We'll delve into its location, the services and features it provides, and why it's a suitable choice for locals looking for a private, dedicated space for their next event or group getaway.
Camp Cedarcrest is a private camp and retreat facility located in Orange, Connecticut. While it functions as a campground, it's often recognized for its distinct appeal as a venue primarily geared towards group rentals and events rather than individual public campsites. It's described as a "small and quaint" property, offering a more personalized and controlled environment for its visitors.
Over the years, Camp Cedarcrest has hosted a variety of events, ranging from weddings and receptions to youth camps, church retreats, and family gatherings. Reviewers consistently praise the comfort of its cabins, the utility of its kitchen facilities, and unique features like the "Fire Theatre." This versatility, combined with its welcoming atmosphere, makes Cedarcrest a hidden gem in the Connecticut landscape, providing a dedicated space for groups to gather, learn, and enjoy the outdoors without sacrificing convenience. While it may require "a little tidying up" at times, the overall experience is positive, emphasizing its charm and functionality for group-focused activities.
Camp Cedarcrest is strategically located at 886 Mapledale Rd, Orange, CT 06477, USA. Orange is a suburban town in New Haven County, Connecticut, known for its blend of residential areas, commercial development, and accessible open spaces.
One of the most notable aspects of Camp Cedarcrest's location, as highlighted by a reviewer, is its surprising proximity to urban centers: it's "just 10 minutes from New Haven." This accessibility is a significant advantage for Connecticut locals, particularly those in the southern part of the state. New Haven offers a wealth of amenities, including major transportation hubs (like Union Station for train service), diverse dining options, cultural attractions (Yale University, museums, theaters), and a bustling city center. Being so close means groups utilizing Cedarcrest can easily access supplies, enjoy city excursions, or have attendees travel from various parts of the state and beyond with relative ease.
Despite its proximity to a busy bi-way (as mentioned by a reviewer), Mapledale Road itself likely offers a more secluded approach to the camp, providing a sense of retreat once on the property. This balance of feeling "tucked away" while remaining highly accessible makes Camp Cedarcrest an ideal spot for events where convenience for attendees is a priority. It's easy for locals to reach for weekend retreats, day events, or multi-day programs without extensive travel.
Camp Cedarcrest offers a range of services and facilities specifically designed to cater to group rentals and various events, providing a more comprehensive setup than a typical individual campsite. While it's "not your average campground," its amenities enhance the experience for organized gatherings. Key services and facilities often include:
- Cabin Rentals: The camp features cabins that are described as "a lot nicer than other campgrounds." These likely provide comfortable, sheltered lodging for groups, often equipped with beds or bunks.
- Kitchen Facilities: A significant highlight mentioned by a reviewer is the "kitchen is a godsend." This indicates a well-equipped, communal kitchen space, essential for groups needing to prepare meals for a large number of people, whether self-catering or bringing in caterers.
- Communal Bathrooms and Showers: As noted by a wedding attendee, "There were showers and bathrooms of course," ensuring essential hygiene facilities are available for all guests.
- Event Pavilion/Reception Area: The presence of a "cool pavilion where the reception was" suggests a dedicated covered space suitable for gatherings, meals, workshops, or celebrations, crucial for hosting events like weddings.
- "Fire Theatre": This unique feature, highlighted by a returning visitor, suggests a specialized outdoor area designed for campfires, storytelling, or performances, adding a distinct and memorable element to group activities.
- Group Event Hosting: The primary service is providing a full camp environment for rental by various groups, including youth groups, church camps, school programs, corporate retreats, and private family events.
- Outdoor Space for Activities: The property offers general grounds and open areas suitable for various outdoor group activities, games, or simply relaxation amidst nature.
Camp Cedarcrest possesses several unique features and highlights that set it apart and contribute to its appeal, particularly for groups and individuals in Connecticut seeking a distinctive outdoor venue.
- Intimate and Quaint Atmosphere: Described as a "very small and quaint campground," Cedarcrest offers a more intimate and less overwhelming environment compared to larger, bustling public campgrounds. This can be ideal for groups seeking privacy and a closer-knit experience.
