What makes its location particularly appealing for locals is its position within Southeastern Kansas, an area known for its rich history, including its ties to the famous Route 66. Being on the eastern edge of Baxter Springs, the campground is convenient for exploring the small town’s charm and its historical landmarks, such as the Baxter Springs Heritage Center & Museum and the last remaining Marsh Arch Bridge on Route 66.
Accessibility to the campground is straightforward, especially for those familiar with the area. While it's a minimal campground, signs leading to the location are typically clear. Visitors note that it's easy to pull into an open spot upon arrival, as the system is designed for simplicity. For travelers coming from larger Kansas cities, Baxter Springs offers a manageable drive, making it a feasible weekend getaway or an ideal overnight stop on a longer road trip through the state. The flat terrain within the campground and the level asphalt and gravel sites make it easy for RVs of various sizes to maneuver and set up.
The campground's direct riverfront access is a significant draw, allowing campers to step out of their RV or tent and immediately enjoy the serene environment. This close proximity to nature, combined with its easy-to-find location, ensures that even first-time visitors can navigate their way to a peaceful Kansas camping experience without complication. Its situation within the "Ozark Plateau" region of Kansas also means campers are surrounded by the distinct natural beauty of rolling hills and lush greenery, particularly vibrant during the fall.
Baxter Springs Campground offers a straightforward yet highly valuable set of services, focusing on the core necessities that make for a comfortable and affordable camping experience. The emphasis here is on providing essential hookups and a convenient system, rather than extensive recreational facilities, which aligns with its "minimal campground" ethos.
- Full Hookups: The campground provides full hookup sites, which typically include water, electricity, and sewer connections. This is a significant convenience for RV campers, allowing for a self-contained and comfortable stay.
- Water and Electric Sites: For those who may not need a sewer connection or prefer a more basic setup, water and electric sites are available. This flexibility caters to a wider range of campers and recreational vehicles.
- Level Sites: All sites are described as level, featuring a mix of asphalt and gravel surfaces. This makes parking and setting up RVs, even those up to 30 feet or shorter classes, much easier and more stable.
- On-site Dumpster: A dumpster is available on site for trash disposal, ensuring the campground remains clean and tidy for all visitors.
- Dump Station: In addition to individual sewer hookups, a central dump station is also provided, offering a convenient option for emptying holding tanks.
- Police Fee Collection: A unique and convenient service is the late afternoon visit by a local police officer who collects fees for single or multi-night stays. This streamlined process eliminates the need for a traditional check-in office and adds to the secure atmosphere.
- Porta-Potty Access: While there are no traditional restrooms with flush toilets or showers, a port-a-potty is available on site for basic restroom needs.
Baxter Springs Campground, while minimal in its offerings, features several highlights that make it a compelling choice for campers seeking a no-frills, authentic experience in Southeast Kansas.
- Riverside Location: A major highlight is its direct location right on the Spring River. This provides campers with a breezy, picturesque setting, perfect for relaxation, fishing, and enjoying the natural sounds of the water. The serene atmosphere is consistently praised by visitors.
- Affordable Rates: The pricing structure is exceptionally budget-friendly, with full hookups available for $20 and water and electric sites for just $15. These rates are hard to beat, making it an attractive option for extended stays or for those traveling on a budget.
- Peaceful and Quiet Atmosphere: Reviews frequently emphasize the quiet and peaceful nature of the campground. With fewer campers often present, it offers a tranquil escape, ideal for unwinding and enjoying solitude or quality time with travel companions.
- Beautiful Scenery: The surrounding area, particularly the southeast of Kansas, is noted for its picturesque landscape, featuring beautiful fall colors and green fields, even into the harvest season. This natural beauty enhances the camping experience.
- Accommodates Various Setups: While ideal for trailers 30 feet or less, the campground can accommodate most shorter classes of RVs and tents, providing flexibility for different types of campers.
- Convenient Payment System: The system of having a local police officer collect fees in the late afternoon is a unique and efficient highlight, simplifying the check-in process and adding a layer of local charm and security.
- Proximity to Route 66: Being located along Kansas' Historic Route 66 Byway offers a unique cultural and historical highlight. Campers can explore original structures of "The Mother Road," including the only remaining Marsh Arch Bridge on Route 66, and visit nostalgic spots like Nelson's Old Riverton Store.

Apr 18, 2025 · Keith ConleyAh it's nice and breezy on the river at Baxter Springs Campground tonight. I got here about an hour ago and it is lovely. The south east of Kansas is picturesque.Beautiful fall colors but still a lot of green in the fields to wait to harvest. It’s a minimal campground but has sites to accommodate most 30’ or less trailers, tents and maybe most shorter classes. You can’t beat the $15 water and electric or $20 EWnS hookups. Just a port-a potty is available.A local police officer comes by in the late afternoon to collect the fees for your single or multi night stay.
Nov 15, 2024 · Phil SattlerWe enjoyed this park. The city is making improvements and has added sewer to some sites. We helped them clean the park. Lots of trash. People just don't care. We suggested more trash barrels and a PVC tube for throwing away fishing line and hooks. We picked up a lot of fishing line by the spillway. They had no trash barrels by the spillway. They added firepits but installed some too close to trees. They don't take reservations. First come/first serve. However, I would advise calling the city to check for any group reservations. An Airstream camping group came in while we were there. We went to the city to pay for our site, and they told us they had a group reservation for the Airstream group. We talked to Public Works and the Mayor, as we didn't have another site lined up, and they were going to make us move. They did let us stay when they determined the Airstream group didn't need all sites. They are working on getting an online reservation system. The park has a popular disc golf course. Nice campground, and we will go back.
Oct 28, 2024 · Wayne HollisFun day in the sun awesome park quint intimate We had the campground to ourselves and saw more city employees than day guests. Police department is supposed to patrol and collect 10 Dollars hook up fee for water and electricity. Water is on all sites as of February 28 2023 I saw reviews saying water was off. 5 dollars for non hook-up and I have a pickup tent which is allowed according to city employees even though a sign say campsites are for electric hookup only RVs 71 degrees and low of 46 overnight with 5 mph light breeze couldn't ask for more for southern Kansas in February !!!!!o
