Camp Chi-Keena

Campground, Children's camp ★4.0

8 Mile Canyon Rd, Soda Springs, ID 83276, USA

4.0
We got there after dark and it was a little confusing as to how to get around and finding the campsite. Roads to get there are one line with barely enough space for one car at a time. Then at the campsites there is enough space for one car and any extra cars have to park at the entrance parking area. - Larry Anderson

Camp Chi-Keena Introduce

Nestled in the breathtaking natural beauty of southeastern Idaho, Camp Chi-Keena offers a unique and memorable camping experience unlike any other. More than just a campground, it’s a dedicated space designed with youth, families, and spiritual groups in mind. Located in the picturesque wilderness near Soda Springs, this site provides a rustic yet functional environment where you can disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature and one another. Camp Chi-Keena is particularly well-suited for groups associated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, offering a supportive and serene setting for youth camps, conferences, and family gatherings. From its tranquil atmosphere to its essential amenities, it is a place where cherished memories are made amidst the Idaho pines.

Camp Chi-Keena is situated at 8 Mile Canyon Rd, Soda Springs, ID 83276, USA, making it a secluded yet accessible destination for those familiar with the area. It is important for visitors to note the nature of the roads leading to the camp. The access roads are steep and primarily one-lane, requiring careful navigation, especially for those arriving after dark. We recommend arriving during daylight hours to familiarize yourself with the terrain. The camp’s location provides a sense of quiet isolation, perfect for a true outdoor retreat. While the main roads can be a bit tight, once you arrive at the camp, you will find ample space to settle in. On-site parking is available, but for extra vehicles, a designated parking area at the entrance helps maintain the peaceful and uncluttered feel of the main campsites. The journey to Camp Chi-Keena is part of the adventure, leading you to a beautiful and peaceful destination.

Camp Chi-Keena provides a focused set of services and amenities designed to meet the needs of its primary users—youth and church groups. While it maintains a rustic feel, the essential facilities are in place to ensure a comfortable and safe experience for all campers.

  • Public Restrooms and Showers: The campground is equipped with public restrooms and showers, providing a convenient way to freshen up after a day of outdoor activities. These facilities are maintained to ensure a clean and hygienic environment for all guests.

  • Running Water and Sinks: Each campsite has access to running, potable water and a sink. This is a significant convenience, especially for meal preparation and washing dishes, as it eliminates the need to carry in large quantities of water. This feature is a real highlight for groups managing food for many people.

  • Designated Tent Sites: The tent sites are flat and well-maintained, offering a clean and comfortable spot to pitch your tent. These areas are designed to provide an ideal base for group activities and relaxation.

  • On-Site Pavilion: Many of the campsites feature a small, covered pavilion. This provides a communal space for groups to gather, eat, and hold meetings, offering shelter from sun or rain. It's a key feature for a comfortable group camping experience.

  • Lodge/Shelter: There is a lodge on-site which acts as a wooden shelter. While not a full-service building, it provides a secure place to store food and supplies away from local wildlife. Future plans for this building include a kitchen upgrade, which will further enhance its utility for large groups.

  • Amphitheater: A decent-sized amphitheater is available for group meetings, fireside chats, and presentations. It's an excellent feature for creating a sense of community and holding large group activities in a dedicated space.

The unique features and highlights of Camp Chi-Keena are what make it a special place for its visitors. The camp's design and purpose are clearly geared towards creating a positive and supportive environment, particularly for children and youth.

  • Excellent for Kids: Camp Chi-Keena is specifically noted as a great place for kids. The environment is safe, and the focus on group activities makes it an ideal setting for young campers to learn and grow. The layout and facilities are well-suited for a youth-oriented experience, with plenty of room to explore and play safely.

  • Group-Friendly Facilities: The covered pavilions, amphitheater, and dedicated tent sites are perfect for managing large groups. These facilities help to organize daily routines, from meals to group discussions, making the camp a highly functional location for a youth camp or retreat.

  • Rustic Charm with Essential Conveniences: The camp strikes a perfect balance between a rustic, back-to-nature feel and providing essential conveniences. The presence of running water, restrooms, and showers means that you don't have to sacrifice hygiene for a true wilderness experience. The camp is not overly developed, allowing you to fully appreciate the natural surroundings.

  • Planned Upgrades: The commitment to improving the facilities, such as the planned kitchen upgrade for the lodge, demonstrates a forward-thinking approach. This will make the camp even more convenient and appealing for future visitors, especially those who rely on cooking for large groups.
