They serve as a base for exploring local natural attractions, engaging in recreational activities, or simply unwinding in a natural setting.
Big Sandy Campground positions itself as a destination for those seeking an outdoor experience. It's important for potential visitors to understand that while camping offers a connection to nature, the quality of amenities and the overall atmosphere can vary significantly from one campground to another. Customer feedback for Big Sandy Campground suggests a more rustic and less formal environment, with an emphasis on personal responsibility for conduct within the park. This might appeal to campers who prefer a less structured camping experience.
Big Sandy Campground is located at 4035 S Berkey Southern Rd, Swanton, OH 43558, USA. Swanton is a village primarily located in Fulton County, Ohio, with a small portion extending into Lucas County. This area is situated in Northwest Ohio, characterized by its flat, agricultural landscapes, and proximity to major urban centers like Toledo.
The campground's location provides reasonable accessibility for campers traveling from various parts of Northwest Ohio and beyond. S Berkey Southern Road is a local route, but its connection to broader road networks allows for straightforward travel. Given its rural setting, personal vehicle use is essential for reaching and navigating around the campground and surrounding areas.
For those traveling from Toledo, the campground is a relatively short drive, offering a convenient escape without requiring extensive travel. While Swanton itself is a smaller community, it provides basic services such as gas stations and local stores. For more extensive shopping, dining, or specialized services, Toledo is within easy reach. Campgrounds typically offer a range of services to facilitate a comfortable stay for campers, though the level of service can vary. Based on common campground provisions and implied information from customer reviews, Big Sandy Campground likely provides the following:
- Camping Lots/Sites: The fundamental service is the provision of designated spaces for RVs (recreational vehicles) and/or tents. These sites may vary in size and amenities (e.g., hookups for water, electricity, sewer).
- Access to Water Hookups: While not explicitly stated, most RV and some tent sites offer access to water connections for fresh water supply.
- Access to Electrical Hookups: Similarly, electrical hookups (e.g., 30 amp, 50 amp) are standard for RV sites and can be available at some tent sites, allowing for power supply.
- Restroom Facilities: Campgrounds typically provide communal restroom facilities. However, customer feedback for Big Sandy Campground specifically notes issues with the cleanliness and condition of the bathrooms, mentioning "really disgusting" conditions, a "SMALL shower curtain for the door" in one stall, and broken locks on others.
- Waste Management: Facilities for trash disposal are usually provided, allowing campers to manage their waste responsibly.
- Recreational Pond/Swimming Area: The campground reportedly features a "swimming pond." However, customer feedback describes it as "horrible" with "gross things in the water," causing immediate eye irritation.
Prospective campers should contact Big Sandy Campground directly to confirm the availability and condition of specific services and hookups for their desired camping style (tent vs. RV).
Big Sandy Campground offers certain characteristics that define the camping experience within its grounds. Based on the provided information, the key features and customer feedback highlights are as follows:
- Camping Environment: The campground provides spaces for outdoor enthusiasts to set up their tents or park their RVs, offering a location for a natural escape in Swanton, Ohio.
- Recreational Pond: A swimming pond is a noted feature, designed for water activities. However, it's crucial for prospective campers to be aware of the severe negative feedback regarding its cleanliness and safety, with reports of "gross things in the water" and immediate eye irritation.
- Playground Area: The campground has a playground for children. Unfortunately, customer reviews indicate it is "falling apart," suggesting it may not be in safe or usable condition.
- Rules on Speed and Pets: The campground enforces a 5 mph speed limit. There are also strict rules regarding dogs, with reports of aggressive enforcement and threats regarding barking, even for dogs contained within a fenced area or camper. This indicates the campground may not be "dog or kid friendly," as per customer reviews.
- Rustic/Informal Atmosphere: The general tone of the reviews suggests a less formal and potentially more rustic camping experience, where strict adherence to specific rules (like speed limits) is heavily monitored by permanent campers, and interactions with management can be confrontational.
- Poor Maintenance: Recurring themes in reviews point to issues with general maintenance, including "super long grass in most spots" and "bad" potholes in the roads.
These features, particularly in light of customer feedback, suggest that Big Sandy Campground might appeal to a very specific type of camper who is aware of and comfortable with a less manicured environment and potentially challenging interactions.
As a campground, Big Sandy Campground's pricing structure typically revolves around daily or nightly rates for camping sites, with potential discounts for extended stays (e.g., weekly or monthly rates) or seasonal passes. However, based on the provided information, there are no specific "promotions or special offers" advertised for Big Sandy Campground.
Prospective campers interested in current pricing, any available discounts for longer stays, or specific booking terms should contact Big Sandy Campground directly. It is always recommended to inquire about all fees upfront, including any charges for additional occupants, pets, or specific hookup requirements, to ensure a clear understanding of the total cost of your stay. For locals in Ohio, particularly those in the Northwest region near Swanton, Big Sandy Campground offers a specific type of outdoor recreational experience. While it's crucial for potential visitors to be fully aware of and consider the significant negative feedback from past campers, the campground might still be suitable for a very particular demographic.
