Customer reviews for Axtel Campground offer a mixed but informative perspective, reflecting both its longtime appeal and some current challenges. One camper loved their site, noting its proximity to the water and its suitability for children to play. They praised the excellent opportunities for fishing, swimming, and kayaking right from their site. However, this same review mentioned issues with the facilities, specifically noting that two of the three women's showers were broken, with one having standing water and the other being taped off. This highlights a need for maintenance and repair.
Another long-time visitor, who has been coming to the campground all their life and is now bringing their grandchildren, shared a particularly heartfelt review. They expressed sadness over the recent decline in the campground's condition. They mentioned that the trees, which were a victim of disease, were recently replaced, which is a positive step for future shade, especially for tent campers. However, they pointed out significant issues with the shower houses, including mold and non-working showers. They also noted that the campsites were overgrown with weeds and poison ivy, and they felt that the facility was not being sprayed for bugs. The low lake level and limited access to the beach were also points of concern. This review, while expressing heartbreak over the state of a beloved place, underscores the fact that while the natural setting is still cherished, the human-made facilities are in need of attention. It provides a valuable, candid look into the current state of the campground and suggests that prospective campers should be prepared for a rustic experience with some potential inconveniences. On the other hand, it also shows the deep loyalty that Axtel Campground has fostered over the years, a testament to its fundamental charm and natural beauty.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I love site #79. No electricity or water. So close to the water so kids can play in it non stop. Not much shade. Great place to fish, swim, kayak right off your site. 2 of 3 women's showers broken - one had standing water, the other had caution tape.
September 23 · JB RI have been coming here all my life . I'm now bringing my grandchildren here. Up until this past year the facilities have been wonderful. The trees were destroyed by a disease but they did plant trees which is really nice especially in the back areas where people tent camp near the water. They really needed shade. It will be nice for my grandchildren in the future. This year 2024 the facility has really been run down. There are three shower houses. One house has trouble with the shower head and mold. The other shower house only one shower working. Bugs are everywhere all the time. I understand that people leave the doors open. There is very little ventilation so the shower house gets hot. The cleaning crew could do some high dusting, Wipe the walls and cleaning the corners of the stalls down. The third shower house I don't know much about because I haven't used it this year yet. I have two more trips planned this year. I will be using it then. The camp sites are overgrown with weeds and poison ivy. I don't believe they have been spraying for bugs either . We now have to check out one hour sooner than the years before. It's sad to write this review because in the past I have given Five Stars . I'm happy that I still enjoy the lake but the lake has been low most of the year. The beach is not open at North Fork. The beach at Axtell is limited. It is so sad 😭. It breaks my heart ❤️ the only good thing that I really enjoy with my family and want my grandkids to experience is falling apart.
August 10 · Cherish ComstockWe love camping here! There is a beach that the kids love swimming at right by the front sites. It’s beautiful to watch the sun set over the water and lots of paved roads in the campground to go bike riding. We go every summer!
August 15 · Terri KrauthWe have been camping at Axtel for years and we have been pleased with the facility until the last time we were there which was Memorial weekend! The restroom did not have soap in the dispenser the entire time we were there, most of the stalls ran out of toilet paper and I never saw anyone come and clean the restroom at all! The campsites need more gravel on them, that weekend it rained a lot and our campsite was muddy! In the past Axtel has always been our favorite campground at Rough River but if things don't improve, we will have to look elsewhere!
June 22 · Deborah VincentIt was a very nice place. With the severe storms that came through, the water level was up extremely and they gave proper notification of closed lots so people had time to move sites. The campground was clean and lots were in good shape upon check-in.
