It’s far enough to feel like a true escape, yet close enough to be a convenient destination for a spontaneous getaway or a planned family vacation. It's always advisable to check road conditions, especially during winter months, as mountain roads can be subject to closures due to snow or other weather-related events. Buckhorn Campground provides a range of essential services and facilities to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable camping experience. While it maintains a primitive feel, it offers key amenities that enhance your stay:
- Vault Toilets: The campground features well-maintained vault toilets, providing basic restroom facilities for campers. While not flush toilets, they are a standard and functional amenity in many national forest campgrounds.
- Running Water: A significant benefit at Buckhorn Campground is the availability of running water. This is a highly valued feature, particularly for drinking, cooking, and basic hygiene, elevating the camping experience beyond more primitive sites that lack this convenience.
- Picnic Tables: Each campsite is equipped with a sturdy picnic table, offering a designated and comfortable space for outdoor dining, food preparation, and gathering with your group.
- Fire Rings with Grill Grates: Every site includes a fire ring, complete with a grill grate. This allows campers to safely build campfires for warmth, ambiance, and, importantly, for cooking meals over an open flame. Always be sure to check current fire restrictions before lighting a fire.
- Designated Campsites: The campground offers clearly defined campsites, providing campers with their own space and a sense of privacy while still being part of a larger community.
Buckhorn Campground stands out due to several appealing features and highlights that enhance the overall camping experience for its visitors:
- Abundant Shade: Many sites at Buckhorn Campground are notably shady, providing a welcome respite from the California sun, especially during warmer months. This natural tree cover contributes to a cooler and more comfortable camping environment.
- Proximity to Creek: A significant highlight mentioned by visitors is the creek running directly through or very near campsites. This natural water feature adds to the serene ambiance, provides a soothing sound, and is often a delightful attraction for children to explore and play near.
- Good Hiking Access: The campground offers excellent access to nearby hiking trails. A notable example is the hike to Cooper Canyon Falls, which is frequently praised by campers. These trails provide opportunities for exploration, exercise, and experiencing the natural beauty of the San Gabriel Mountains.
- Wildlife Viewing Opportunities: Campers often report sightings of local wildlife, including bluejays, squirrels, and quail. This adds an exciting element to the outdoor experience, offering chances to observe native California fauna in their natural habitat.
- Friendly and Respectful Atmosphere: Reviews indicate that Buckhorn Campground fosters a positive and respectful atmosphere among campers. Many families choose this location, contributing to a community-oriented environment where visitors are mindful of each other's space.
- Primitive Charm with Key Amenities: While described as a "primitive campground," the presence of running water significantly elevates its offerings compared to truly primitive sites. This blend provides a rustic experience without sacrificing essential comforts.
- Quiet Weekend Camping: For those seeking a tranquil escape, Buckhorn Campground is often noted as an ideal spot for a quiet weekend camping trip, away from the noise and distractions of urban areas.
- Zero Cell Phone Reception: It's important to note that a significant highlight for many looking to truly disconnect is the lack of cell phone reception for miles around the campground. This allows for a genuine digital detox and a deeper immersion in nature.

Buckhorn Campground Reviews
Just got back from a trip to buckhorn. Great campground very shady in many sites. We got to camp at about noon on a friday and there were still a handful of spots available to choose from. Lots of families camping and everyone we noticed was friendly and respecting of other's space. nothing really to say about the vault toilets they are what they are but the running water is a real benefit. good hike from camp and the creek running in the middle is a nice attraction for kids.
Jun 15, 2025 · Akil HarrisLovely primitive Campground. The Campground was clean with beautiful views. There is zero cell phone reception for miles, and a creek came right past our campsite. Lots of bugs in the summer but they didn't really bother us. Only vault toilets and no water on site. Each campground has a picnic table and fire ring with a grill grate. The nearby hike to Cooper Canyon Falls was really nice. There are bluejays and squirrels and we saw a quail on the hike. I will definitely be returning here for quiet weekend camping.

Turn left on Angeles Crest Scenic Byway (Highway 2)Highway 2 from La is now open, detour unnecessary unless coming from Palmdale, Wrightwood side.
Jun 03, 2025 · Alexandra LozanoIt's only a 45 minute drive from where I live and about an hour from Glendale CA, I've been camping there since 1985 it's a first-come first-serve there is no reservation so leave early to get a campground there are hiking trails there is a waterfall that you can hike down to, I've also mountain bike the trails. All in all Buckhorn is one of my most favorite campgrounds in the Angeles national Forest, it's a dog friendly area as long as they're on a leash.
Oct 03, 2023 · Hovik MossessiGreat site. Very peaceful, a little noisy near night fall. Warm in the day cold at night. Most people kept to themselves! Best time for us to go was Tuesday through Thursday. Water was nice tasting too! Might be a bit buggy for some. Bees love to eat off your plate. And the squirrels are fun to watch. Bring lots of fire wood as the area seems cleaned out.
