Bates Canyon Campground

Forest Rte 11N01, New Cuyama, CA 93254, USA

2.0
Bates Canyon campground is a very remote and beautiful campground. There are 6 tables & 2 buildings for pit toilets. The real charm of Bates is the serene and dramatic setting as It's nestled in the steep mountains & situated next to a babbling creek that can be enjoyed from your picnic table. Topping the area out eere all the beautiful majestic old growth oak trees. Site #2 has the best kid climbing tree. While my brother and I stayed and enjoyed Bates Canyon campground for several days it rained and we saw how well thought out the area was devloped as all of the tent sites drained well. It's a very old forest service facility and could use some reinvestment on the tables and pit buildings but this charming camp ground easily gets a 4 star. Check out the animal tracks after a rain and have fun identifying your track treasures. I've shared a pic of a large track my brother found just next to the camp ground. Remember your adventure pass & be prepared to unwind. - Douglas Bearmar

Introduction / Overview

Bates Canyon Campground is renowned for its remote and beautiful setting, offering a distinct experience compared to more developed or urban-proximate campsites. The campground is notable for its proximity to a babbling creek, creating a soothing natural soundtrack for campers, and is shaded by majestic old-growth oak trees, some of which are perfect for adventurous kids to climb. Its history as an older forest service facility means it boasts a well-thought-out design, particularly in how its tent sites manage drainage, a testament to its enduring functionality even after rainfall. While it may show its age in some areas, its intrinsic charm and dramatic setting contribute to its strong appeal for those seeking a tranquil and authentic outdoor adventure. However, it's also important to note that, as a more rustic site, visitors should be prepared for basic amenities and varying levels of maintenance.

This campground caters to those who prioritize natural beauty and quiet over extensive facilities. Bates Canyon Campground is located at Forest Rte 11N01, New Cuyama, CA 93254, USA. This address places it deep within the Los Padres National Forest, a vast and diverse wilderness area spanning across much of California's central coast ranges. The drive to the campground is part of the adventure, as it leads visitors away from major highways and into increasingly secluded terrain.

Due to its remote location, accessing Bates Canyon requires navigating forest routes that may not always be paved or in pristine condition. While specific road conditions can vary with weather and maintenance, generally, a vehicle suitable for unpaved or somewhat rough roads is advisable. The journey itself offers glimpses of the stunning landscapes characteristic of the Los Padres National Forest, from rolling hills to dense oak woodlands. It is essential for visitors to carry detailed maps or use reliable GPS, as cell service can be spotty or non-existent in such remote areas. Planning your route in advance and allowing ample travel time is highly recommended to ensure a smooth and enjoyable arrival at this secluded destination. The remoteness contributes significantly to the campground's serene atmosphere, making the journey part of the overall experience.

  • Picnic Tables: There are six picnic tables available across the campsites, offering dedicated spaces for outdoor dining and meal preparation.
