For many Tennesseans, the call of the wild is a strong one, leading them to seek out peaceful retreats where they can reconnect with nature, enjoy the quiet, and perhaps cast a line into pristine waters. If you're someone who values affordability, a no-frills approach to camping, and a genuine escape from the constant buzz of modern life, then Bumpus Mills Campground might just be the hidden gem you've been searching for. Nestled in the tranquil community of Bumpus Mills, this campground offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Tennessee.
Bumpus Mills Campground is designed for those who prioritize a simple, back-to-nature camping experience. It's not about elaborate amenities or constant entertainment; rather, it's about providing a quiet, secure, and affordable base from which to enjoy the great outdoors. This makes it particularly appealing to anglers, hikers, and anyone looking to truly unplug and unwind. While some may seek high-tech hookups and extensive on-site activities, Bumpus Mills champions a more traditional camping ethos, where the primary attractions are the natural surroundings, the serene atmosphere, and the joy of simple pleasures like watching a stunning sunset.
Understanding what this campground offers, and what it doesn't, is key to appreciating its unique appeal. For locals in Tennessee, it represents a readily accessible option for a quick weekend escape or a longer, more contemplative retreat into the state's beautiful landscapes. Let's delve deeper into what makes Bumpus Mills Campground a noteworthy destination for your next outdoor adventure.
Bumpus Mills Campground is situated at 764 Forest Trail, Bumpus Mills, TN 37028, USA. This address places it in the quiet, rural community of Bumpus Mills, located in Stewart County, Tennessee. The setting is ideal for those seeking seclusion and a genuine "off-grid" experience, as noted by visitors.
While the campground offers a peaceful escape, it's important for prospective campers to understand its remote nature. The reviews indicate that phone service is virtually non-existent at the campground itself, requiring a drive of approximately 16 miles to find a signal. This highlights its suitability for those who truly wish to disconnect and embrace a digital detox. This lack of immediate connectivity contributes significantly to the tranquil and undisturbed atmosphere that many campers seek.
Despite its secluded feel, the campground is accessible via established roads, allowing RVs and campers to reach it. For those traveling from larger population centers in Tennessee, such as Clarksville or Nashville, the drive will lead you through scenic rural landscapes. The proximity to Fort Campbell, though not directly in the area, could make it a convenient, affordable, and quiet option for military families or personnel looking for a nearby escape.
While local amenities directly in Bumpus Mills might be limited, the purpose of this campground is not about urban convenience but about natural immersion. Campers should plan to bring most of their supplies or be prepared for a short drive to the nearest towns for groceries or other necessities. The remote location is precisely what makes the "fabulous sunsets" possible, free from light pollution and urban sprawl, offering a truly spectacular natural display.
Bumpus Mills Campground, as a "small affordable campground," focuses on providing fundamental services essential for a comfortable camping experience, rather than extensive resort-style amenities. Based on the customer reviews, the primary services offered include:
- Camping Sites: Designated sites for campers and RVs, likely including spaces for tents as well, though the reviews highlight RV compatibility with mentions of "parking."
- Restroom and Shower Facilities: A shower house is available for campers. However, it's noted that the cleanliness might vary, suggesting campers should be prepared for a more rustic experience in this regard.
- Affordable Rates: A key selling point for the campground is its affordability, making it an accessible option for various budgets.
- On-Site Host/Management: A host was present during check-in, indicating some level of on-site management to assist campers and provide information, such as preparing guests for potential site conditions (e.g., flooding).
- Pet-Friendly Environment: While not explicitly stated, small, no-frills campgrounds are often tolerant of pets, though specific rules should be confirmed.
It's important to note what is *not* prominently offered, based on the reviews: reliable phone service, extensive on-site activities beyond fishing, or consistently maintained common facilities like the shower house. Campers should set their expectations accordingly for a more independent and self-sufficient camping trip.
Bumpus Mills Campground, while a "no-frills" option, offers several distinct features and highlights that appeal to a specific type of camper:
- Affordability: This is a major draw for budget-conscious campers looking for an economical way to enjoy the outdoors.
- Seclusion and Peace: The campground is described as a "small" and "off-grid" place, implying a quiet, undisturbed environment far from urban noise and light pollution. This is perfect for relaxation and stargazing.
- Excellent Fishing Opportunities: "Great fishing" is consistently highlighted as a primary activity and a major draw for the campground, making it ideal for anglers. Its location likely provides access to a lake or river known for good catches.
- Fabulous Sunsets: The stunning sunsets are a significant highlight, offering breathtaking natural beauty and a memorable visual experience for campers. This indicates clear views and a peaceful setting for enjoying dusk.
- "Off-Grid" Experience: The lack of phone service (requiring a 16-mile drive to call out) is a key feature. For those looking to truly unplug and disconnect from digital distractions, this is an ideal environment to achieve a true digital detox.
- Specific Site Characteristics: The reviews note details like certain sites being prone to bugs or draining rain from upper sites. While these might seem like negatives, they also indicate transparency from the host about site conditions, allowing campers to choose or prepare accordingly.
- Local Exploration Potential: While not much "to do in the area but fish" is mentioned, this encourages campers to embrace the local natural environment and "explore outside of the campground" on their own terms.

The on-site host's transparency about site conditions, such as potential flooding or bugs, also indicates a practical approach to managing expectations, allowing campers to prepare adequately.
In conclusion, Bumpus Mills Campground is not for everyone, but for the Tennessee local who cherishes simplicity, solitude, great fishing, and the chance to truly unplug and enjoy the natural world without modern distractions, it is an ideal destination. It’s a place where the stars shine brighter, the air is fresher, and the rhythm of nature sets the pace for your perfect Tennessee outdoor adventure.

Bumpus Mills Campground Reviews
If you want a small affordable campground this is your place. The shower house could use for some regular cleaning. I’m not sure it was cleaned at all the time we were there. Not much to do in the area but fish unless you really want to explore outside of the campground.I learned after our time there our site is the worst with bugs. I thought the bugs were just extra because it had rained a lot but a friend told me to never book that site bc the bugs are always backs there. Our site also gets all the rain drained from the upper site. When we checked in the host did prepare us our site would flood for a few areas since rain was expected. The sunsets were fabulous!
Jun 13, 2024 · Beth LivingstonNo phone service at all, had to drive 16 miles to call out. Beautiful campground but you are off grid. Great fishing. Careful walking on wooden bridge, it rained and was slick.
Jun 04, 2025 · Carolyn RobinsonGreat little campground but dont plan on using the restrooms. Because they are beyond disgusting. The white urinals are filled with thousands of dead and living flies. So much that the urinals are nearly black. Id rather use a porta john then even go in there ever again. The views are insane though so if you have an rv you will be fine. But for anyone van/car camping bring a shovel. Went back to try to get a photo as proof but there was a 4in spider in one of the urinals, feeding on the fly buffet, so i noped out.
Jul 20, 2024 · Capt Red BeardThe host was really nice. The sites are a little close together but offer great views of the lake. Not much to do without a 30 minute drive so it is the perfect campground to set up kick back and relax. The only reason it doesn't get more stars is the latrines and showers. The company contracted to clean them only makes an effort at hosing the floors down and wiping the sinks. I know it is a campground but at least sweep up the bugs instead of hosing them to the corners.
Aug 07, 2023 · Edward RoyseGreat area to camp. Small campground, good sights. Needs work done to the showers and hot water flow. Been like this the last 4 times we've camped.
