Brooks Lake Campground

Campground, Boat ramp ★4.0

Shoshone national Forest, Brooks Lake Rd, Dubois, WY 82513, USA

4.0
Beautiful place, but Google Maps route is ***WRONG*** and will route you on a logging road that is dangerous for most vehicles. Off 26, there is a sign pointing to Brooks Lake and that is the correct road. There is some wash board, but it's not bad. I'll update this review as soon as Google corrects it. Bears are currently (July 9th) not in the area although we have a fox that visits in the evening. - Kurt Guenther

The beauty of Brooks Lake Campground is consistently praised by those who visit. Campers rave about the stunning views from almost every campsite, whether they are of the lake, the surrounding mountains, or the open sky. Even on a busy holiday weekend, the campground doesn't feel crowded, which is a major plus for those who prefer peace and quiet. Brooks Lake Campground is located at Brooks Lake Rd, Dubois, WY 82513, USA, within the Shoshone National Forest. Its elevation of 9,200 feet places it in a stunning alpine environment. A crucial piece of information for visitors is to be cautious with navigation apps. As one review strongly warns, Google Maps may provide a "WRONG" and "dangerous" route via a logging road. The correct and recommended route is to take US 26/287 north from Dubois for about 23 miles, then turn onto Forest Road 515, which is well-marked with a sign pointing to Brooks Lake. This road is a gravel surface with some washboarding but is generally manageable for most vehicles. The campground is about 4.5 miles from this turnoff.

The campground's location offers a perfect jumping-off point for exploring the greater area. Its proximity to the Brooks Lake Lodge and nearby ranches adds to the unique local flavor, with the sound of horses from a ranch up the hill occasionally heard. The area is known for its beautiful high-country scenery and is an ideal location for those looking to explore the Wind River Ranger District.

Brooks Lake Campground provides several key services and amenities for a comfortable stay.

  • RV and Tent Sites: The campground hosts 13 sites, with accommodations for both RVs and tents. There are also specific pull-through sites available for trailers.

  • Public Restrooms: The campground is equipped with public restrooms, which are vault toilets. These are a basic but necessary amenity in a remote national forest setting.

  • Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each campsite is in good shape and comes with a picnic table and a fire ring, perfect for cooking meals and gathering with family and friends. Bear boxes are also provided at each site for safe food storage.

  • Boat Ramp: For those who enjoy boating, there is a boat ramp on-site, providing easy access to Brooks Lake for a variety of water activities. This is a major highlight for anyone who enjoys fishing or paddling.

  • Dogs Allowed: The campground is a pet-friendly location, allowing you to bring your furry friends along for the adventure. This makes it an ideal spot for those who travel with their dogs.

Brooks Lake Campground is packed with features and highlights that make it a compelling choice for local campers.

  • Hiking Opportunities: The campground is a great base for hiking. As a reviewer noted, there are "kid-friendly hikes" in the area, as well as a variety of trails that lead to other recreational lakes and to the Washakie Wilderness. The area's trail system offers opportunities for all skill levels.

  • World-Class Fishing: The streams and lakes in the area are known for their pristine fishing, with a variety of trout species including rainbow, brook, splake, and lake trout. The easy access to the lake from the campground's boat ramp makes it a prime spot for anglers.

  • Good for Kids: The combination of gentle hikes, opportunities for wildlife viewing, and the open space of the campground makes it "good for kids." It's a place where children can explore and engage with nature in a safe and memorable way.

  • Abundant Wildlife: While a reviewer mentioned not seeing much large wildlife, the area is known for its abundance of critters and birds, and can be home to larger animals like grizzly bears and moose. It is "bear country," so practicing safe food storage is a must.

  • First-Come, First-Serve: The campground operates on a first-come, first-serve basis, which adds to its authentic, non-commercial feel. It's a great option for locals who want to spontaneously head out for a weekend trip.

Choosing Brooks Lake Campground for your next camping trip is an excellent decision for anyone looking for a truly beautiful and classic Wyoming experience. The most compelling reason to choose it is the stunning scenery. The views of the lake, the mountains, and the open sky are a constant source of wonder. The peaceful and uncrowded atmosphere, even during a popular holiday weekend, is a testament to its location and character. It allows you to feel like you have a piece of the wilderness to yourself.

Another major factor is the wealth of recreational activities available. The combination of excellent fishing, a boat ramp, and a network of kid-friendly and more challenging hikes makes it a perfect base for an active outdoor vacation.
