our dancing and partying took place in the main hall which was so pretty with the decorations and lighting. We had an upstairs section of the building dedicated to the wedding party for us to get ready or make any last minute adjustments as well as keep our items there for safe keeping. My husband I had our first look by the lake, and because the venue is used for ren faire events, we chose to include archery and axe throwing during cocktail hour which our guests absolutely adored. We got some awesome shots of us also participating and it was such a fun time! Overall James was incredible and his staff did an awesome job at making our day perfect. We did our wedding ala carte so we saved a ton on costs as this location was also very cost efficient and we could customize our day to whatever we needed. Make sure to figure out parking for your guests so that it’s easier for them to figure out where to go since this is a massive venue and technically a camp ground. Please please please consider this location for your wedding if you’d like to do something unique and special. We did our wedding with minor fantasy style themes and it was such a hit and so special to us. Thank you!!
