Bitterbrush Campground

4.0
We ended up staying at this campground because the road to Sabrina lake was still closed. We enjoyed staying here it was not full, but we felt like we had plenty of privacy. The creek running through the campground is beautiful and it is running very high this year. We were told the area is known for great fishing, but we didn't have a chance to test that out this trip. The campground isn't connected to a trail system, so it does require a drive to get to a good hike. - Toby Sagara

Introduction / Overview

For Californians seeking a peaceful and picturesque retreat into the heart of the Eastern Sierra, Bitterbrush Campground in Bishop, CA, presents an ideal option. Nestled within the stunning natural beauty of the region, this campground offers a comfortable and private camping experience, making it a fantastic choice for those looking to unwind amidst nature's embrace. While sometimes chosen as an alternative due to road closures to higher elevations, its inherent charm and amenities quickly establish it as a preferred destination in its own right. With a beautiful creek running through it and the promise of incredible stargazing, Bitterbrush Campground provides a serene base for exploring the rich outdoor offerings of the Bishop area and the broader Inyo National Forest.

This campground strikes a balance between accessibility and a sense of seclusion, providing campers with "plenty of privacy" even when not at full capacity. It caters to those who appreciate basic comforts in a natural setting, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the tranquility of the mountains. Whether your interest lies in the famed fishing opportunities of Bishop Creek, simply relaxing by the water, or marveling at a sky full of stars, Bitterbrush Campground offers a welcoming and memorable experience for all its guests.

Location and Accessibility

Bitterbrush Campground is conveniently located at 168 Bishop Creek Camp Rd, Bishop, CA 93514, USA. This address places it squarely within the renowned Bishop Creek Canyon area, a highly popular destination in the Eastern Sierra known for its stunning scenery, world-class fishing, and proximity to higher Sierra lakes and trailheads. Bishop, a vibrant town in Inyo County, serves as a central hub for visitors to the Eastern Sierra, offering a variety of services, shops, and restaurants.

Accessibility to Bitterbrush Campground is generally straightforward. Bishop Creek Road provides direct access, making it manageable for various vehicle types, including RVs and trailers. The campground's location at a lower elevation within the canyon means it often opens earlier in the season and remains accessible later than some of the higher-elevation campgrounds, offering a longer camping window. While it might sometimes serve as an alternative when roads to locations like Sabrina Lake are closed, its easy approachability and pleasant environment make it a destination of choice. It's important to note that while the campground itself is comfortable, direct access to a "good hike" typically "does require a drive," indicating that trailheads might not be immediately adjacent to the campsites. However, the scenic drives within Bishop Creek Canyon are an experience in themselves, leading to numerous recreational opportunities just a short distance away.

  • No Hookups: As is common with many national forest campgrounds in the Eastern Sierra, Bitterbrush typically does not offer RV hookups (electrical, water, sewer). Campers should be prepared for dry camping.