The primary appeal of any campground is its ability to provide a natural setting for a getaway. Big Sandy Campground, located in rural Swanton, offers a place to park an RV or pitch a tent, allowing for a break from urban environments. For those who prioritize a very informal, perhaps even rustic, camping trip and are prepared for a "Land of the Lost" type of atmosphere, as one reviewer put it, this could be an option.
However, based on multiple customer reviews, it is imperative for prospective campers to manage their expectations regarding amenities, maintenance, and interactions with management. The repeated mentions of "disgusting" bathrooms, a "horrible" swimming pond, a "falling apart" playground, and issues with long grass and potholes suggest that the campground's facilities are not well-maintained. Furthermore, the strong warnings about it not being "dog or kid friendly" due to aggressive enforcement of rules and threats toward pets are serious concerns that must be weighed heavily by families and pet owners.
Therefore, Big Sandy Campground might only be suitable for very specific local campers: those who are seeking an extremely no-frills, potentially "drunk for the weekend" type of experience as described by a reviewer, who do not intend to use the recreational facilities (pond, playground, bathrooms), and who do not plan to bring children or dogs. For such individuals, the campground offers a location to park and potentially enjoy a basic outdoor setting without the expectations of a more traditional, family-friendly, or well-maintained facility. Prospective visitors are strongly advised to contact the campground directly for the most current information and to understand all rules and conditions thoroughly before booking.

Jul 29, 2024 · TamA RaahhThis place deserves 0 stars to be honest. This place is a joke. I went on Friday and paid for 4 nights and he asked me if I had any dogs. I told him no and he said “Good, because if they bark, you’re out of here.” There was a guy paying in front of me, he asked him the same question and didn’t even say anything about the dog that was staying with them. The swimming pond was horrible, playground is falling apart, bathrooms are really disgusting.. the one stall had a SMALL shower curtain for the door and the other stalls don’t even have locks on them anymore. The grass was super long in most spots and the pot holes are bad.Fast forward to Monday evening and the old man comes out of nowhere with no warning on his gator and goes off on my aunt and uncle about their dogs. Yes the dogs bark, but usually at cars that would go by slow or other dogs/people they didn’t know. (they were in a fenced area or in the camper) He started cussing and screaming, threatening to shoot their dogs. Goes on about how my uncle is foul mouthed, yet my uncle didn’t even say anything, it was all the old man. My kids were right there and so were my little cousins. This place is definitely not dog or kid friendly.WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IF YOU HAVE KIDS OR DOGS!!
Jul 31, 2024 · chrislyn wacaseyIf I could give a zero I would. The old guy that runs this place is drunk half the time and belligerent. We paid for 7 nights and on day 3 he comes up cussing about my dogs that were barking at him because he was being a threat. Then he threatened to shoot my dogs. He said we had to leave and I said if he gives me my money back. He cheated me out of 50 bucks. This campground is unkept grass is not cut, water for swimming is dirty with leaches. No other campers came the whole time we were there and now I know why.
Jul 30, 2024 · Paula LewinskiThe owners are horrible and rude. NOT kid friendly. NOT animal friends. Owner threatened to shoot my parents dogs (they were in a fenced in area or in the camper the whole time.) They do not mow their grass areas, swimming area is atrocious, playground is falling apart, concrete is coming up in spots and a trip hazard and their bathrooms are disgusting. In women's room doors have no locks and 1 is just a shower curtain that does NOT cover the stall when in use. Id NEVER recommend any friends, family or strangers to go here.
Jul 30, 2024 · Jessica LewinskiThe place deserves a 0 rating, 1 star is very generous. The owner is obviously an achoholic and is very rude. We paid for 7 nights and ended up leaving after 3 when the owner pulled up to my site cursing (in front of 4 small children) and could smell the achohol with every word out of his mouth. He says he didn't realize my group was so big with so many kids and we cost him business even though only 2 campers came all weekend and both stayed so there was no loss of business and if anything with all the visitors I had come it made him money. Then he started about my dogs who of course is barking at him as he pulled up right next to their pen saying he would shoot them cause it's no place for dogs (even though I called ahead and asked about dogs and told him I had 3 dobermans which are well behaved unless you pose as a threat as he did pulling up cursing at me for no reason, even payed for each one of them to be there and he was the one that checked me in)The campground itself is so neglected, the grass was very long, the playground was horrible with one of the thing for kids to play on was a cement drain that was falling apart, very unsafe imo. The store (if you want to call it that) had 1 shelf of stuff to purchase with nothing useful really for camping, they sell no bait even though they advertise a fishing pond and if you want ice he will only sell you 1 bag at a time "because he has to drive and go buy it himself" is what he told me.The swimming pond is not taken care of at all....the roped off section is pretty mucky except for a strip in the center of area....while letting the grandkids swim I met a guy who was there with his granddaughter who claims he use to run the place a few years back and took care of everything but since he quit they let the place go and even warned me about an area of the roped off section to swim in being infested with a bunch of leaches. Also advertises that he has 200 camp sites although this might be true, I would say there's only about 20 sites because the rest are ppl that live there year around and seasonal, it almost looks like a trailer park more than a campground if you go deeper in the grounds.I highly recommend staying away from sandy beach campground, not family, kids or pet friendly....might have to have a alcoholic anonymous card to be accepted
