Bodine Field Campground is strategically located at 31, Atsion Batsto Rd, Hammonton, NJ 08037, USA. This address places it firmly within the vast and ecologically unique Pinelands National Reserve, often referred to as the New Jersey Pine Barrens. This region is a true natural treasure, covering more than one million acres across the southern part of the state, characterized by its distinctive cedar water rivers, pine-oak forests, and sandy soils. The campground’s location deep within this preserve ensures an authentic wilderness experience, far removed from urban sprawl.
Despite its immersive natural setting, Bodine Field Campground remains remarkably accessible for New Jersey locals. Hammonton, the nearest town, serves as a gateway to the Pinelands and is well-connected by state highways, making travel to the campground relatively straightforward from various parts of the Garden State. Major routes like the Atlantic City Expressway and U.S. Route 30 provide convenient access from areas such as Philadelphia, Atlantic City, and other southern and central New Jersey towns. While the drive takes you into a more secluded environment, the journey itself is often scenic, preparing visitors for the natural beauty that awaits. This balance of being deeply embedded in nature while maintaining reasonable accessibility makes Bodine Field an ideal spot for New Jersey residents seeking a quick escape to the wilderness without extensive travel, allowing them to truly experience the best of what the Pine Barrens has to offer.
Bodine Field Campground, with its emphasis on natural and unadorned beauty, provides a more rustic and open-ended camping experience compared to highly developed resorts. Based on the customer reviews, the services and provisions are geared towards facilitating a direct and authentic engagement with the Pine Barrens environment.
- Open Camping Space: The campground is described as "Just a big open space good for group camping." This suggests that rather than strictly defined individual sites with extensive amenities, it offers expansive areas where groups can set up camp, fostering a communal and flexible camping style. This is ideal for organizations, friends, or large families looking to camp together.
- Fire Rings/Areas: The comment "Had a fire to cook dinner" strongly implies the availability of designated fire rings or areas where campers can safely build campfires for cooking and warmth. This is a fundamental element of the traditional camping experience.
- Water Access & Recreation: A significant highlight is the direct access to natural water bodies. The "Wading River runs by the camp" and there's a "Beautiful cedar water creek with swimming holes, rope swings and landings for canoes/kayaks." This indicates that campers have direct access to natural swimming areas and points from which to launch non-motorized watercraft for paddling and exploration.
- Natural Environment for Activities: While not a 'service' in the traditional sense, the campground inherently offers the 'service' of a preserved natural environment conducive to a variety of outdoor activities. This includes opportunities for hiking, nature observation, and the general enjoyment of the serene Pine Barrens landscape.
- Self-Reliance Encouraged: The nature of the reviews suggests that Bodine Field is a more primitive camping experience. This means campers should be prepared to be largely self-sufficient, bringing their own supplies, water, and waste management solutions, as highly developed facilities (like modern restrooms or showers) are not explicitly mentioned in the positive feedback, implying a focus on the natural elements.
The core offering of Bodine Field Campground is its raw, natural setting, providing the necessary basic provisions for a genuine outdoor adventure focused on enjoying the unique ecology of the Pine Barrens.

Jun 24, 2020 · Kevin KBodine Field campground was the perfect camping stop before heading down to Cape May for vacation. Make sure you reserve a site on the park's website beforehand. This particular campground had a bit of a bumpy dirt road drive to get to it, so be conscious of your vehicles' abilities. The pit toilet was fairly clean and I liked the distance between campsites. There was a bit of trash in the firepit when I arrived and the fire pit looked like it was run over. But! I simply took the trash with me when I left and notified the park staff about the firepit and they informed maintenance would take care of it. Camp neighbors took a bit to quiet down, but I had some very restful sleep and enjoyed the NJ pine barrens. Would have loved to go for a swim in the river if I had the time. Check this place out!
Aug 01, 2022 · Ronnie HeldThis is a great place for a brief getaway. I took my 11 year old daughter just so we could "unplug" for 24 hours. It was time well spent! We only live about a half hour away from Wharton State Forest and we hope to be back several times this year!
Apr 08, 2022 · Michael MylesGreat spot. Very peaceful and calm. Spaces are a nice size to allow you to spread out at little. Pit toilets. Some of them could use a little attention. Pump water
