The drive to Big Pine itself is incredibly scenic, passing through vast valleys and alongside towering peaks, setting the stage for your nature-filled getaway.
Accessibility to Baker Creek Campground is notably straightforward, which is a significant advantage for campers of all experience levels. Its location "on the corner from a gas station and a fantastic BBQ spot" in Big Pine highlights its convenient proximity to essential services and local eateries before you even reach the campground entrance. This means campers can easily top up on fuel and grab a quick meal, or stock up on last-minute supplies, making the journey seamless.
Once you turn onto Baker Creek Road, the campground is easily reached. While one reviewer mentioned trying to find a spot "that wouldn't be passed by many cars" due to dust/sandy conditions, this indicates that the roads within the campground are navigable by standard vehicles. The fact that the reviewer successfully found such a spot suggests that the layout allows for varying levels of seclusion, even if some areas are more exposed to traffic than others. There is no mention of challenging off-road conditions or difficult terrain to reach the campground, making it accessible for campers towing trailers or driving RVs, as well as those in passenger cars.
Furthermore, its strategic location is also a major plus for those looking to explore the wider region. It's "Only 20 min from Bishop" – a larger Eastern Sierra hub with more amenities and services – and "about an hour away from all the lakes you can hike along." This superb accessibility to both local conveniences and vast wilderness areas truly makes Baker Creek Campground a prime base camp for a diverse range of Californian adventures.
Baker Creek Campground, while offering a rustic experience, provides key services and amenities that enhance comfort and convenience for its visitors, ensuring a pleasant stay in the natural environment. These facilities are designed to support a traditional camping experience while maintaining the campground's serene character.
- Creek-Side Campsites: A standout feature is that "pretty much all" campsites are located "right on the creek." This provides a constant soothing sound of "the babble of the creek," which greatly enhances the peaceful ambiance. The creek also offers easy access to water for non-potable uses like putting out campfires (when permitted) or for pets to splash around in.
- Picnic Tables: Each campsite is equipped with "picnic tables," offering a dedicated and sturdy surface for preparing and enjoying meals, playing games, or simply relaxing. This essential amenity means campers don't need to bring their own tables, simplifying their packing.
- Fire Rings: Every campsite also includes "fire rings," providing a safe and designated area for campfires. This allows campers to enjoy the classic camping experience of gathering around a fire, cooking over an open flame, and staying warm, provided local fire restrictions allow. It's crucial for campers to check current fire regulations before lighting any fires.
- Clean Outhouses: A highly praised amenity is the cleanliness of the outhouses. One reviewer specifically noted, "The bathrooms were SO CLEAN!" while another mentioned seeing "a couple of other ones on our drive to the site." The availability of well-maintained and clean outhouses significantly improves the comfort level of a rustic camping experience.
- No Potable Water (with clarification): It is explicitly stated that "No water is available at this campground - unless you want to count Baker Creek." This means campers must "bring your own potable water for cooking and cleaning." While the creek offers non-potable water, being prepared with your own drinking water is crucial for a safe and comfortable stay. This is a common practice for many wilderness campgrounds.
These services collectively contribute to a well-equipped yet naturally integrated camping experience, allowing visitors to enjoy the beauty of the Eastern Sierra with essential comforts.
Baker Creek Campground truly shines with several distinctive features and highlights that make it a "hidden gem" and a highly desirable destination for Californians seeking an authentic outdoor experience in the Eastern Sierra.

The constant "babble of the creek" creates an incredibly peaceful and natural soundtrack, fostering a deep sense of relaxation and connection to nature. The Eastern Sierra is known for its dark skies, and Baker Creek's location provides an unobstructed view of the Milky Way and countless constellations, making it a dream destination for amateur astronomers and anyone who appreciates the night sky.
- Secluded and Quiet Atmosphere: Even with multiple campsites, the campground maintains a remarkably quiet and private feel. This level of solitude is a rare find in many California campgrounds and is perfect for those genuinely seeking to escape crowds and enjoy personal space.
- Dog-Friendly Environment: The mention of "the dogs loved splashing around in it!" regarding Baker Creek suggests that the campground is welcoming to pets, particularly dogs. Access to the creek provides a natural playground for furry companions, making it an ideal spot for dog owners looking for an adventure with their pets.
- Proximity to Natural Beauty and Recreation: Beyond the campground itself, its location is a major highlight. Being "about an hour away from all the lakes you can hike along" provides access to a vast network of trails and stunning alpine lakes, offering endless opportunities for hiking, fishing, and exploration in the Eastern Sierra.
- Convenient Local Amenities: The unique advantage of being "on the corner from a gas station and a fantastic BBQ spot" in Big Pine adds a layer of convenience often not found at more remote campgrounds. This allows campers to easily access fuel, last-minute supplies, or enjoy a local meal without a significant detour.

Baker Creek Campground Reviews
We loved our campsite number 10 right on the creek. But I think they're pretty much all right on the creek. Our stretch of the campground had sites 8-12 and we were the only one in this stretch, and it was awesome. As others have noted, the campground is very dusty/sandy, so I had been trying to get a spot that wouldn't be passed by many cars, and number 10 was great. There was an outhouse nearby, and I had seen a couple of other ones on our drive to the site. No water is available at this campground - unless you want to count Baker Creek, which had a lot more water in it than I thought it would (the dogs loved splashing around in it!). The campsites had picnic tables and fire ringsThe campground was quiet, except for the babble of the creek, and I felt safe there. The stars were incredible.
Oct 07, 2024 · Leslie SmithWhat a hidden gem. It’s on the corner from a gas station and a fantastic BBQ spot. Only 20 min from Bishop and about an hour away from all the lakes you can hike along. The bathrooms were SO CLEAN! There is a creak for easy access to water so you can save the area from fires. But bring your own potable water for cooking and cleaning.Excellent views of the stars! Reservation was a breeze and very well-maintained.
Oct 19, 2023 · M LStayed one night in mid-April. Slept in our minivan. The weather was pleasant - not too hot or cold. Found a site close to the restrooms.Pros: 15-20 mins out of town, the creeks are pretty and provide white noise so you don't really hear other campers across the way, plenty of trails, fairly quiet, bathrooms are clean. There are trash and recycling bins as well. Our fur baby enjoyed exploring around our little spot.Cons: Not all tent sites are level, roads are dusty and rutted. Tent sites are close together so in the high season I can imagine it getting pretty cozy with your neighbours. Our table at tent site #24 was pretty sloped. We parked some larger rocks underneath the low end to level it out.The creek was running pretty high so it was fairly loud. If the sound of running water triggers you to get up in the middle of the night to pee, you might find a spot where it is not running so fast 😉It was also a little buggy, spent ten minutes chasing down a kamakazi mosquito before we could fall asleep! We drove around in the morning and found areas (almost lots) where RVs were parked. All in all, a reasonably pleasant stay for this first time camper.
Apr 13, 2024 · Isabelle MurphySuch a beautiful place 🤩 quiet and peaceful ❤️ i always vist here when i am in town ❤️ its even beautiful in the winter time ❤️
Mar 03, 2025 · MistyWow! I rolled up here at sunset on a Saturday night in the summer and was amazed to find a whole jumble of spots to choose from. Sure it was 102° but still, everywhere in CA is right now. I appreciated the natural sound machine that was already set to "bustling creek" with the occasional song bird in the background. Everything was wonderful and there is a really nice playground down the road for those who want to play around. I loved this campground and it was the FIRST place out of two months of camping that I felt safe enough from bears to sleep in my open sky tent instead of my car.
