Bill Frederick Park Family Campground

4.0
This would be a five star location if it wasn’t for the traffic noise and the fact that the beautiful pool was closed when we arrived. There are nice walking trails and paved bike paths all around the park. It has a nice disc golf course where lots of people were playing. Our campsite was fairly large, but the sand had washed over the paved RV spot so our shoes were pretty sandy every time we came in of our camper. We stayed insight 18 which had full hook ups, 50 amp power, and 50 psi of water. We recommend staying in the inner circle of the RV loop. Our friends stayed in the outer circle in the wooded area and had cockroach problems when they woke up.A note to any of our EV friends, it isn’t cool to charge your vehicle from a neighboring site. That’s stealing from the park. I’m pretty sure most people wouldn’t plug their car into their neighbors house just because they weren’t home. - Steve Thomson

Bill Frederick Park Family Campground Introduce

For Floridians living in or visiting Central Florida, the idea of finding a tranquil escape amidst the bustling energy of Orlando might seem contradictory. Yet, Bill Frederick Park Family Campground, often referred to as Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake, offers exactly that: a remarkable 183-acre urban oasis providing a serene natural setting just minutes from the city's world-famous attractions. This city-owned park is a versatile destination, catering to nature lovers, active families, and RV enthusiasts alike. It’s a place where you can enjoy the peace of the outdoors without sacrificing convenience, making it a compelling choice for locals seeking a quick getaway or an affordable base for exploring Orlando. This article will provide a detailed look at what makes Bill Frederick Park Family Campground a unique and highly suitable option for you, our fellow Florida residents.

Bill Frederick Park Family Campground is officially located at 3401 South Hiawassee Road, Orlando, FL 32835, USA. While the provided Plus Code (GG2F+WC) points to its exact location within the larger park, the physical address is key for navigation. Its placement in Orlando, just a short drive from major highways like I-4 and Florida's Turnpike, makes it incredibly accessible from almost anywhere in Florida. From downtown Orlando, it's a relatively easy drive, typically taking 15-20 minutes depending on traffic. Critically, the park boasts strategic proximity to Orlando's renowned theme parks – including Universal Studios, Walt Disney World, and SeaWorld – making it an ideal alternative to hotel lodging for those visiting these attractions. This location allows campers to enjoy the tranquility of nature after a day of excitement. Upon arrival, there's a daily park entry fee ($5 per car, or $2 for driver only), which is separate from camping fees. The campground itself is tucked away within the larger park, often requiring a drive through the day-use areas to reach the RV and tent sites. This internal placement helps to mitigate some of the nearby city noise, especially for sites located deeper within the camping loop. The accessibility to surrounding amenities like grocery stores and dining options further enhances its convenience for local campers.

Bill Frederick Park Family Campground offers a comprehensive range of services and facilities, designed to provide a comfortable and engaging camping experience for various types of visitors.

  • RV Campsites with Full Hookups: The park features 36 RV campsites, with many offering full hookups, including 30/50 amp electric, water (often with good pressure, e.g., 50 psi), and sewer connections. Paved RV pads are available, though some may experience sand accumulation from nearby natural areas.
  • Tent Camping Sites: For those who prefer a more traditional camping experience, the park also offers spacious tent camping sites, providing a more rustic alternative to RV spots or cabins.
  • Cabins for Rent: Five rental cabins are available, offering a more comfortable "glamping" option for those without an RV or tent, or for groups seeking indoor shelter. These typically include AC/heat, outdoor grills, and access to restrooms and showers.
  • Clean Restrooms and Hot Showers: The park provides well-maintained restroom and shower facilities. While one review mentioned them as "old" but "usable" with good shower pressure, others highlight them as generally clean, ensuring comfort for campers.
  • Swimming Pool: A significant amenity, the park features a swimming pool. It's noted as a city pool with lifeguards, accessible to campers. However, it's important to check its operational status, as it has been noted to be closed during certain periods.
  • Laundry Facilities: Laundry services are available, reportedly at an affordable rate (e.g., $1.25 per wash and dry), which is a great convenience for longer stays.
  • Picnic Tables and Barbecue Grills: Each campsite typically includes a picnic table and barbecue grill, allowing for enjoyable outdoor cooking and dining experiences.
  • Sanitary Dump Station: For RVers, a dump station is conveniently located near the exit for grey and black water disposal, especially useful for sites that may only have partial hookups.
  • Pet-Friendly Environment: The park generally welcomes pets, although they must be kept on a leash. This makes it a great option for Floridians who want to bring their furry companions along.

Bill Frederick Park Family Campground is rich with features and highlights that cater to a wide range of interests, solidifying its reputation as a true recreational hub in Orlando:

  • Extensive Walking and Paved Bike Paths: The park boasts miles of well-maintained walking trails and paved bike paths that wind around Turkey Lake and through diverse habitats. These trails are perfect for leisurely strolls, invigorating runs, or family bike rides, offering a fantastic way to explore the park's natural beauty.
  • Premier Disc Golf Course: Home to a highly-rated disc golf course, the park attracts many enthusiasts. It's a popular spot for both casual play and more serious rounds, adding a unique recreational element.
  • Turkey Lake Access and Fishing: Situated along the shores of Turkey Lake, one of Florida's top-five rated fishing lakes, the park offers excellent fishing opportunities. There's a fishing pier and boat rentals (canoes/kayaks) available, allowing visitors to explore the lake.
  • Diverse Natural Environment: Despite its urban setting, the park provides a valuable natural preserve with rolling hills, scrub forest, and marshy lake shores. This environment supports various local wildlife and bird species, making it a great spot for nature observation and birdwatching.
  • Children's Farm and Playgrounds: For families with younger children, the park includes a charming children's farm with barnyard animals and multiple playground areas, ensuring there's always something to keep the little ones entertained.
  • Proximity to Theme Parks and Shopping: A major draw is its convenient location just minutes from Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, SeaWorld, and various shopping destinations. This allows campers to easily balance outdoor relaxation with exciting attractions.
  • Affordable Rates: Compared to other lodging options in Orlando, Bill Frederick Park offers incredibly competitive and affordable rates for its RV and tent sites, providing excellent value for money.
  • Unique "Inner Circle" RV Loop: Based on reviewer recommendations, staying in the inner circle of the RV loop is advised, suggesting a quieter experience and potentially fewer issues with sand or pests compared to outer, more wooded sites.
  • Other Recreational Amenities: The park also includes sports courts (like sand volleyball), picnic pavilions (some with lake views and near the pool), a dedicated drone flying area with charging stations, and opportunities for horse boarding.