- Quality Cabins: Reviewers specifically highlight that "the cabins are a lot nicer than other camp grounds I've been to." This suggests comfortable and well-maintained lodging options that enhance the stay, especially for those not accustomed to roughing it in tents.
- Dedicated Kitchen Facilities: The "kitchen is a godsend" comment points to a significant amenity for group catering. A communal kitchen space is invaluable for preparing meals efficiently for large parties, differentiating it from many basic campgrounds.
- Unique "Fire Theatre": This mentioned feature sounds like a specialized outdoor gathering space, possibly an amphitheater or a designated area with seating around a large fire pit, perfect for evening programs, storytelling, or informal performances. This adds a memorable element to group events.
- Versatile Pavilion/Reception Area: A "cool pavilion" suitable for receptions indicates a flexible, covered space that can accommodate various indoor/outdoor activities, making it ideal for events like weddings, workshops, or group meals regardless of weather.
- Proximity to New Haven: Despite its natural setting, being "just 10 minutes from New Haven" is a significant logistical advantage. It provides easy access for attendees from various locations, simplifies supply runs, and offers the option of urban exploration or dining.
- Focus on Group Rentals: Unlike individual public campsites, Cedarcrest's primary focus on renting out the "whole place" or sections to groups creates a tailored experience, ensuring privacy and dedicated use of facilities for the renting party.
As a private camp and event rental facility, Camp Cedarcrest typically operates on a different pricing model than public campgrounds. Instead of advertising general promotions or discounts, their "offers" are usually structured around customizable rental packages based on the specific needs of the group or event.
Therefore, while specific "promotions" in the traditional sense might not be publicly listed, interested parties in Connecticut looking to book an event or group retreat should inquire directly about:
- Customized Rental Rates: Pricing is likely determined by factors such as the duration of the rental (e.g., weekend, week-long), the number of attendees, the specific facilities required (e.g., cabins, kitchen, pavilion), and the time of year.
- Package Deals: For larger or multi-day events like weddings or extended youth camps, they may offer comprehensive packages that bundle accommodation, facility usage, and potentially even some basic services.
- Off-Season Rates: Like many event venues, Camp Cedarcrest might offer more favorable rates during off-peak seasons (e.g., late fall, winter, early spring) compared to prime summer or holiday weekends.
- Non-Profit/Youth Group Discounts: Facilities often have special considerations or pricing for non-profit organizations, educational institutions, or youth groups, given their community-focused mission.
The best way to understand the cost and potential "offers" for your specific event or group size is to contact Camp Cedarcrest directly and discuss your requirements. They will be able to provide a tailored quote based on your needs.

For Connecticut residents, Camp Cedarcrest in Orange offers a uniquely suitable solution for a variety of group-focused needs, moving beyond the typical individual camping experience. Its primary strength lies in its ability to be rented out for exclusive use, providing privacy and a dedicated space for events like weddings, family reunions, youth camps, or corporate team-building retreats. This "whole place rented out" model ensures that your group has the run of the facilities, fostering a more cohesive and undisturbed experience.
The camp’s location is a significant advantage. Being just "10 minutes from New Haven" means it's incredibly accessible from across Connecticut, making travel convenient for attendees. This proximity to a major city also offers the best of both worlds: a serene, natural setting for your event, coupled with easy access to urban amenities, transportation hubs, and emergency services if needed.
Furthermore, the quality of its facilities, particularly the "nicer than other camp grounds" cabins and the "godsend" kitchen, elevates the comfort level for guests. Unique features like the "Fire Theatre" add a memorable touch to evening programs and social gatherings. While it may require "a little tidying up" at times, the overall consensus is that it's a "decent place to camp" and, more importantly, a fantastic venue for events. Camp Cedarcrest Reviews
Not your average camp ground... Came here for a wedding where the whole place was rented out. It's a very small and quaint camp ground. Could use a little tidying up but otherwise a decent place to camp. Wierd that it's just 10 minutes from New Haven and off a very busy bi-way. We enjoyed our stay here. There were showers and bathrooms of course and a cool pavilion where the reception was.
