Bass Lake dispersed campsite

Ff Rd 2792, Manistique, MI 49854, USA

4.0
Small dispersed site. Not much room for more than 2 tents. Great tree coverage, keeps the camp in shade most of the day. Location is great, right on the edge of Bass lake with a adequate kayak launch. Beautiful morning sunrises and late sunsets. If you like to use a hammock there is at least one great spot on site. No picnic table is a con for me, but there isn’t really any room for one. The fire ring is in ground without a grate. No toilet here that we saw, wasn’t a big deal if you like dispersed camping. This was a great spot for kayak fishing because there is a lot of lake to explore and there is a creek across the lake from the site that connects to a smaller lake (Three Island Lake) where we caught pike and Bass all day everyday. The road leading into the camp is in good shape with a turnaround that will be very tight for anyone with a trailer or RV. 35-40 minutes from Munising - Chris Jellel

Dispersed camping, by its very nature, means fewer amenities and a greater emphasis on self-sufficiency. At Bass Lake Dispersed Campsite, you'll find a bare-bones setup – typically just a fire ring and a beautiful natural setting. This is precisely what appeals to adventurers who prefer to pack in and pack out everything they need, leaving no trace behind. While some campers might miss conveniences like picnic tables or grates for cooking over the fire, the trade-off is an unparalleled sense of privacy and the raw beauty of Michigan's wilderness.

The true magic of Bass Lake Dispersed Campsite lies in its direct access to Bass Lake, making it a fantastic spot for paddle sports. Kayakers and canoeists will find the entry into the water "perfect," allowing for easy launching and endless exploration. Despite some challenges with occasional visitors on the access road, as noted by a previous camper, the overwhelming sentiment emphasizes the site's beauty and its suitability for those who truly embrace the dispersed camping ethos. It's a place where the sounds of nature, rather than other campers, define your experience.

The Bass Lake Dispersed Campsite is located on Ff Rd 2792, Manistique, MI 49854, USA. This places it within the vast and beautiful Hiawatha National Forest, a region renowned for its pristine lakes, dense forests, and abundant wildlife. While the exact driving time can vary, it is approximately 35-40 minutes from Munising, a popular hub for exploring the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. This proximity allows for day trips to more famous attractions while still offering a secluded base camp.

The road leading into the campsite is generally described as being "in good shape," which is a significant advantage for dispersed sites that can often have rougher access. However, campers should be aware that the turnaround at the campsite itself is "very tight for anyone with a trailer or RV," making this site generally better suited for tents or smaller vehicles. This detail is crucial for planning your visit and ensuring a smooth arrival.

Despite its remote feel, the site's location offers excellent accessibility to the natural features that define the area. Being right "on the edge of Bass lake" provides direct water access for kayaks and canoes, a key highlight for many visitors. The ability to explore not only Bass Lake but also connect to other nearby bodies of water, like Three Island Lake via a creek, further enhances its appeal for water-based activities. For Michigan locals, particularly those with a passion for paddle sports and a preference for secluded, rustic camping, Bass Lake Dispersed Campsite is an outstanding choice. Its primary appeal lies in its intimate connection to Bass Lake and the expansive opportunities it offers for "kayak fishing." The ability to explore not just Bass Lake but also navigate a channel to "Three Island Lake" for excellent pike and bass fishing adds significant value for anglers. The described trek to Three Island Lake, while "intense" and potentially involving "many spiders," is precisely the kind of adventure that appeals to dedicated outdoor enthusiasts looking for an authentic Upper Peninsula experience.

While the site lacks a picnic table and a grate for the fire ring, and there's no visible toilet, these are expected elements of true dispersed camping and are not significant drawbacks for experienced campers. The ample downed wood for fires and the beautiful tree coverage that provides shade throughout the day enhance the natural comfort of the site. However, it is crucial for potential visitors to be aware of the "downside" mentioned by a past camper: the occasional presence of uninvited drivers on the access road. While irritating, this is sometimes a reality of dispersed sites that are not fully gated or monitored, and campers should be prepared to manage such situations by prioritizing their privacy and securing their camp.

Despite this minor inconvenience, the overall positive feedback about the "very nice" campsite and the "very pretty" lake underscores its suitability. For Michigan residents who value solitude, a direct connection to nature, and exceptional opportunities for kayaking and fishing in a beautiful forested setting, Bass Lake Dispersed Campsite represents a unique and rewarding camping destination. It's a perfect spot to unplug, enjoy the Upper Peninsula's wild side, and create lasting memories on the water and under the stars.
