Bean Lake Campground

Augusta, MT 59410, USA

2.0
This is a dry camping spot. There is no potable water available, the bathrooms were locked, and the spots were not very well designated. I was the only person staying here during a two day period in the area. I found a parking spot and slept well. As a note, there is no signage, so make sure to check on the map to ensure you are in the right spot.If you are visiting someone at Montana Wilderness School of the Bible, or climbing a nearby mountain, this would work well due to the proximity to the school and Dearborn trailhead. The lake is present, and there is water in it as of April, 2023. - Joseph Anderson (Joey)

Bean Lake Campground Introduce

For those Montanans seeking a truly off-the-beaten-path camping experience, Bean Lake Campground near Augusta offers a unique blend of natural beauty and rugged simplicity. Unlike highly developed recreation areas, Bean Lake embodies the spirit of primitive camping, appealing to adventurers who prefer solitude and direct connection with the wilderness. Managed by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) as a fishing access site, it provides a tranquil setting on the edge of the Rocky Mountain Front. This is the place where you can truly unwind, breathe in the crisp Montana air, and immerse yourself in the serene landscape without the distractions of modern amenities. While it requires a self-sufficient approach, the rewards are ample: stunning views, abundant peace, and a genuine taste of Montana’s untamed beauty.

Bean Lake Campground is situated in the picturesque region of Augusta, MT 59410, USA, making it an accessible, albeit somewhat remote, destination for locals across Montana. Specifically, it's located along the Rocky Mountain Front, offering breathtaking scenery. To reach Bean Lake, travelers typically head south from Augusta on the Stearns-Augusta road and then follow signs to Bean Lake. It's important to note that access may involve some dirt roads, and while the location is ideal for escaping the crowds, visitors should check a detailed map to ensure they are on the correct path, as signage might be minimal. The proximity to the Montana Wilderness School of the Bible and the Dearborn trailhead makes it particularly convenient for those visiting the school or planning to embark on hiking or climbing adventures in the nearby mountains. At an elevation of approximately 4,500 feet, the site offers a distinct high-country experience, surrounded by 17 acres of natural beauty. The serene journey to Bean Lake sets the tone for a peaceful retreat, far from the hustle of city life.

Bean Lake Campground provides a basic, no-frills camping experience, focusing on essential provisions for a rugged outdoor stay. It's designed for campers who are self-reliant and appreciate simplicity.

  • Designated Campsites: The site offers approximately 8 designated campsites. While reviews suggest these spots may not always be clearly marked, there are typically relatively flat areas suitable for setting up camp.

  • Picnic Tables: Each campsite is generally equipped with a picnic table, providing a convenient surface for meals and outdoor activities.

  • Toilets: Vault or pit toilets are available on-site. It's important to note that based on recent visitor reviews, these facilities may occasionally be locked, particularly during off-peak seasons. Campers should be prepared for potential limited access to restrooms.

  • Boat Launch: A boat launch is available for visitors looking to access Bean Lake for boating or fishing. This is a key amenity for anglers and those who enjoy water activities.

  • Access for Camp Trailers: The campground is designed to accommodate camp trailers, with sufficient space for parking and maneuvering, although specific hookups are not available.

  • 14-Day Stay Limit: Like many public recreation sites, Bean Lake Campground has a 14-day stay limit, ensuring equitable access for all visitors.

  • Pet-Friendly: Pets are allowed at the campground, making it a great option for those who wish to bring their canine companions along for their outdoor adventures.

Bean Lake Campground's appeal lies in its unpolished, natural features and the sense of seclusion it offers. These highlights cater to campers looking for an authentic Montana wilderness experience.

  • Stunning Scenery: The campground boasts beautiful scenery, with the majestic Rocky Mountain Front as a backdrop. The views of the lake and surrounding landscape are a significant draw for visitors.

  • Bean Lake Access: The presence of Bean Lake itself is a major highlight. The lake, often replenished with water, offers opportunities for fishing, especially for rainbow trout which are stocked annually by Montana FWP. Boating (non-motorized or electric motor boats are ideal) and simply enjoying the lakeside tranquility are popular activities.

  • Privacy and Solitude: With sites that are "well spread apart" and often low visitor traffic, Bean Lake Campground provides ample privacy and a quiet atmosphere. This is highly valued by those seeking to escape crowds and enjoy peaceful contemplation.

  • Proximity to Outdoor Recreation: The campground's location near the Dearborn trailhead makes it an excellent base camp for hikers, climbers, and equestrians looking to explore the vast opportunities within the Rocky Mountain Front and potentially the Scapegoat Wilderness area.

  • Dry Camping Experience: For experienced dry campers and boondockers, the lack of hookups is a feature, not a drawback. It allows for a more self-reliant and authentic outdoor adventure, often at no cost or a very low fee.

  • Wildlife Viewing Opportunities: The secluded nature of the area means there's a higher chance of observing local wildlife in their natural habitat, adding to the wilderness experience.

  • Unplugged Environment: While some areas of Montana have cell service, many remote locations, including potentially Bean Lake, offer a chance to truly unplug and disconnect from digital distractions, fostering a deeper connection with nature.
