Boulder Group Campground is more than just a place to pitch multiple tents; it's an opportunity to truly disconnect and immerse yourselves in the serene beauty of the Southern California wilderness. You and your friends or family will be far enough from other campers not to be bothered, allowing for lively conversations around the campfire, shared meals under the stars, and the freedom to truly enjoy your company without feeling cramped or overlooked.
What makes this campground particularly appealing for locals is its balance of accessibility to the general Big Bear Lake area with its highly secluded setting. However, it's important to note that this level of seclusion and natural beauty comes with a few considerations, particularly regarding access and wildlife. We'll dive into the specifics of what makes Boulder Group Campground such a fantastic option for your next California adventure, from how to get there to what amenities await you, and what to expect once you arrive. Get ready to discover a new favorite spot for creating lasting memories in the great outdoors!
Boulder Group Campground is nestled in the San Bernardino National Forest, accessible from Mill Creek Rd, Angelus Oaks, CA 92305, USA. Its location places it on a ridge south of Big Bear Lake, offering a truly immersive mountain environment that feels wonderfully remote while still being within reach for many Southern Californians.
Accessibility to Boulder Group Campground is a key point highlighted by previous visitors, and it's essential to plan accordingly. The road to the campsite is described as a "dirt road" that is "a bit rough," about "a mile or two" long, and features "lots of rocks." While some visitors have managed to make it up with a front-wheel-drive (FWD) vehicle by driving "really carefully," it is strongly recommended to "bring an SUV or Truck if you can" or, more generally, a "higher clearance vehicle." This is crucial for navigating the bumpy and rocky terrain comfortably and safely.
Despite the challenging access road, the effort is consistently deemed "worth it" by campers. The difficult access contributes significantly to the campground's defining feature: its seclusion. Once you arrive, you and your group will be "far enough from other campers not to really be bothered by anyone." This privacy is a major draw for groups seeking a peaceful and undisturbed retreat in nature. The journey itself becomes part of the adventure, leading you to a hidden gem in the forest.
While the campground feels remote, it's located within the broader Big Bear Lake area, meaning that basic services and attractions are not excessively far. However, it's wise to come prepared with all your necessary supplies, as immediate access to stores or gas stations will require driving back down the dirt road and into a town. The rugged access is a trade-off for the unparalleled solitude and natural beauty that Boulder Group Campground offers.
Boulder Group Campground is designed to provide a back-to-basics group camping experience with essential facilities to ensure a comfortable stay in a natural setting:
Spacious Group Site: The campground can accommodate up to 40 people and 8 vehicles, providing ample space for large gatherings to spread out comfortably.
Picnic Tables: The site is equipped with 5 picnic tables, offering convenient surfaces for meal preparation, dining, and group activities.
Double Pedestal Grill: A large grill is provided, perfect for group barbecues and cooking over charcoal.
Group Fire Ring: A dedicated fire ring allows for communal campfires, ideal for storytelling, warmth, and marshmallow roasting (always check for current fire restrictions before lighting a fire).
Vault Toilets: Basic vault toilets are available on-site for restroom facilities.
Bear Boxes: Critically important for this area, bear boxes are provided for safe food storage. Campers are strongly advised to utilize these to protect their food and minimize human-wildlife encounters, especially given reported bear sightings.
Shade from Trees: The campground features great trees that provide ample shade, offering respite from the sun during warmer days.
It's important to note that drinking water is not available at the campground, and there is no trash collection service (pack in / pack out policy). Campers should come prepared with their own water supply and be ready to pack out all trash to help maintain the pristine environment.
Boulder Group Campground offers several compelling features and highlights that make it a premier choice for groups seeking an authentic mountain camping experience in California:
Exceptional Seclusion and Privacy: This is perhaps the biggest draw. Despite its capacity for large groups, the campground is strategically located and accessed via a rough dirt road, ensuring that you and your group will be "far enough from other campers not to really be bothered by anyone." This unparalleled privacy creates a truly immersive and peaceful outdoor experience.
Affordable Group Camping: Visitors note that the campground is "adorably priced for the size of the group it can accommodate," offering excellent value for large gatherings looking for a budget-friendly option without compromising on space or natural beauty.
Ample Space for Large Groups: With the ability to host up to 40 people and 8 vehicles, there’s plenty of room for multiple tents, gathering areas, and activities, preventing that cramped feeling often found in smaller campgrounds.
Beautiful Natural Setting with Shade: The campground boasts "great trees for some shade," providing comfortable areas even on sunny days. The surrounding San Bernardino National Forest offers picturesque views and a true sense of being in the heart of nature.
Access to Hiking Trails and Exploration: Campers can explore "lots of trails...just by walking around the campsite." This offers easy access to nature walks and more extensive hiking opportunities directly from your campsite, perfect for those who love to wander and discover.
Wildlife Viewing Opportunities: While requiring awareness, the presence of wildlife, including bear sightings, offers a unique opportunity to observe animals in their natural habitat. The provided bear boxes are a crucial tool for responsible wildlife interaction.
Stargazing: Given its remote location and minimal light pollution, Boulder Group Campground offers spectacular opportunities for stargazing, providing a breathtaking view of the night sky.
These highlights, combined with the rustic amenities, make Boulder Group Campground an ideal destination for groups prioritizing privacy, space, natural beauty, and a touch of adventure.

For Californians eager to gather their tribe for an affordable, private, and authentically wild mountain camping adventure, Boulder Group Campground is not just an option; it's an invitation to create unforgettable memories in a truly spectacular setting. Boulder Group Campground Reviews
A spectacular place to get a group together for a perfect camping experience! The group sure was adorable priced for The side of the group it can accommodate as well as the proximity to neighbors. Almost didn't know anyone else was on the mountain! Plenty of places for large teens and great trees for some shade. Access is kind of fun, just bring a higher clearance vehicle! Will definitely be back here next year!
Jul 03, 2019 · Justin HendersonHad a lot of fun with my group of friends here. The road to get here is a bit rough though. About a mile or two of dirt road to get to the campsite with lots of rocks. A FWD can make it up, just have to drive really carefully! Definitely would bring an SUV or Truck if you can though. Once you get to the campground though, you and your group will be far enough from other campers not to really be bothered by anyone. There are lots of trails you can explore yourself just by walking around the campsite with lots of shade.*Be warned though, we did see a bear both mornings we were here. Make sure to take advantage of the bear boxes provided.*
