We stayed 3 nights here and enjoyed the new campground. It was very quiet, both in regards to other campers and highway noise. We were on the full hookups area. There are no shade trees but using our awning helped. We loved the convenience of the location, easy to explore the North Shore from this home base. Walking to the amazing Black Beach was easy. Our 3 grandchildren enjoyed crawling on the borders and swimming at Black Beach. There only complaint was the playground had very little to do.We will definitely return! - Diane Kestner

Black Beach Municipal Campground is ideally situated at 200 W Lakeview Dr, Silver Bay, MN 55614, USA. This location places it squarely on Minnesota's renowned North Shore, nestled between the scenic Highway 61 and the stunning Black Beach Park. For Minnesotans traveling from the Twin Cities or other parts of the state, accessing Silver Bay is a straightforward and picturesque drive along Highway 61, often regarded as one of the most beautiful drives in the country. The campground itself is easy to find within Silver Bay, making for a smooth arrival.

The convenience of its location is a major draw. Silver Bay acts as an excellent central hub for exploring the entire North Shore. From the campground, you have easy access to a wealth of natural attractions and charming towns. It's centrally located between four popular State Parks – Gooseberry Falls, Split Rock Lighthouse, Tettegouche, and Temperance River State Parks – all within a short driving distance. This means you can spend your days hiking, exploring lighthouses, or marveling at waterfalls, and return to a comfortable and familiar base each evening. The ability to easily walk to the unique Black Beach, a natural wonder known for its dark, sparkling sand, is another significant advantage that locals cherish. While some initial roadway finishing may still be underway, leading to minor navigation adjustments, the overall access and convenience of Black Beach Municipal Campground are consistently highlighted by visitors as a major benefit for exploring our beloved North Shore.

Black Beach Municipal Campground offers a range of services designed to make your camping experience comfortable and convenient, catering to both RV and tent campers.

  • Variety of Campsite Options: The campground boasts 49 sites across 14.5 acres. Guests can choose from various site types, including full hookup sites (20/30/50 amp electric, water, and sewer), electric-only sites (20/30 amp), and pull-through sites to accommodate larger RVs. Each site includes a picnic table and a fire ring with a grill grate.
  • Clean Restrooms and Shower Facilities: The main building houses well-maintained lavatories and bathing units, including hot showers. Campers appreciate the cleanliness of these facilities, providing a welcome comfort after a day of outdoor activities. Vault toilets are also available near some sites.
  • Potable Water Station: While full hookup sites provide direct water, a potable water station is available for those needing to fill their tanks or for tent campers. It's worth noting that one past review mentioned low water flow at the pump, so planning accordingly or filling up before arrival might be wise for large RV tanks, though issues can be temporary.
  • Free Wi-Fi: The campground offers free Wi-Fi access, allowing campers to stay connected, plan their North Shore adventures, or simply relax with some digital entertainment.
  • On-Site Firewood Sales: For those cozy campfires, firewood bundles are available for purchase directly at the campground, making it convenient to enjoy a crackling fire without needing to bring your own.
  • Pet-Friendly Policy: Black Beach Municipal Campground welcomes pets, making it easier for Minnesotans to bring their beloved furry companions along for the adventure. Pets must be registered, leashed when outdoors, and not left unattended.
  • Helpful and Understanding Staff: Reviews frequently praise the helpfulness and understanding nature of the staff, particularly at check-in. This contributes significantly to a positive guest experience, addressing concerns and providing assistance as needed.

Black Beach Municipal Campground offers a wealth of features and highlights that make it a compelling destination for Minnesotans exploring the North Shore.

  • Direct Access to Black Beach Park: One of the campground's most outstanding features is its direct walking access to the unique Black Beach Park on the shores of Lake Superior. This stunning beach, known for its dark, sparkling sand created by taconite tailings, offers opportunities for swimming, relaxing, and enjoying the Lake Superior shoreline.
  • Proximity to North Shore Attractions: Its location is a strategic home base for exploring the best of the North Shore. As mentioned, it's centrally located to four popular state parks – Temperance River, Tettegouche, Gooseberry Falls, and Split Rock Lighthouse. This allows for easy day trips to iconic waterfalls, historic lighthouses, and countless scenic overlooks.
  • Connectivity to Major Trails: The campground offers direct access to a variety of local and state trail systems, including the Superior Hiking Trail and Gitchi Gami Bike Trail. For ATV enthusiasts, there's also direct access to state ATV trails right from your campsite. This makes it an ideal spot for hikers, bikers, and riders.
  • New and Well-Maintained Facilities: As a newer campground (opened in 2020), Black Beach Municipal Campground features modern, clean facilities. Reviewers consistently highlight the cleanliness of the sites, restrooms, and showers, contributing to a comfortable stay.
  • Spacious and Level Sites: The campsites are noted for being large, level, and mostly gravel, making them easy to navigate for RVs of all sizes, including pull-through options for very large rigs. While shade trees are still young, the generous site dimensions and clean gravel pads are appreciated.
  • Family-Friendly Amenities: The campground includes a playground for children, though some reviews suggest it has limited equipment. Nevertheless, it provides a dedicated space for younger campers to enjoy. The walking distance to Black Beach also makes it easy for families to spend time by the water.
  • Quiet Atmosphere: Despite being near Highway 61, many campers report that the campground is surprisingly quiet, both in terms of highway noise and activity from other campers. This provides a peaceful setting for relaxation.
